The words overrated/underrated are pointless. I prefer desciring him for what he is rather than labeling him against other peoples comparisons.

I think Licata is very good and one of our best QBs Ive seen us have. Even better than Willy because of his arm. Im in the camp that agrees play calling hinders him. His ability is beyond some of the vanilla nature of the calls I see. Hes a good leader and has ability to move the ball at will. He certainly isnt perfect. The occasional WR stare down happens but doesnt bother me when I know hes capable of scoring enough points to win MAC games. If we had a lick of defense this team would be pretty decent.

Better than Willy? That is a pretty big statement. I don't see Licata having the success that Willy is enjoying in the CFL after he graduates.

I don't know if his ability is beyond these vanilla play calls. He is a QB who should make his mark with his accuracy, considering his lack of a tight spiral and velocity. At times he can be outstanding, but far too often I have seen him over-throw the hell out of the ball. If the offense got any more "less-vanilla" I don't know how he would handle it.

To your point on the defense, you are right. The defense is our biggest issue but the inconsistency from Licata this year has not helped us either.

I agree with your original post BFIC.  In fact, I believe I said almost identical things to an unnamed BullRun reporter sitting in front of me at the game yesterday.  Joe has clearly regressed.  Easy guy to cover........just watch his first look; wait five seconds, and after the ref has thrown the holding flag, go block his first look receiver.

I have watched the last 9 years of QB's............Joe's performance yesterday was likely one of the poorest.  He over threw; under three, and just generally was not crisp or decisive.

I am one of the biggest Pollyanna's on the Board, but tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving, and Joe delivered the turkey early.

Good post, sums up my thoughts well. If licata wasnt a local kid he would be looked at by the fan base very differently.

There are plenty of issues outside of Licata, but the guy is incredibly overrated by our fanbase just because he's from Buffalo. He is terribly inaccurate at times, he has stared down his receivers since day 1, and he holds the ball for a solid half hour before committing to a pass. Our O-line deserves a ton of credit for the amount of time they give him.

All of what you write are true (holds the ball, inaccurate at times, staring down receivers).  He has the mobility of an old Dan Marino as well.  But...relative to what I've seen over the years in the MAC and at UB, he is a good QB.  You can win with Licata.  He is our QB for the next year and a half.

Is he really that over-rated?  Who is writing/saying that he is?  He's competent...and that's a step up from what we've had in many other seasons I can remember.

The reason I started this was because the only time I ever saw his name mentioned, for the most part, was when talking about records and being our all time best. All the blame is going to the defense, quinn and kicking which they most definitely need to be called out but it was time for joe too. Like I said, he's not our biggest issue but he's not exactly lighting the world on fire.

Ok, first off let me start off by saying this may anger some people on the board, I am aware. But people, please stop acting like Joe Licata is this elite QB that can do no wrong. I get that he is a local kid, I get that he is a HS record breaker and puts up decent stats and he can look good at times. As we all should know, stats do NOT tell the whole story!

Based off the eye test, he has not improved from last year and I think it could be argued that he has digressed from last season. I have seen more overthrows and poor decisions than I remember all of last year. He looks almost uncomfortable in the pocket, and he doesn't throw a tight spiral. He is locking in on receivers too much, not going through his reads like he did last year. I am not here to bash the kid, but I think people need to wake up and stop looking at Joe like he is the savior of this team. He is our QB who looks good at times, and poor at other times similar to many other QB's we've had. Some of the blame for today's game should 100% be on Joe. I don't get why he keeps getting a free pass. He is NOT the only problem with this team, but he is one of them.

The "not having a Bo at RB" excuse is invalid because Taylor is putting up the same numbers.
You want to argue that he doesn't have a Neutz this year, maybe I can give that to you but our receivers have looked more than capable so far this year. This should be the year that Joe makes the receivers, not the other way around, and I don't see it from him.

In my opinion there is a major concern with our PK. Kicking is very much a mental thing, and when you start shanking kicks, especially ones that could potentially win games, it gets to you. I hope Clarke can bounce back, but untill he makes a few i'm not trusting him with the game on the line.

I also had a few different people come up to me at work and say "how about that Branden Oliver?". He was the talk of the town for the millions of people who play fantasy football.

As someone who does not believe in fantasy sports. There was nothing more frustrating seeing Naaman Roosevelt get his first NFL touchdown against the Giants (conflicted rooting interests are horrible).  With that caveat the only reason to take Oliver this week would be because the Chargers are playing the Raiders.  Even then, if Donald Brown was not injured last week would you have picked him up this week to use against the Raiders?

For all you fantasy players who have jumped on bandwagon's similar to Oliver's in the past, how have those picks played out over time for you?

As an avid fantasy player, that's wrong. The reason why Oliver is a hot pick-up this week is not only because they're playing the Raiders, it's because he really has no competition in the backfield this week. He is guaranteed touches, both on the ground and through the air. If Brown was not injured, Oliver still would have been a viable pickup but not a must-have like he is this week.

Similar pick-ups to Oliver are for the most part hit-or-miss, hitting more often than missing I would say. I can think of a couple examples this year. Number one being Matt Asiata filling for Adrian Peterson. He has been huge one week, and average the next. Another would be Kniles Davis who filled in for Jamalal Charles for a couple weeks and was an absolute stud.

Kicking the field goal there is the right call. That's a 33 yarder. It wasn't like it was a long kick.

I disagree in this situation. Best case scenario we get 3 points, it's still a one possession game and we are trusting our defense to stop them which is a huge task for that unit. Our running game has been our lone bright spot this year and we had a chance to end the game doing what we do best and what BG does worst. Clarke has looked shaky all year and the winds were blowing, that was not an easy kick. I'm putting the game, and maybe the Mac east, in Taylor's hands every time.

I've tried my best to be on Quinn's side of things, but today I just can't do it.

As others have mentioned, the choice to kick a FG in swirling winds and a struggling kicker is mind-boggling, especially considering our running game has been our biggest strength all season. You get two chances to get a yard against maybe the worst defense in college.  You get the first, you essentially win the game. Instead lets trust that not only our struggling kicker makes a tough FG, but also that our defense will be able to stop them with ~4 minutes left.... sigh.

BUFFALO, NY - The Mid-American Conference and ESPN announced on Wednesday afternoon that the University at Buffalo has been chosen as one of three institutions selected to begin the ESPN University Production Initiative at their respective universities.  Chosen along with Central Michigan and Northern Illinois, the ESPN University Production Initiative will allow for a minimum of 35 sporting events at each school to be picked up on one of the ESPN Networks through out the year.

“As we continue to build America’s next big time college athletics brand, this is a huge opportunity for us,” said Athletic Director Danny White.  “With the ESPN University Production Initiative, we will now have the ability to showcase our great University, our facilities, and most importantly our student-athletes to over 230,000 alumni worldwide.”

In year one, the Bulls will be producing 37 events beginning with the men’s basketball exhibition game on Nov. 6.  The schedule of events will include the entire home men’s and women’s basketball schedule as well as all five home wrestling dual meets.  The package will also include the final four home matches for volleyball.

This initiative will also allow for ESPN to broadcast basketball postgame press conferences.

All 37 events will air on ESPN3, but ESPN will have access to cut to any event on their main station, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews or during basketball season, the ESPN Buzzer Beater channel.
