People keep talking about about money for Oats in the range of 1.2 to 1.5 million. Especially from a P5 institution. If he already makes 600k the difference is from 600k to 1.2 is 600k. So really the question is will Oats walk away for 600k? Furthermore if we give him a raise of 200k or 300k bringing his total to 800-900k then the question is will he walk away for for that extra 300-400k? I’m not saying it’s chunp change, but is that enough to make Nate bounce. And leave everything he’s built here on and off the court. Enough to bounce and take a great recruiting class with him? I think the addition of Williams and potential Hawkings make staying a more compelling option and becoming the Gonzaga of the East.

I don't know what the number is for him to bounce, but anything less than him being the highest paid coach in the MAC should come as motivation to do so. Aside from that caveat I don't think he wants to chase the money and would be fine here as long we show him that respect and the support to upgrade practice facilities.

  2. I'll be rocking the Hyatt Arcade, as will an old friend of mine. I'm expecting big numbers as I'm sure the community is expecting a deep run and willing to roll the dice. My dilemma this year wasn't if I should wait until Friday/Saturday, but if I should hold off for the Big Dance.

  3. We were better than most MAC championship winners that year and did decently out of conference (I think we beat 3-4 eventual conference champs that year) but we finished in like a 7 way tie for 2nd with 7 conference losses. Even with that being a very good year for the MAC, and our RPI being something like upper 40's there was no way the committee was going to show us any love. Even in the NIT we were made to play a play in game.

  4. Anecdotal, but I do remember Reggie being slow to call a timeout when we clearly needed one. Yeah, in hindsight it looks bad, but everything went wrong there, including Cage going from 4-4 in the first half to 0-4 or whatever the stat was from 3 in the second. I hated Ohio then for many reasons aside from just that night, but I have more feelings toward  Akron and even the fans at St Bonaventure who still live in the 1960's at this point.

With that said, I hope we crush them.

  5. As much as I want to give the current students a hard time for not getting rowdy I can see how it’s not always easy when you don’t face much adversity. We’ve been pretty spoiled at home thus far and I hope it continues. I know in my day (I feel old) we yelled our heads off all game but at the same time we were commonly the underdog trying to either edge out a win or slay a giant. We no longer get home games against giants and have been lucky enough to go most home games with little to adversity against teams we are expected to beat. When we have needed crowd support we’ve gotten it but we’ve been lucky enough to not really need it. The tourney will be a grind and I expect us as a fan base to do our part.

He does do a lot for us. Defending, rebounding, controlling the pace on the offensive end. But, he's not making any shots. More than anything right now, we need him to step up offensively and make baskets. He is so talented and much better than what his stats reflect.

He says it's a slump but it has to be something physical. I'm hoping it is just mental since that can be overcome. We can get through MAC teams with him not hitting shots but if we want another marquee win like Arizona we need him to be a threat from outside. If Harris from 2019 showed up against AZ last year, I don't think we win that game despite the ultimately 21 point win.

  7. There actually weren't many empty seats from what I remember seeing. If you're basing it on the picture above I think the black/blue shirts people were wearing against the black/blue seating background make it look like there are a lot of empty seats in the distance which are actually occupie

Of note, the ticket office had a "sold out" sign on the window.  I guess this is about where we max out for people.  It's unfortunate to see empty seats though.

i'm open to suggestions for a different way to put a fork in the game.  It's been done here well before anyone in MLS or US Soccer was doing "I Believe That We WILL Win" early in the game.  And I'm pretty sure our fans borrowed it from another MAC school (I'm thinking Miami or Ohio).

I can't really come up with much better. I am loving the band playing "All we Do Is Win" afterwards unfortunately that probably wouldn't work out as a stand alone chant.

Do you guys still the “U” “B” back and forth across arena? That was cool...

I don't remember seeing that one in a while but perhaps I've just missed it since I only make it to game sporadically now. It worked great when the students were split between being behind the basket and in the corner on that adjacent side about 10 -12 years ago.

