dj_paige
Photo credit: Mark DeBortoli The UB Volleyball team put together an all-around effort to pick up their first MAC win, a 3–0 victory over Akron. Buffalo snaps a 4 match and 11 set losing streak. The Bulls were led by junior right-side Stacia Gollogly, who got her first start this year at that position and picked up 15.5 points on 11 kills, a team high 2 aces and 5 blocks. She did not commit an attacking error and hit 0.611. Gollogly, however, had a lot of help, as senior middle blocker Abby Leigh had 10 kills, just 1 error and a team high 8 blocks. Fifth year outside hitter Cali Assaley had her best night as a Bull, leading the team with 12 kills, just one error, and hit 0.476. Buffalo won the first set after Akron played even most of the way. At 17–17, Buffalo went on a 4–0 run, three of those points coming on kills from Gollogly. The Bulls would win 25–22. In the second set, the score was 16–15 in favor of Buffalo, and then the Bulls scored the next eight points, four of those coming on kills from Gollogly. That 8–0 run was served by sophomore libero Maria Futey, who has put together long serving runs many times this season. The third set was never close, and Buffalo won easily 25-17. For the match, Buffalo hit a scorching 0.385, as the team's passing was markedly better than a weekend ago at Western Michigan. Buffalo held Akron to just 0.152 hitting. Buffalo had 11 blocks to just 4 from Akron. Sophomore setter Mandy Leigh had 34 assists. Futey led the team with 11 digs. Notes: Sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavská was the only UB player who struggled. She had just 4 kills and hit 0.000, and also 3 service errors. Although Trebichavská leads the MAC in aces, she did not pick up an ace, and in the second set, Buffalo coach Scott Smith took her out of the serving rotation and replaced her with senior defensive specialist Jenna Sonnenberg, who did not commit an service error the rest of the way. Sorry, but I don't seem to have a good picture of Stacia Gollogly. Buffalo returns to Alumni Arena this weekend, facing Northern Illinois in two matches — Friday, September 30 at 6pm (ESPN+) and Saturday, October 1 at 1pm (YouTube). Akron libero Lauren Latka is so popular in the Akron area that they named a potato pancake after her.
