1  UB Sports / Other Sports / Re: Northtown Center getting Glass / Boards / Rink / Booth improvements on: Today at 05:13:14 AM
Some added attraction to starting a varsity program and joining the AHA. Once UConn leaves they want 1 or more members, and other changes:

http://www.uscho.com/atlantic-hockey-blog/2013/05/18/thoughts-on-rhode-island-and-st-anselm-as-possible-aha-members/

Upping their scholarship limit to 14 makes things a little more competitive to the full-scholarship leagues without breaking the bank for the 'poorer' schools. Moving to 28 games seems a temporary fix (4 teams for 4 games and 6 teams for 2 games) until expansion. Last season with 12 teams, 'western' teams like CC played the other 5 'western' teams 3 times and the 6 'eastern' teams twice. If UB were to join with URI and St Anselm for a 14 team league we could have a 28 game league schedule of:

UB
Air Force  (3 games)
Canisius (3 games)
Niagara  (3 games)
Mercyhurst  (3 games)
RIT      (3 games)
Robert Morris (3 games)

2 Games against 5 of the 'eastern' 7 teams
American International
Army
Bentley
Holy Cross
Rhode Island
Sacred Heart
St Alselm

Even with 1 or 2 games per season traveling to Air Force, overall our scholarships and travel wouldn't break us nearly as much as joining the WCHA would. We could maintain with a budget <$1M for the men's program as many in the AHA have, and possibly split to create two 7 team leagues with even less travel.
2  UB Sports / Basketball Recruiting / Re: New recruits and a transfer possibility on: May 17, 2013, 04:15:01 PM
Since the deadline for coaches to make visits has passed, and Wednesday was the 'official' last day of the late signing period, it appears the staff has moved on to 2014 offers with 1 ride open. Unless we have another potential transfer or recruited walk-on in the plans.

Awesome ending, we've won every MAC series this season. Magic number down to 1!
4  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: Hurley Names Staff on: May 16, 2013, 05:30:47 PM
So Harrield is a high school assistant and AAU head coach? I never really wondered about the resumes of assistant coaches at this level but that's not too exciting.

Though not just any HS, a BB factory under a legendary coach. And you gotta like the talent of the D-1 bigs he's helped produce.

According to CBSsports's article on the hire only Libscomb is left with a D-1 HC opening. So it's assistant or wait for him.

Looks like Reggie isn't looking to just sit and collect his buyout. His name is out there for some positions apparently. UMass-Lowell had him as a finalist for their HC job as they move into the America East, along with former BC coach Al Skinner and a Northeastern assistant. They picked the assistant, a prudent move since he's younger and is a Boston guy with 3 years with the Huskies and 13 years before that as a BC assistant under Skinner.

I would hope you have something to do with that condition.

Very very likely, unless Shemar Moore of Criminal Minds or Adam Levine of Maroon 5 move in next door, or take up being our mail carrier.

Manhattan's AD announced the game this afternoon. Not much talk yet on the Jaspers' board.
8  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: Scheduling Conflict on: May 14, 2013, 09:01:27 PM
More than likely 3pm since that was the schedule last season. Overall, the field is much better than last year's games. The Hall and an NEC team as the headliner, vs Stamford and the 2012-'13 runner-up? We'll also have to see the Hurley factor for drawing fan interest in full effect in NYC.

3:00 Tulane/Hofstra
5:30 South Carolina/Manhattan
8:00 Seton Hall/LIU Brooklyn
vs
Buffalo/Manhattan
Temple/LIU Brooklyn
Michigan/Stamford

My vote was Boise of course, but my wife wouldn't have any of it due to cost (big purchases planned this fall and wifey may be knocked up at that time....women...). She's said she'd be ok with a Brooklyn trip. So unless we are in Detroit or a full-in for the DC or St Pete bowls I'll likely be there.

St Peter's was a case of UB fans having to trek to their Jersey City campus by means other than nearby rail transit stops. Attendance was listed as 867, so based on the decent UB turnout of that total, imagine how many more could show for a real arena experience with far more transit options?

No one is saying we quite have the talent to contend for the MACC, expect to beat a Toledo team returning a strong offense on the road, or expect to beat a BGSU team that returns nearly everyone. It's a matter of we should have enough talent to improve from 3-3 at home in 2012 to 4-2, or even 5-1, and improve from 1 road win to 2 wins on the road.
11  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Top 6 questions of the 2013 UB football season answered on: May 12, 2013, 10:34:24 PM
Theres no doubt that this team will have the talent to win 6-8 games this year. We need the coaching staff to to hold up their end, and for everyone to stay healthy.

What do you base that statement on?  We have a couple of decent players but hardly a guaranteed winning roster.  But we have a roster that is close to even with other MAC teams, so I do agree coaching makes all the difference.

Based on the answers to question #4 in the post. The offensive issues in part due to the loses of BO and Lee are illustrated with CBS's 2014 rankings of our all-MAC returnees, which form a solid core of skill and Sr leadership we haven't seen since 2009:

Mack #8 OLB (#1 in the MAC)
BO #12 RB (#1 in the MAC)
Neutz #27 WR (#1 in the MAC w/ Nick Harwell booted from Miami)
Najja #59 CB (#3 in the MAC)
Lee #61 WR (#5 in the MAC)
12  UB Sports / Football Recruiting / Re: Qadree Ollison - RB from Canisius attracting attention... on: May 12, 2013, 09:49:05 PM
Not only will Qadree be a focus this upcoming season but his squad will be loaded again, and maybe even stronger than last season when they finished T-#1 in the state in AA. Brad Zaffram, an all-state player as a Soph from our powerfull neighbor Sweet Home is tranferring there.

There's going to be an even bigger recruit than Qadree coming into town. Since Tyrone Wheatley was hired by the Bills he's moving his family here from the Syracuse area. His son is one of the top players in the country going into his Jr year: http://247sports.com/Player/Tyrone-Wheatley-Jr-26879

The are many rumors where he'll end up. Some saying Canisius and others, Williamsville North.
13  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Akron Transfer on: May 11, 2013, 02:21:02 PM
Meh, far from a top transfer when you can't win a starting spot off a 1 win season when you lose to Sac State. Chazz at least had other FBS offers, while Hirshmann's only other was Harvard. Bright kid but even some Zip fans aren't betting on him winning the starting spot. Then again, their current QB's couldn't beat out an FCS backup transfer to start last season.
14  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Pre-Camp Two Deep Depth Chart on: May 09, 2013, 09:22:25 AM
... D backfield is beyond solid and moving Redden to OLB makes sense ...

Not only Redden, but wasn't his OLB backup also originally in the D backfield?

Yep though he only got in on special teams. After Baugh graduated, putting mobile big hitters seems ideal across from Mack, who kills in dropping back in pass coverage himself. No less than moving up from #2 in the MAC to #1 MAC pass defense this season would be a disappointment.
