When you hear sports commentators talk about College Football tradition you rarely hear anyone mention Buffalo. Despite having a relatively low profile Buffalo has a lengthy football history. Recent fans, among which I would probably qualify, usually don't know the full scope of UB's history. So in the run up to kickoff I will be doing a series of 14 post about the history of the program you'll be a Bull Run certified UB fan ;)

Section One: In the beginning

Cliff Notes 1894-1903:
UB President when the team was founded: Eben Carleton Sprague
Teams First Name: UB Bisons
UB's first Coach (1897) C.W. Dibble, Record 7-0
Teams Founding Members: T.C. Moore and A.B. Stein.
First Home Playing Field Field: A Baseball field on East Ferry
First Practice Field: Brown's Riding Academy, East North street
Record Against Current BCS Programs: 4-1-1 (1-1 against the Big 10, 4-0-1 Against the Big East)

Part II 1915-1930 (the UB Bisons)

Cliff notes:

    * Program re-instituted in 1915 after 12 years off
    * Program reinstated the same year UB Began Men's Basketball was founded
    * The second UB coach, Syracuse Alumni Art Powell, was UB's basketball coach from 1915-1943
    * Programs first devoted head coach was Frank M. Pleasant
    * First Opponent of the UB Bisons was Hobart College
    * UB's game against Hobart was the most lopsided win in school history (81-0)
    * UB's first on campus home field 'Rotary Field' opened in 1922
    * James Ailinger became the first UB player to turn pro, playing for the Buffalo All Americans
    * Coach Biffy Lee (1929-1930) was Knute Rockne's college roommate
    * UB beat current conference mate Toledo by a score of 2-0 in 1925.

I am loving this series.  I know our athletic history isn't too great, but that shouldn't be a reason for the UB athletic department to hide the fact that we do have a history.  Just look at the UB athletic department website.  Under history, they have a 3 or 4 paragraph piece about the history of the UB logo, and that's it. They don't even bother to put an illustration of the logos they're talking about. Some information is available in the respective sport's media guides, but if the sport is no longer being played (like hockey) there is nothing.  Maybe you can get them to put a link to Bull Run on the history web page.

Just try to find mention of football on Canisius web site.  They seem to deny it ever existed there.

The UB Athletics site might not have much thats easy to find but the UB media guides have been invaluable for me during this series..

Section Three: There was more than one great depression in the 1930's

Cliff Notes:

    * UB teams renamed the Bulls in 1931 to differentiate between UB and Buffalo professional teams
    * Bill Prichard who was an assistant to Biffy Lee was the first to coach "The Bulls" and lasted just one season
    * UB played, and was defeated by the Notre Dame "B" team in 1931
    * Cornell football alum Jim Wilson led UB for two years in the 30's, in his first two games against Ivy league teams UB lost by a combined 138-0.
    * Coach Bibber would join UB from CMU and leave to take over the Athletics department at UConn
    * In 1935, Under Coach Bibber Robert Rich, founder of Rich Foods (and owner of the AAA Bision's), would be one of the UB captains.

The darkest hours of UB, and theyve been struggling to rectify it ever since.  Who where the other Div. I programs to dump football because of some hippies?
