1  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Bull Run 2014 Spring Game Thread on: April 19, 2014, 11:44:12 PM
I missed another spring game due to travel for the holiday but could at least sneak away to watch it online. Checking out the spring game write-ups and highlights of UB vs UMass, the differences between the squads remains clear: mistakes. Checking out UMass's sieve OLine and QB play was painful. For us, as much as having back-up QB's and a steady wind slowed our offenses at times, there were very few mistakes or huge breakdowns. I thought the Spectrum graded the units fairly. I felt better after watching this game of attrition than past spring games early on with Quinn when there were some big offensive and defensive numbers that may have given false hope, but lots of youth, poor depth, and a slew of errors.
2  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Chad Kelly out at Clemson on: April 16, 2014, 10:07:18 PM
I really don't think UB was ever that high on his list when he was in high school.  I think that was just a courtesy to the local school.  IMO

He had us over some AQ programs based on Quinn, competing, and being close to family:

Chad Kelly certainly sounds like a spoiled brat and a full blown nut job, but I am not so quick to dump someone overboard. He's had a privileged background of any superior athlete in this culture and needs a whole lot of growing up. But he wouldn't be the first to be in that position. I remember Randy Moss with his problems at Notre Dame and then Florida (or Florida State?) before ending up in his home state Marshall University. He did OK with Marshall and had a nice (if bumpy) professional career.

I'd expect Kelly to get offers from much bigger football programs but if he somehow he ended up at UB, I'd like to think of all of the potential advantages. The bigger the risk the greater the opportunity for gain.

That's my sense as well. He could end up anywhere though he did have UB high on his list, and when he was at St Joe's I think being around more family members locally kept him straight. If it were a player in most any other position, you may not take a shot. But securing wins in the MAC is much easier when you have a top 5 QB. With Kelly you are getting the height and the skill set on the level of a LeFevour or Harnish. I'm also a little worried concerning Collin Michael's lack of quickness developing into the offense. He has strong tools and should get there, but I expected a bigger push from him for the #2 spot this spring.
4  UB Sports / Other Sports / Re: ECC Hockey will play at Harborcenter on: April 09, 2014, 02:45:57 PM
Though it is now official ECC at HC has been in the works since last year, so no surprise. Canisius and ECC at HC is a matter of convenience for both, and though a quality facility, 1800 is still no larger than Buff St or Northtowns. The proposed 5th rink at Northtowns would have expectations of being better than the current feature rink of 1800, "NCAA quality" as Barry Weinstien describes, with a larger capacity more befitting any UB varsity program.
5  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: First Spting Practice Interview w/ quinn on: March 29, 2014, 02:42:46 PM
Checking out practice today, upper 30's and moderate wind so it was a good stand-in for Nov. MAC games. They got in some light Off. vs Def. in the end. I didn't focus on defensive players as much as offense since they held off on full pass rushing. Though Lester was un-shockingly making plays. They didn't use a lot of 3-wr sets but when they did it was mostly Hughes, Ross, Willoughby. McGill looked good at the HB position that Campbell used to man. Taylor and Campbell got some carries and Jordan Johnson was 3rd. They didn't do a lot of rushing play practice sets so I'm still curious on RB depth beyond those three.

Cohane's case dismissed once more, though he'll push on, making his lawyers happy:

James Potts has been a complete disaster. We should've put all our eggs into the Fluellen basket that year.

Flu solidly committed to Toledo before Quinn was hired. Campbell came hard after him when Gill left. It would have been nice but Flu wasn't so attached to the school, more so his soft verbal to Gill and local players. I had a huge amount of respect for Flu when he tweeted grats to Licata on his first win as a starter.

McKissic's blog reports not only was Potts off the team, he is no longer enrolled. The only player besides Licata who is limited is Brock (knee).

We'll be legit someday, but we're still learning to win as a program. Only recently have we dumped the 2-3 body bag games each season. Then, win when you can OOC and roll the dice on who the MAC schedules for us, and build up from there. This year with CMU, Ohio, Akron being likely potential winning MAC teams on our slate, maybe we collect a few.

Even Gill didn't really get a chance to rack up wins vs very good programs, like his 2-8 record vs the superior West teams:

Gill's wins vs .500 teams:
Ball State 2008 12-2
BGSU 2008 6-6
Ohio 2007 6-6
Kent St 2006 6-6

Quinn's wins vs .500 teams:
Ohio 2011 10-4
Ohio 2013  7-6

Social and local media have been bonkers the last few hours. Kelly's cancer surgery then, a second heartbreak.
12  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Basketball / Re: Reggie on: March 25, 2014, 01:48:20 PM
Reggie is connected to the Jim O'Brien/John Beilein coaching "tree" so he'll always have a shot. UMass-Lowell would have suited his Boston connections, as well as his experience jumping into a UB program under full rebuild mode. I've always thought that besides college, he could establish a new AAU system here. He was huge in the 90's AAU scene, and for years since he took on UB, locals have bemoaned the loss of local development. You've seen Regan, Weir, Sterling Taplin, and all those great Falls players end up playing in the Albany City Rocks system.

Paxson was listed with the Sr's last fall, so no surprise. Bean, damn :( MLB depth goes from awesome to questions. That answers how Pitzonka received a scholarship. Demos was a walk-on but is still in school so anything could happen.

No definite word on Potts but McKissic has a fresh BN story for spring. Nothing really new or shocking in it but for Potts he states it "could be an academic casualty, according to a source."
14  UB Sports / Buffalo Bulls Football / Re: Spring Game on: March 24, 2014, 10:44:26 PM
All practices are open to the media
They aren't open to the public? I kinda showed up just to watch for about 10 minutes during the summer at a few practices.  Oops.

They've always listed practices as closed, but myself and others would just stake out spots in the stadium anyway. Saturday scrimmages are the key ones to go to.

Here is the spring prospectus:

No Blake Bean!? Guess we can bank on William White cracking the 2 deep.
