This is amazing news to have swimming be recongized as the only MAC school when there are some good teams in the MAC.

remember volleyball's incoming recruiting class was also ranked as one of the best in the nation. props to all the UB coaches that are working so hard to bring the best to UB!

The scope of what the current administration has done with *all sports* is amazing! UB is maybe jsut a few years away from Challenging Kent as the best athletics school in the conference (at least getting into the top 3)

That interesting that you bring up Kent as being the best overall in the MAC. I feel like Akron is tops the past couple of years. But I have never really compared the schools in the MAC across all sports.

I don't know what the trophy names are but there is one form men and one for Women and Kent has won it the past two years. Of course UB is a little challenged because the field more teams than anyone else and the standings normalized.

The only thing I think the AD's could do, at this point, which would be huge is to get Hockey on board.

I understand they don't have the money but getting Hockey ready to go should be a top 5 major goal for the next five years or so...

The Pepsi center is walking distance from Campus and has a capacity of 1,800... To give you an idea of how much that is Niaga averaged 1,200 at thir games and were ranked 45th out of 60.

Maybe its just my Bias but UB Hockey at the Amherst Ice Center has a greater potential to pull in people from the community than UB Basketball at alumni:

1) Families that are enthusiastic about Hockey already spend time at the Arena because HS and Junior hockey play there
2) WNY is way more into Hocky than it is into Basketball

So I think 1K+ per game is reasonable (especially if the dorm shuttles make a special stop there on game night.

I love hockey and do agree that it would be great to have D1 hockey at UB. however in these times of budget cuts i would much rather see us continue to improve across all of our sports (without having to cut any of them) and improve our facilities. With the gameplan of getting better in all sports (and of course football) we will have a better chance of moving to a better conference which i think should be our #1 goal

I don't disagree, like I said Hokey should be atop 5 goal, not the #1 thing...

I think UB Hockey would draw more people into coming to UB events from the local community, that could hten be leveraged.

Looks as if this thread is being hijacked by hockey; but as seen in this table, hockey is generally a big money loser.  Swimming isn't exactly a cash cow either.

So what do you think football makes money for 90% of schools? If you look at your image Basketball lost more than Hockey, baseball was in the same neighborhood. College Athletics do not make money its about serving the student body.

Kent State won both the MAC Trophies, the Reese (Men) and Jacoby (Women). UB men finished 6th, the women 10th. We've historically been at or near the bottom in both so we are improving (and it stinks for us that crew is not MAC sponsored).

There are only 7 Men's swimming programs with 3 being affiliates from the MVC. EMU has won 4 straight titles but this class may get us to the top.

I played hockey at UB just after the programed switched from D1 to D2.  We had some great talent on the team and very succesful.  The Sabres at the time donated the ice at Hockey Outlet to us and that saved a ton of money.  I would love to see the Town of Amherst donate the Ice (practice is during the day and Ice is plentiful) and for games they will make it up in concessions.  Also, if we ever have a covered sports complex, we can then trade time with Amherst for that!

The sport that I would like us see take to D1 and we could be contenders within three years is Men's Lax!

Maybe we should first focus on getting good at sports we currently have, before thinking of introducing new ones? Like Hillbilly said, we've historically been pretty poor overall in the MAC. If we had the money, I'd love to see Hockey introduced as a DIV 1 sport.

Right now though I'd rather we concentrate our limited resources on getting to a position where the men and women are wining at least 2-3 MAC championships each every year before thinking of introducing new sports.
