1  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: Dave Letaio to DePaul per Andy Katz on: Yesterday at 02:35:42 PM
Happy for UB!

DePaul continues to drive their program further in the ground. The hired a search firm to bring back a guy from 10 years ago lol.. Needless to say DePaul fans (or what's left of them), are extremely disappointed with the hire.

The DePaul Blue Demons have interviewed Tulsa Golden Hurricane assistant coach Dave Leitao and are seriously considering hiring back the former head coach, multiple sources told ESPN.

Many believe this is a smoke screen. I don't know how seriously they are considering him, but it would not make DePaul fans happy.

After I type this, Andy Katz reporting it's all but a done deal for Leitao.

Happy for UB, I hope Hurley stays

FWIW, latest i'm hearing on the DePaul side of things is that Bryce Drew is the front runner, and will be on campus today for an interview.

Good morning

Hidings are all about who is the hot at the moment. Decisions are based upon prior experience/success, personality and more. Hurley is hot--maybe more about the name then his resume as a coach. He has been a head coach for two years. While I am thrilled lets be honest--he was the beneficiary of a good group--first year McCrea and second year many returning players. He has done a great job of recruiting both years.  This year we had a great end of the season. But what were thinking when we lost to Ball State, Ohio, etc. But what were we thinking when knew another explosion was to take place and an d ill timed technical would put us in the hole.

Again, I love that Hurley is our coach. I love his national name and personality.  Do we really think Tennessee now is targeting Hurley. What doe we really know about DePaul---again, DePaul needs a coach with Chicago connections.

go BULLS

DePaul doesnt need a coach with w/ Chicago connections they just need a coach who can recruit good players. It really doesn't matter where the kids come from. They have 7 kids from Chicago on the roster right now, it's not working out that well...

As far as Hurley goes, with more and more jobs opening up at this point I just hope he makes a decision soon. Even as a DePaul fan part of me wants to just see him stay at UB and do some serious damage next year in the MAC. Squad would be nastyyy

Can one of you Depaul people please answer this for me:

Depaul's last coach, Oliver Purnell, was hired for $1.8MM per year with a resume that included 20+ seasons as a head coach in D1 and complete turnarounds at 4 separate schools. Why is it that you all think Depaul is going to now offer Bobby Hurley at least $2MM per year with a resume that only includes 2 years as a head coach?

DePaul is an extremely desperate program who needs youth and energy instilled in it. The last 3 coaches at DePaul have been old, and all of there better days have been behind them. Wainright and Purnell especially came here, got their retirement package at age 60+ and can now do whatever they please. The drive and passion has not been there from the coaching position, and this is really the last chance (DePaul fans hope) that the administration has at making a BBall coaching hire. They need someone young, someone to relate to players, someone who wants to improve and get better. With how awful the program has been they have to overpay to acquire someone like that or it's not worth the risk for the coach.

Hurley obviously fits what they are looking for, and if they really want him they will have to pay up. The job is very risky for any coach right now, but the upside is there if the job is done right.

Good morning

I am reading these posts as well as those under DePaul.  I live in Chicago. DePaul is in a big conference and a great city. DePaul basketball is not a major presence in Chicago.  They pay currently 12 miles a way from campus. They are building a new arena that will be 7 miles away on the south side.  It has been years since DePaul was able to recruit the best of  Chicago area players. I would be shocked if they offer the job to Hurley after only two years at UB and with no Chicago connections. I will be equally shocked if Hurley does not take the job if offered. It will not be for $2 million but at a minimum twice the UB upgrade to $5-600,000.

Best case we keep Hurley for one more year. If we perform as expected next year, Hurley will be a real hot commodity. How will that impact our recruitment and what does that mean for our next coach.

go BULLS

DePaul was paying Purnell over 2 mil a year. If they really want Bobby, they will offer him something close to that. If the money isn't a big upgrade I would guess Hurley will stay at UB

Ugh...Got this off of the St Johns board:

@prepbullseye: As I previously indicated, I've been told if Bobby Hurley is offered the DePaul job he will take it. Interviews Saturday.

It appears that Roy Schmidt is the one saying Hurley is Depaul's top target, and Hurley really wants the Depaul job. I wonder if any of it is true or if he's just trying to bring them together on his own.

For the record, Roy Schmidt is a very... polarizing figure surrounding Chicago basketball, particularly at the high school level. He is a HS scout and likes to constantly bash the larger media outlets like ESPN, Fox, CBS, etc. He is very knowledgeable but I would take what he says regarding this coaching search with a grain of salt.

I have 0% of a problem with a guy looking to improve his job and for Hurley to set up interview(s) while they are negotiating.  That's part of life and leverage.

But, if you "agree in principle" to a deal, but still go on the interviews...I am spurned.   Why agree in principle and still go on the interview?

I hope he reconsiders and doesn't go on the interview(s) if he has already "agreed in principle".

I thought we gave him an extension weeks ago. Perhaps they just now "agreed" on the terms of that extension? Is Bobby now going to use the extension as leverage on Depaul? Methinks Depaul won't like that much.

I don't know how much leverage it is really going to gain for Bobby. DePaul has been prepared to offer at bare minimum 2mil a year the entire time.

How do things stand with that new arena at DePaul?

Ground is breaking this spring, and is scheduled to be complete and ready to go in mid-2017.

I'm probably the only person who is a diehard UB football fan, and a diehard DePaul (alumni) basketball fan. If Hurley leaves UB, I hope it is to DePaul and if it's not than I hope he stays with UB for the foreseeable future.

If I commit to a job and leave a month later without accomplishing anything, I'm an a$$hole. Just sayin'...

Also, I wonder how the D-linemen feel that signed commitment letters to this team YESTERDAY...

I feel the same way... DLine was our deepest position that we recruited and now all of these kids will be playing directly under a new coach. Wouldn't be surprised to see a transfer or two at the end of the year

Do you think may be that some of the players were coming to UB for an education and not just to play for an assistant?  Also at least one of the lineman s a transfer from a JUCO which means that they would have to sit a year before they play their last season.  Not sure how many programs would want a player with only one season of eligibility left.

Some of the players might feel that way, which is why I said we might see a transfer or two, not that they were all going to transfer.

And as far as programs taking players with 1 year of eligibility left, it happens.. Does Chazz Anderson ring a bell?

Anderson could play immediately.  These players would have to sit a year unless they dropped to FCS or lower.

Point still stands... one year of eligibility left
