  1. While I agree with your sentiment wrt modern college hoops as a whole, UB under Whitesell has done a solid job protecting its roster against the threat of the portal. Skogman is the only real loss in three years. Mballa essentially graduated and was never coming back this year. The other loses have been disciplinary or mutual partings. We kept our entire 2021 freshman class intact after the four played little to no playing time. Plus the staff still gets credit from me for keeping the band together after Oats skipped town, despite that group never reaching it's full potential in the following years. And that's not to mention the roster additions from D1, D2, and JUCO transfers. The new transfer portal has been a net positive for UB from where I sit.

  2. Go piss off. Beating that dead horse isn’t going to change anything. You obviously have zero context of college basketball attendance from any of our peers. This team is fun to watch and beat a quality opponent. The crowd tonight was energetic and into the game. My son and I had a great time. There will for sure be ups and downs but I’m excited to see how this season progresses.

  3. Hey that was a lot of fun tonight! A good crowd, and a team that grew into the game as it went on. I really, REALLY liked how they stepped up down the stretch on both ends of the floor, the focus and the competitiveness. This group is going to be a work-in-progress most of this season, which means some bad turnovers and missed defensive assignments. What needs work: defense and rebounding. Colgate moved really well off the ball, especially off picks and screens, and the Bulls need to do better at boxing out. But they did so enough times at the end to take this one. The stats on this one were wacky - for a long time, UB had way more fouls, Colgate way more foul shots. UB way more steals, Colgate way more turnovers. UB had more shot attempts. All of these things added up to an even game. Guys are much more willing this year to fake someone out and take the jump shot. Powell - like last time, some really nice confident plays and finishes, and a couple lapses. But stepped up in the second half. Curtis Jones - he's got several things working for him, adding to last year. A good floater shot in the lane; getting better at rebounding; willing to take charges (that one he got when Colgate was on a 3 on 1 was awesome); and hitting some from outside. Adams - hit a couple from outside and was it him with a big block towards the end or was that Smith? Jo Smith - needs to get tougher and own that position underneath Jack - found out that he needs to work on his defense a little more, but had a nice drive and layup in the first half. Hardnett - great to have him back, he made a couple nice defensive plays and that basket underneath on a nice look from Foster at the end Foster - some nice drives but sometimes down the stretch it seemed like he was trying to do a little too much. Blocker, Kanye Jones - didn't feature much but they will in other games. I like that depth right now. Caesar - so fast! A cool weapon off the bench Colgate - a slick team that moved off the ball really well This was a great game to have at this stage, to see how they could compete and who could step up when the game was on the line. Against a smart team that has been in the NCAA's a few times recently. Bulls need to get better on defense but today was a good step forward.

  4. Colgate is a good disciplined team with offensive sets, etc. I am impressed with our guys so far this half. I hope they can pull this one off, would be a great confidence boost to start the season

  5. With all the transfers last season, I figured I'd see how they were doing after one (or two games): (Former) UB Men Josh Mballa (Ole Miss): 3 points in 13 minutes with 6 rebounds and a technical. Ty Perry (New Haven): No scheduled games until November 16th. Lucas Saleh (Belmont Abbey): No scheduled games until November 11th. Tra'Von Fagan (UMBC): 12 points in 25 minutes. 3 of 7 from the field with 6 rebounds. David Skogman (Davidson): 12 points in 21 minutes. 4 of 7 from the field. One of 3 from 3 point. (Former) UB Women Dyaisha Fair (Syracuse): 18 points in 36 minutes. 7 of 21 FG and 2 of 8 for 3PT. Georgia Woolley (Syracuse): 8 points in 17 minutes. Saniaa Wilson (Syracuse): 5 points in 10 minutes. Cheyenne McEvans (Syracuse): Did Not Play Dominique Camp (Akron): 2 points on 12 minutes. Adebola Adeyeye (Kentucky): 6 points in 20 minutes. 2 of 3 from the field. 9 rebounds. Loren Christie (USF): 5 points in 13 minutes. 1 of 1 from the field. Nia Jordan (Bethune-Cookman): 4 points in 17 minutes. 2 of 3 from the field. 2 rebounds. Casey Valenti Paea (Long Beach State): No scheduled games until November 10th. Kaelonn Wilson (Binghamton): 2 minutes. 1 Foul. No other stats. Interesting comment on the 'Cuse website about Wilson: Prior to Syracuse (Buffalo 2021-2022): Appeared in 14 games for the Bills … Averaged 3.6 points per game and 4.4 rebounds. What happened to Elea Gaba (not that I'll miss her)? Not on the roster this year nor do I find her transferring. Besides maybe Skogman, Fair and Adeyeye, I wouldn't say any of these transfers are doing so well. Fagan is also doing well. I know, it's still early. So sad these days that players transfer so much. Camp was showing promise here. Just look at Marissa Hamilton from a few years ago. A local article says: Marissa Hamilton always dreamed of playing Division I basketball and professionally overseas. Transfered to NAIA Southeastern and then never played. Sat out 2 years and then "transferred" to Merrimack College (where her former teammate Brittany Morrison is an assistant coach). Had 11 points in 32 minutes. Nice showing. Why does everybody feel the grass is always greener somewhere else. For the record, I've never been a Dyaisha Fair fan. She takes too many bad shots and seems to be a "me-first" player. Also never smiles.