  10. This came across my mind last night while looking at the players banners hanging from the rafters at AA. What does it take to get that honor and how long after playing are you eligible? I would think that would have to be more than just a UB Athletic Hall of Fame induction otherwise I'd expect to see more names up there.

As someone who came in as a freshman in 02-03 Turner Battle would be the first name I would expect to see up there from my personal memory. I would expect to someday see CJ up there,.

For those that were there last year, I think it is understandable why they want to move it. In the rare occurrence that Toledo and Buffalo make it to the finals. It is a mad house. Last year I went to HB then to Flannery's because I couldn't get the drink at the bar.

HB is the Toledo bar. They just haven't been good enough to make it to Semis or Finals so we didn't have an issue. I like the idea of Southern Tier being the new location especially since it is brand new and I heard it is more spacious than HB

It makes sense that we should have our own separate bars and I'm sure Southern Tier will be a fine venue but I loved that layout at Hairy Buffalo with the private room upstairs, the proximity (yeah I know, Southern Tier is only like 200 feet down the road) and the fact that it has Buffalo in the name.

As Michael Bolton from Office space put it, why should we have to change when they're the ones who suck.

Nothing personal, but I hate that chant for basketball, in the last 30 seconds.  To me, it’s more of a 10 minute left soccer chant.

I feel just the opposite about it. I love it in basketball just once at the end of a game but whenever it gets pulled out during a soccer game I cringe. Perhaps it was just ruined by overuse during the 2014 World Cup where it would come out like 2 dozen times a game.

For most of this season we've wondered, "what's going to happen when they start shooting as well as we know they can?"  So many games they won but we thought, they didn't play well (for them).  Tonight we saw what happens when those shots dropped.  An absolute barrage that buried a poor, overwhelmed Ohio team.  I haven't forgotten 2005 or 2013 - for that and more, you deserved this tonight, Ohio.

UB seemed to concentrate on taking away the perimeter from the Bobcats, which meant they were going to allow some aggravating baskets underneath. Ohio ended up 3 for 11 from three, and those three were probably all late in the game. Until then Ohio hadn't even taken many from outside.  UB has had so many nights where they weren't hitting from behind the arc, that when tonight got going I hoped they would save a few for Friday.  The Bulls went to a small lineup (even for them) at some point in the first half and didn't look back.

Graves - he was on fire, and rolled with it.  He always looks like a focused, fired up competitor
CJ - the baskets started dropping for him too, plus a couple of his customary plucky rebounds underneath. There are times when he beats his defender with a quick move by the perimeter, has an open jumper...but proceeds to keep going.  Take the open jumper!
Dontay - got burned in the second half by his mark on a long pass towards the basket, and you could tell this lit a fire under him.  He rattled off several baskets after that.
Harris - he uses his long reach so well going to the basket, whether to get separation past a defender or for a reverse layup.
Williams - a plucky put-back in the first half and actually made a three tonight
Segu - so many point guards at this level can dribble and play defense but can't shoot consistently from outside.  Clark could do all of that last year, and Segu might be the next one who can.
Jordan - a stronger game from him than some of the previous ones

Ohio looks like a team devoid of confidence right now.  #0 may be good someday, but he looks like a 13-year-old out there. I wonder what #4 said to get a technical - if he was taunting, well when you're down 41 points in the second half, the time to gloat has long passed.  Ohio got some slick buckets underneath early but couldn't cope with a barrage of three's from the Bulls.  Saul Phillips is the highest paid coach in the MAC, and based on tonight, you wonder what if anything is going on there.

Crowd - another bumper crowd on a weeknight.  I heard there were a lot of traffic backups out front.  I know it's tough to keep the noise up when the team is up by so many points.  And there are so many new people there these days.  But enough have been there enough times already, can they please at least start with: horns up on foul shots, and cheering along with the 'Let's Go Bulls' cowbell routine.  There are entirely not enough people taking part in these, and these are pretty easy things to go along with.

I'll give Mcrea some love too. He was hitting 'em too.

Let's do this for the next couple of games, have a closer one back at Ohio, and put BG in their place come end of MAC play. I am fully torqued
