1  General News and Announcements / General Discussion / Re: UB Athletic Financing on: December 18, 2015, 01:20:06 PM
Bucky's blog post is more of the same. His statements that 'some' dislike NYBI, 'some' see an FBS split, 'some' want hockey and lax. He cites football costs, yet, compare to the hundreds of millions Rutgers has spent to play in the red for the B10. Ignoring that while this is a pro town our bowl games had huge ratings, and our NCAA appearance exceeded every championship game rating locally. That's why we think beyond Buffalo...not because it's foolish but, our alums give us this town in local ratings.

Downgrade FB...0 FBS teams have downgraded since the early 80s. Our Olympic sports aren't making it in the A10 or MVC, the only leagues nearest to us for multiple bids

And let's look at all schools with FCS fooball, hockey, and men's lax teams:  most of the Ivies, Colgate, Sacred Heart, Holy Cross...yeah right, we have so much in common institutionally with those schools.

Another good article from Mark Gaughan with insights into our weaknesses and what's coming back. He doesn't include Rohach as he has not signed. Even with that, he's high on the young QB's, while dead on that our biggest needs are LT, MLB, team speed on offense, and a pass rush without the need to blitz so often. We can see the staff working on that with the commit from Hodge, 3 athletes from FL, and a focus on recruiting defense.
3  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: 2016 QB...a transfer? on: December 07, 2015, 11:06:35 PM
So it won't really be any different if Rohach or Michael win the spot. Each would be 1 year guys unless Merchant beats them both out

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Iowa State quarterback Grant Rohach tweeted he's transferring to Buffalo on Monday night.

The red shirt Junior, who will graduate from ISU later this month, will have one year of eligibility remaining and can play immediately for Lance Leipold and the Bulls.

Jackson's ceiling....think of a right-handed Maynard without the chip on his shoulder. In fall practice he was already ahead of Michael for 4th in thr depth chart. But once he redshirted Michael was 4th.

Yet Jackson only turned 18 this past November, a younger frosh just as McCrea was in basketball. That's why I don't see any problem giving him another year to come along slowly.

If Michael were not 4th string in 2015 I'd be unsure giving a ride to a grad transfer. But he's yet to seriously challenge for PT, even with his size. I had hopes for him with his arm but he needs a big jump in many ways or Merchant/Jackson will be even younger options...also with 0 total yards of career offensive production. Vs a grad transfer with over 1,500 offensive yards for his career.

Some say in the NFL, until you have a franchise QB, you should draft a QB each year til you find one. And in college, Srs won't have a 'next year', so play the best players you have to win right now. The 2016 Bulls have a lot coming back so find the best QB for 2016. If Rohach enrolls and wins it, only Michael loses out. Jackson will only be a R-Fr, can develop and learn and possible get a few snaps next year, then 2017 try to win the job as many suspect he is our future QB.

Look between Duquesne and Baruch.

Would bet anything that the names we heard last go-round in Greg Paulus and Jeff Boals  (assistants at tOSU) and the always-connected-to-Big 4-jobs Kevin Kuwik (now at Dayton) will surface through the local media. Nick Mendola mentioned Jamion Christian (32 y.o. HC of Mt St Marys) on twitter, young but worked under Smart at VCU.

I wonder if someone like NJIT's coach Engles, (to reach a higher profile) or Tim O'Shea now at Bryant (get back in the MAC) might apply. But my guess would be White shoots for a guy like Heath or unconventional once again, like offering the job to a non-coach like Wally World.

News spreading fast so no doubt about. Now just hold on to commits as best we can, flaunt the extra $ for the run at some other 'big' name, which I gave no doubt White will go for.

Alan Pergament posted the game rating in his blog today. Simply amazing, Average of 11.1 for a Friday afternoon game on TNT, with a high of 16.4 in the last minutes. Not as high an average for the UB I-Bowl but beats all but a few Final Four ratings from the past. And higher than any SU, Bona, NU tournament game.

If anyone has not seen this yet,  a tweet from Darren Rovell during the start of the game. None other than the guru of sports media branding complimenting our move. Of course many replies from those who just don't quite get it: their commenting shows how well the brand is doing its job.

"Buffalo's decision to put the "New York" brand out front is a smart one"

Listened at work and the drive to the Peace Bridge..had to park at the casino lot in the last 5 minutes. So proud. Living here in WNY the last week to see all the local support was amazing. Not quite as huge as FB 2008, when even WGR had periods where UB football talk trumped the Bills dreadful season. But close..and we should have even more attention on us next season. I can't wait to see the local ratings this one, a tight game at the end.

I'll be at work but I'm too excited to sleep. Gathering all my UB things to cover my cubicle with UB blue and white pride.

BN's Alan Pergament's media blog post with many tidbits on the weekend. The local rating for the champ game of 4.4 was great for ESPN2. Very cool that Ian Eagle and Our Man Gottlieb will call the game.