  6. OK, where the hell was that the last 2 seasons? The defensive intensity was phenomenal. Quick hands all over the place with 12 steals on a team that moves the ball pretty well. The counter attacks were impressive too. It felt like a Buffalo basketball game from a few years ago. The only difference was our half court offense seemed a bit out of control and our shooting (despite a misleadingly high % from layups) was pretty mediocre with a bunch of missed runners. They'll get better as the season goes on but WOW I was beyond impressed with the first showing. It's only 1 game but if this keeps up I'll gladly say I was wrong about Whitesell. One more thing, if Yazid Powell continues to play like that he will be up for MAC POTY.

  7. There are plenty of good days, and plenty of good reasons, to be critical at UB but yesterday wasn't one of them. The crowds usually depend on what night it is, and how good the team is. With so much turnover, I imagine a lot of people weren't too motivated to buy tickets for this season. Admittedly, my enthusiasm was not too high before this. The lack of continuity in the roster, in the new NCAA where guys are pretty much free agents every year, I wondered if I could get behind a team like that. Would the players give a crap about the school and the team? I had a lot of fun last night. The players were really fired up afterwards and saluted the fans in the end zone for their support. It answered a lot of questions for me. After hitting a ceiling the past two seasons, this feels like a breath of fresh air, no expectations, let's see how they do. The students showed up last night, the band sounded great. UB is hardly the only school that wishes they could get more butts in seats, most are facing this problem. Akron had 2100 last night against a perennially good South Dakota State team. BG had 1300. Ohio had 2000. It was a Monday night. Put the game on a Friday night and you'll get a lot more people. Canisius? Good for Canisius. HA! They have EMT's on standby outside their gym not for any player injuries but for their scowling old-fart fanbase. Ready and willing to remind you of how relevant they were 60 years ago. Also: Dave Skogman had 12 points in 21 minutes for Davidson last night.

  8. Seems like there may be some attitude issues on the team, Coach Burke skirted around it a bit in her postgame. I was surprised Ogden didn't get some more PT. The shooting was very poor and if Winfield wants to be the go-to player, she needs to hit those free throws. Hopefully it was a kick in the ass and they do better the next time out. I'm of the opinion that we weather this season and get thru it as best as we can, Coach Burke has 7 recruits coming in next year and a bunch of our front line players this year will be gone. The Coach Burke era begins in 2023, but she can build culture now and start moving things in the right direction. Go Bulls!!

  9. Winning some games will definitely help. Last night was a good start. Looked at the box and Blocker and Ceaser were incredibly productive in roughly 10 minutes.

  10. UB sports don't have a big enough dedicated fanbase to fill the arena/stadium unless they are a very good team. It is what it is. Hopefully the fact that it was a Monday night lowered attendance more than what it would be on a weekend. As we saw with those Top 25 teams, if you win, they will show up.

  11. Very entertaining game. They need to work on their defense. Too many easy layups. They got blacked off by alot of ball screens. 54% free throw shooting isn't good. Why was the band, cheerleaders, and dazzlers "flipped" in the end section. I always thought the bad was supposed to be close to the visiting team to cause problems during timeouts. Why move them away?

  12. Nightmare scenario for the Orange. Boeheim is on the phone right now helping Dino out of the situation. Imagine the mean things UB Football players say on the field.

  15. It's all hers, but it comes from a gutted roster with 1 returning player and a coach hired in April. You notice she brought in a lot of 1 year rentals, likely the best she could get. The one player from her previous stop has not been cleared to play and I have a feeling she could help out when she is allowed to play. Nothing against the players she brought in, but I think Coach Burke brought in ready to play players, D2 champions, etc. to get us thru this season and hopefully be .500 or better. Next year is what I would call "her players" with a full recruiting class.

  16. I was very surprised how empty the season ticket area was especially sections 101-105. But it was great to see the student section filled in. Most of the season ticket holders around me in 113 seem like they didn't renew and/or were a no-show. With that said, the crowd really got into it especially near the end.

  18. Nice win to start the season. Lots of positives. Team is long and created a number of turnovers. Loved their ability to battle back. Cesar looked good. Powell played well too. Foul shooting and 3 point shooting was not good at all. Offense appeared rushed and disjointed at times. Took too many poor shots early in possession.

  19. I only saw the second half. Overall I am encouraged. Nice opening win against a tough Colgate team. Hope they continue to build on this. Also hope they get Chatman back soon, will make them deeper.

  22. Our new team’s play so far can be described as frantic and unorganized in my opinion. I like the speed and athleticism but we need to have a bit more structure. Also, anyone have an update on Sy Chatman and his recovering timetable?
