The AAC still has a presence in the region with Temple in Philadelphia." Sounds like they want to be a southern/Midwest conference. Also, interesting that the ESPN contract didn't consider UConn one of the protected schools that was key to the TV deal. So UConn leaving was considered to be the same as Tulsa or ECU leaving--not a concern for ESPN. "The $1 billion deal has a clause that would allow ESPN to renegotiate if a member leaves, according to the Sports Business Journal. A source said the clause is specifically tied to five schools (Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Memphis and South Florida), which UConn was not included." It sounds like they aren't going to expand. And why should they? All of the teams are now going to get an extra $700k a year since they get to split up the money that was going to go to UConn. trueblue32
ESPN had stipulations in the contract for if one of the marquee teams leaves so I don't think the schools will be seeing anymore money (maybe less). However adding us or any of the other rumored teams probably doesn't really change that.

UConn was not one of the marquee teams designated in the ESPN contract.
trueblue32
"The ESPN contract also includes language that would protect the network, should marquee schools, such as UCF, Cincinnati or UConn leave for another conference." https://www.apnews.com/d01c9d9805f6460bab475f8d93c32ef6 Not sure which is true but i guess it would make sense since the contract is mainly for football from what it seems and UConn didn't contribute much there. I got the impression that your article speculated on who the marquee schools were while the Houston article explicitly lists the schools. The Houston article would have done their due diligence since this is a key story for The University of Houston and their fans.
MillenniumBull
So Memphis is a football school now? That was quick.
rma
Are we a northeast school though? Sure NYS is "northeast" but Buffalo is closer geographically and culturally to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, even Columbus than Boston, Philly, and NYC.

Buffalo is considered northeast, even if it’s really more Midwest or Great Lakes. The statement was pretty clear they are looking more towards their core geography.
