You know why they can win and raise their profiles at UB more often then any other MAC school?? Because we are a P5 program stuck in the MAC. Simple as that.

Correction: We're a P5 SCHOOL stuck in the MAC.  We're very much a MAC program though in terms of funding and facilities.

For all of you who hate the track around the football field, here is an example of someone stepping up to do something about removing a track.

    https://goracers.com/news/2021/1/19/football-racers-announces-six-figure-gift-for-clear-the-track-campaign.aspx

So if you do not want the track around the field, do something.  If not stop complaining.

Wait, you don't actually think this Murray State fundraising campaign actually is about removing the athletic track from the stadium...do you?  Read articles, people, not just headlines.

The campaign is to raise $$ for the football program.  It's called clear the track because a football tradition for the Murray State RACERS is a RACE Horse running around the track after a TD.  The PA announcer literally shouts "clear the track, clear the track, for RACER one", and then the hourse and jockey run around the track.

LOL.  The campaign is called "Clear the Track" because it's a motto associated with the history of the program, not because they are actually trying to get rid of the track around their field LMAO.

On a more Serious UB note, any discussion of removing the track without a fair and realistic plan to build a new outdoor track and field facility for the Track and Field team is a non-starter, end of story.  You don't get to discontinue an entire athletic program (for both Men and Women) because you want better sight lines.

  3. Whoever it is, it will underwhelming as it is Alnutt making the choice.  What a wet blanket that guy is.  When you hire a young up and coming AD like that, you expect them to be ambitious and want to leave their mark on the school and improve their resume with program growth. That's what we got from Warde Manuel and Danny White and look what it did for them.  AD of MICHIGAN and UCF respectively.  But Alnut runs the department like a 70 year old washed up AD who's just happy to not rock the boat and stay out of the nursing home as long as possible.  What a massive disappointment he is.

  4. I've been vocal in the past that I was not a fan of Lance as a coach.  Great recruiter, but could just never get the job done in those big conference games even when he had the better team.   So I'm not sad to see him go, other than this time is crap and bad for the program.  It's late in the offseason for a coaching change standpoint.

It's also a blatant money grab by Lance as there is absolutely no reasonable way anyone who pays attention would ever think that moving from Buffalo, a program that finished the season nationally ranked to Kansas, a horrific program that hasn't made a bowl since 2008 is an upwards career trajectory.  No coach, let alone Lance is going to succeed at Kansas long term.  Kansas offered him a good amount more than UB, and he sprung for the $$.  I respect and support when a coach leaves for an opportunity that is an honest to goodness career advancement like Nate to Alabama or Bobby Hurley to ASU.  I have no respect for Lance and this move.  He's a nice guy personally, met him a number of times, and wish him the best on a personal level.  But professionally, I look forward to watching him flame out in 2-3 years and end up in CUSA or something.

Ok, sure.  Burn down the program, fire the entire coaching staff, fire the AD, and bench all of the starters because we lost to Syracuse.  Remember when they got beaten by Kentucky after a solid first half in 2014?  Should've fired Hurley.  Losses to Creighton, Xavier, Duke, Iowa State, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Bona (multiple times). Should've fired Oats.

What is the solution?  Fire Whitesell and coaching staff right now?

Whitesell should never have been the choice to take over for Oates in the first place.  I wouldn't make a change mid-season, and my opinion on Whitesell and Alnutt have NOTHING to do with this single game but rather with the stifling of momentum from the program and a utter lack of desire to build something more.  Half the board wanted to run Danny White out of town because of a damn name tweak, but at least he had vision and tried to build UB athletics into something more than a MAC also-ran.

I mean, I'm not patting them on the back, but I'm also not gonna act like the sky is falling or trash the coaching when they took Syracuse to overtime at the Dome.  As much as we all wish for the best for UB, we gotta understand that this isn't 2018 anymore and taking a solid ACC team to overtime isn't the end of the world.  Blowing leads against MAC opposition is one thing, blowing a lead on the road at Syracuse is another.  I understand the frustration, but I won't get bent out of shape over this one....I'm looking ahead to the upcoming games and hoping to see progress.

That's a Mark Alnutt level of ambition right there.  Content with being a solid MAC program.

  7. Whitesell will lead this program nowhere.  The sooner they show him the door, the better.  However I expect that Alnutt and his shocking lack of abition and vision will allow him to squander all the momentum the program gained through the Hurley and Oates years until the program falls back to the pack in the MAC.  Buffalo at their shot at being a Wichita St. or Butler, or insert mid major that parleyed success until getting bigger here, and they punted.

Completely agree. This was a bad loss no way around it. Tired of people on here with patting team on back. We were clearly the better team and lost. I don’t fully blame the team some of the foul calls were atrocious but we gotta games away. The program should be held to higher standard..

Yup.  This team won 4 of 5 conference championships and spent an entire season ranked in the top 25.  Anything short of seriously competing for the top spot in the conference just about every year is a disappointment and failure.  Period.  End of story.  The University at Buffalo is one of the largest and best public universities in the nation and is playing fucking horrifically bad safety schools like Akron and Eastern Michigan.  Alnutt had all the momentum in the world to try and push UB athletics to a new level and chose to go safe and boring with Whitesell.

