In stats, yes. Not leadership/winning. But your right, regressed for him was not the right word. I should have said didn’t reach potential. He was one of the best recruits we ever ever had. Combined with the talent around him, we should have had way more success in big games - we didn’t. Clearly he has the stats, but that is not enough when you have that much talent (and the team around him). It needs to translate to success when it counts, it didn’t. Maybe he just wasn’t the guy, but I still put this in the lack of development category, even if his stats did get better from sophomore to senior.

At the end of the day, our superstars mostly regressed under JW. Graves was a huge disappointment his final 2 years (albeit still very good). Same can be said for Williams. He put up the stats but didn’t lead the team when we needed him. Same for mbala, total regression. The only one that stayed consistent throughout or maybe got slightly better is segu. This is a 100% reflection on JW, and he should pay the price. Just the way it is. Now we go into the off-season with very few pieces any of us truly feel comfortable with. JW better have some tricks up his sleeve, otherwise we are looking at 2-3 years of potential bottom dwelling. And that’s after he had plenty of time to reload off of oats coat tail. Sad day for UB basketball.

JW is terrible, everyone knows it. Complete underachievement. And our pipe is nearly non existing. We are in trouble. Oh well.

If 5th place in MAC is the “realistic” expectation… then your right we might as well stick with Whitesell. But for people who want to see a competitive product - I guess we are unrealistic.

It’s not the same complaint. The complaint is that our students never show. At least not a material number. Only when we have big games in winning seasons, but that is it. Blaming it on winter break is a cop out. UB sport culture is terrible- that’s the issue at hand.

Agreed for the casual local fan and broad community. But when we talk about students and alumni I do not think it’s the same per se. Universities must build a culture that includes sports if you want to have long lasting connectivity. Everyone should be interested in UB winning (even without attending). This takes decades, maybe even centuries to build. But it’s an investment that must be made if we want any buzz for good or bad. The problem today, is that 95% of UB students and alumni don’t even know what division we are in or when we are playing. Never mind attending. We need to get to a point where a non sports-fan UB students/alumni at least in conversation would be positive towards the possibility of UB sports as opposed to not knowing it even exists.

Even if in session, only a few hundred students would show up. We just gotta face it, there is 0 sports culture at Buffalo. When they win, they put fans in seats but don’t expect anyone to show up during down years, including the students.

I do not think drawing a talented coach is an issue. We have done it in the past… should be able to continue to draw. Now whether we have a AD that can even eye talent - assume he will just outsource coaching search in the future - that is what we have to hope for. But I agree the terrible extension of whitesell and lack of resources really puts us in a pickle. It’s more likely we have to wait 3 - 4 years before we can get out of these extremely poor decisions. Then we will need to give new coach 2-3 years to rebuild. So yeah a decade is prob best case at this point…

Been traveling and sort of avoiding the board because everyone gets so sensitive when there is negative comments about a crappy coach. Glad to finally see everyone is in agreement now (I think). Time to face reality, Whitesell is terrible and we must get rid of him ASAP by any means necessary. Each year we wait, easily puts us 2-3 years behind on getting a team that can compete in a tournament. He has taken every piece of talent gifted to him and oversaw their significant regression and hardly recruited even 1-2 top talent players in over 3 years. We should not tolerate this performance. Period. Not coming off the success we had prior to him. I still think this team is talented/capable of stringing together a few wins in MAC tourney, but their lack of discipline and utterly mind blowing lapses in effort and production will certainly not allow them to make real noise. Whitesell is to blame, no doubt about it.

Will we even have a roster when this is done? Seems like we lost 75% of our team and gained almost nil… gotta be a rough couple years ahead.

Have to hope it’s because he wants to replace with his talent. I know we haven’t see that side pour in yet, but can only hope he has some tricks up his sleeve to fill roster,

The team is regressing. Everyone has regressed under JW going back to Graves and co. This year is just the pinnacle. Our extremely experienced and mature group only plays well for 5-10 minute stretches of each game. That’s on the coach. So while you can’t blame JW for every missed shot or ft, you can blame him for overseeing the extreme regression in our program over the last 3 years with this year turning out to be the most disappointing of the bunch - which really sucks.

Without a doubt, he should be let go. I am scared to even see what this team will look like after jw, rs and jm graduate. Might as well start the rebuild right after the season.

Didn’t watch, in Europe. Observation of the box score though, over 80% of points from 3 players…. All who are graduating. Serious question, will we even win 10 games next year?

If UB continues to struggle the way we have over the start of the season, whitesell should be on the chopping block. Period. I don’t understand why we keep focusing on why he was selected as coach. Most are In agreement that was the appropriate move at the time. But it’s 3 years later and he is squandering a talented team that was gifted to him. His rookie class is the only thing he has left to prove he should remain the coach going forward. I hope they turn it around this year and the rookies pan out… otherwise we must move on and whitesell is officially a failed hire. For now he is well on his way.

I know this is a joke, but FLJ has way more leeway for bad losses - that’s for sure. If whitesell was half the coach flj is, he’d be a smashing success.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Again, he’s been our coach 3 years. Not one player providing much impact on our roster is from whitesell… how can that not worry you? Even the most positive person has to wonder why one player wouldn’t garner any minutes from the head coach after 3years.

Whitesell has failed. Period. Keeping a roster together is great, but not if the roster underachieves every chance it gets for 3 years straight. The question is not whether the move was right at the time. I still think it was… at the prospect of keeping a talented group together. But fast forward 3 years, and now the writing is on the wall: - Can’t motivate a talented group. Constant inconsistency and discipline. - Oversees the regression of individual players… Williams and graves - Terrible In game coach. - 0 prospects in pipe that can keep UB above 100. Perhaps I am missing something here and we have an ace up sleeve, but I don’t see it. Whitesell is damaged goods. We must move on before we give him anymore time to squander a rebuild. A rebuild that is needed because he didn’t bring in anything over 3 years to succeed oats work all while failing to reach the potential left behind.
