Who's going to Cleveland?

Recommended Posts

Cleveland Rocks!  Really looking forward to Southern Tier Brewing being our UB official site.  There are a number of other breweries in Cleveland as well.  Best milkshake I ever had was the Vanilla Bean, Bacon, Apple pie shake at B-Spot.  There's one in the Q, one in the Casino, and one on Chagrin Blvd, which is a good stop on the way home.  Great burgers there as well.  Owner is Michael Symon of Iron Chef fame.

Some CLE suggestions from a friend in Akron:

"First, some places near The Q, which would be pretty good places to visit:  The Winking Lizard, The Clevelander, City Tap, Harry Buffalo, Panini

A little further away from The Q, but definitely walking distance, is the area known as ‘E. 4th’.  It’s basically almost an ‘alley’ between Prospect and Euclid.  Butcher and the Brewer is good.  Also Michael Symon has two spots here: his long-time place, Lola Bistro, and his new Bar-B-Q place, Mabel’s.  Jonathan Sawyer is another renowned CLE chef and his Greenhouse Tavern is here.  More upscale is Red the Steakhouse. (I’ve never been, but I hear it’s good.)

Just west of The Q, right on the Cuyahoga River, is The Flats.  Collision Bend Brewing is relatively new, but it’s causing a lot of commotion in the brewing world here in northeast Ohio.  The menu also features the work of Chef Zack Bruell, who is also pretty renowned here.  Brick and Barrel is here, really good.  But also some ‘chain’ places. (avoid.)

An Uber away is Ohio City.  It’s basically across the River on Carnegie.  I think you should at least go to Great Lakes Brewing Company while you’re there.  The food is pretty good, and it’s CLE’s long-standing brewpub, in a cool, old building.  While you’re in Ohio City, go to the West Side Market, if you can.  It’s right across th street from GLBC. It’s been around for, like, a hundred years.  Also in this area is Crop Bistro…very good.  Market Garden Brewing is here, as well, right new to West Side Market.  Good food, great beer.  Heck’s Café is good.  Mamocho is good, if you like Latin American.  A little more upscale is Karen Small’s Flying Fig.  I haven’t been, but it gets tremendous reviews.

And for ice cream, you can’t beat Mitchell’s.  You must try it.

A bit further north, but still in Ohio City, is an area called Hingetown.  Saucy Brewworks is here.  The food is pretty good.  There’s also a Rising Star Coffee in this neighborhood.  Great selections, if you’re in to coffee.

On the east side in the University Circle area (Cleveland Clinic), you’ll also find some cool places.  (Before you get there, though, stop at Slyman’s on 31st and St. Clair, if you’re in to corned beef! And if you’re in to Vietnamese, I can vouch for both Number One Pho and Superior Pho, also in this area!) The world-renowned CLE Museum of Art is in the UC area, along with the Museum of Natural History.  You’ll also see Severance Hall, home the one and only CLE Orchestra.  For food, L’Albatros is good.  But take Mayfield Road east, off Euclid, and go to Little Italy!  Mama Santa’s, Valerio’s…and for dessert anything from Presti’s Bakery or Corbo’s. (there’s a Rising Star Coffee in the area, too.)"

Promo, if you look out the gift shop door from GLB, across a parking lot or 2, there's another brewery over there.  Which one is that?  Do they specialize in German or Belgian maybe?

There are 4 breweries within 2 blocks of Great Lakes: Market Garden, Bad Tom Smith, Nano Brew and Hansa.

Others nearby include Brick & Barrel, Book House, Saucy, Forest City and Platform.