While agree with @UBlearnsand @skrabukes I am tired of moral victories with this bunch. Too often we play lights out 30 minutes then fold and crumble and have bad body language looking to fight at the end of games. We are very capable of winning the MAC but until I see us close out games I’m convinced it will be like last season. This was a good test and everything you want in a non conference game. But we gotta close. Still haven’t learned to close. This bunch will be define by their inability to close.

Coaching is middling at best (why Alnutt thought old dog Whitesell would be different than he was every other time he's coached is a myster) and the team lacks leadership.  Everyone hoped Graves would be the heir apparent to Wes Clark and then CJ.  He isn't a leader.  That's ok, not everyone can or should be.  But they do not have the mature, strong leader that you need.  Lots of talent but little direction.  IMO good coaching can make up for a lack of strong leaders on the court, but they won't get that from Whitesell.

  10. Another signature Lance Leipold loss.  Losing to Army at home in 2018, a week where if they won they'd certainly have snuck into national rankings for the first time ever, was no fluke.  Collapsing in the 2nd half of the 2018 Championship was no fluke.  Yesterday was no fluke.  Lance left his magic in DIII and his teams fall on their faces at the first sign of adversity.  Was kind of hoping Illinois would hire him.

  11. Why the hell is there an argument about attendance at a one day showcase in Toronto?  It's not about how many Torontonians show up to watch.  It's a game against a good team that may be ranked.  And we're arguing about how many people will show up there?  Who gives a flying fuck?  Let the organizers at the HOF worry about marketing it. Next are we going to complain that if Kent State doesn't sell out their shitty little barn when UB comes to town that it's a great disrespect to the UB brand?  Get real.   And they call my generation entitled...

That’s gotta boost his draft stock somewhat right?

None of UB's players have any draft stock.  CJ is the closest, but still isn't really on the draft radar in general.  As best he and maybe Perk and/or Harris will be signed to play for an NBA team in the G League.  Most likely they all end up with good gigs overseas.

A month after St. John’s snuck into its first NCAA Tournament in four years, the program is once again an absolute mess. Their coach, an iconic and beloved figure at the school, is gone; they have struck out repeatedly in searching for his replacement. A bunch of players are leaving, and the program literally has no recruits coming in to replace them. The Red Storm are suddenly a disaster, and it’s starting to look like it could take years to clean it up.

Lanier was in the MAAC quite a while ago.  If you are worried about a”homer”, I am pretty sure that Hodgson lived in Olean for quite some time.  I think Hodgson or Lanier are good choices for you, but this thread is fun. Let’s keep it going.

Wolf Blitzer would pass the loyalty test, but it could be tough with the basketball knowledge.  Press briefings could be in the “situation room”

Hodgson went to JCC and is from Olean.  He's a WNY guy.

Hodgson is also in Tuscaloosa dangling a Hawkins commitment (to us or Alabama) in our AD's face so I'm not sure how good of a culture fit this is moving forward. We need a sustained, positive culture for this program.

Maybe I'm wrong but as much as I initially wanted continuity and to play "save the recruits" at all costs, it just doesn't feel right anymore.

Meh, that's the dirty world of the NCAA.  If you think whoever they do hire wasn't doing that stuff, I think you'd be mistaken.  I like the Hodgson hire not only because of the recruits but also he brings the local ties like Lanier has that everyone seems to love so much.  It's just not a sexy hire...but neither was Oats.

If Alnutt does not hire Hodgson we will be decimated, lose all our momentum, lose our season ticket base which is our family along with many other fans I have talked to. Hodgson is loved and respected in this community and deserves a chance based on what he has accomplished here along with the other coaches. He is the best recruiter we have had with times all over the country. All of the successful coaches once started out as assistants and we don’t need to handier head coaches that have been fired and did not succeed in their jobs. Rob Lanier has had a ties to this community for years along with the other potential candidates. No Reggie as looks and acts like he is in burnout mode and said when he was here that it is too hard to recruit to UB. Every day that goes by is another downward negative reaction by many fans.  Bryan Hodgson gives us the best chance to succeed and as a first time HC would be more inclined to stay here for several years and why we would want to hire any coach who fans are talking about leaving as soon as they had some success.  As each ay goes by all hope is further and further away

I largely agree with on Hodgson this except for the season ticket holder quip.  Listen, if you, or other STH are so damn fickle in your support that you would cancel your tickets because the coach you like wasn't hired...we can't count on your support anyway, so good riddance.

If he knew his worth (of course he did), in the sense of being able to have his choice of UCLA, Bama and other P5 schools, then I don't know how I blame the guy for leaving. Who turns either of those down?

Id honestly think he was an idiot not to take that level, heck Id have said UCLA would be a bigger spot regardless of where they sit now.

But how he went about it? Im not sure how you'd want your Coach to act if he knew he was leaving for one of these jobs already while he was still coaching here. Its what makes college football awkward, coaches leave before their teams last game if it happens to be a bowl.

I am from Buffalo.  I went to UB.  If I were were coach of UB and had Oats success and the choice to try and maybe build long term success at UB, knowing the institutions' issues and making 2 million + at Bama, UCLA, etc.  I would also have left UB.  Despite all my ties to the school.  Loyalty, stability, etc is absolutely worth something.  But the gulf between Bama and UCLA and UB in athletics so mind-bendingly massive that I wouldn't be able to ignore it.
