All-Decade Team

Thought that it would be a fun discussion to make an all-decade team for UB basketball. Might be a bit of recency bias in my team but it's hard not to considering the success we've had as of late.

C Nick Perkins

F Javon McCrea

F Jeremy Harris

G CJ Massinburg

G Wes Clark

Backups:

C Mitchell Watt

F Justin Moss

F Blake Hamilton

G Shannon Evans

G Dontay Caruthers

Reserves:

F Willie Conner

G Davonta Jordan

I’d throw Torian Graham in there somewhere, Bobby Frasco too

I know there is a recency bias, but your list (and my thoughts about it) really underscore for me how much better UB was this year than the rest of the MAC (and better than the best MAC teams in a long while). The quality and depth were incredible.   While we won't be as good as last year, we can be good enough to get a top-4 seed in Cleveland and get back to the NCAA tournament.

Javon McCrea was a heck of a player.  Is his number retired?

Only one change I would make on the first team and that would be Moss or Watt for Harris. Harris was not MAC player of the year caliber like both Moss and Watt. Great off the bench and instant offense type player in this scenario.

Because Moss was a beast and I think would have been an all time great if he didn't have sticky fingers... and because you gotta bring Perk in off the bench, I think I'd go

C Watt
F Moss
F McCrea
G CJ Massinburg
G Wes Clark

6th Perkins
7th Hamilton
8th Harris
9th Caruthers

Coach - Nate Oats

Agree with this list, although I really want to sneak Evans in there somewhere. If he had played 4 years I think he'd be a no brainer first teamer.

I can't put Moss on the team but can't put anyone on to replace him.

Based on cumulative winshares starting with the 2010-11 season

C Perkins - 11 winshares (4 seasons)
F McCrea - 19 winshares (4 seasons)
F Regan - 8.3 winshares (3 seasons)
G Harris - 9.5 winshares (2 seasons)
G Massinburg - 19 winshares (4 seasons)

Which is the OP's list with Regan inserted for Clark... Clark had a 3.5 winshare in his one season with the Bulls, which makes sense, as he missed a lot of that season and because Oats' style meant a lot of guys contributed to each win... 3.5 winshare is tied for 18th best single season in the decade. CJ has the top two single seasons with 7.1 in 18-19, and 5.9 in 17-18. McCrea has the next two highest single season winshares with 5.6 and 5.3, tied for 6th best is Harris and Moss with 5, and at 4th best, Darkhorse candidate for inclusion because his senior seasons was 2010-11....Byron Mulkey with a 5.1 winshare that season...

2nd team would be

C Watt - 7.5 winshares (2 seasons)
F Hamilton - 6.8 winshares (2 seasons)
F Caruthers - 7.3 winshares (3 seasons)
G Filzen - 6.7 winshares (2 seasons)
G Evans - 6.2 winshares (2 seasons)

3rd team would be

Skeete 6.1 (4 seasons)
Moss 5.9 (2 seasons)
Watson 5.7 (3 seasons)
Connor 5.5 (2 seasons)
Bearden 5.4 (2 seasons)

Here is my suggested top 10.

Player Years PPG RPG APG
Javon McCrea 4             15.7               7.7               1.9
Nick Perkins 4             12.8               6.1               0.6
C.J. Massinburg 4             15.3               5.9               2.4
Jeremy Harris 2             14.8               6.0               2.6
Blake Hamilton 2             15.2               6.6               3.4

Wes Clark 1             15.5               3.5               5.4
Mitchell Watt * 2             12.0               6.3               1.9
Zach Filzen * 2             13.6               2.8               1.2
Willie Conner 2             12.4               2.5               1.1
Will Regan 3             9.2               4.7               0.8

Note that I only show stats for this decade, and that is why Watt and Filzen only have two years.  Shannon Evans and Lamonte Bearden would have made my list, but did not due to the transfer.

Any list should focus heavily on the team’s success. While Javon was a beast and great player he never got his team to the dance and in fact he was a huge reason why we lost in 2014 in the quarters to Eastern. Thus Harris, CJ, Perk merit best of the best status.
