"Why didn't you make another uninspiring hire for continuity and roster retention?"

In the era of transfer portal, you can't make the roster retention hire because you can essentially rebuild an entire team in a year or two without anybody losing eligibility. We'll see how it works with WBB

There’s a big difference between hiring an old a coach who’s been around for years and and up and coming 40 something year old guy. I actually think Simpson had the demeanor to be a good HC

To his credit he turned our offense into a dominant one and to have one of the best offenses in the country at Kansas of all places.  Must be doing something right.

Good mid majors pluck assistants from current staffs. UB should have hired Kotelnicki or Chris Simpson as Leipold’s replacement instead of trying to reset. Ended up losing tons of good players to the portal.

The thing about scheduling is that both teams need to agree to it. Funny how that works.

Well then attendance is going to continue to suck then. Crap stadium, crap conference schedule. Only way to get butts in the seat is to schedule more appealing non conference games or move conferences and option 2 isn’t happening. If they couldn’t draw when Leipold had them at the top of the MAC than when are they going to draw?

  4. They could start by hosting teams in the Non conference that mean anything. I know your not going to draw Baylor every year but they need to play teams that will draw both local, alumni, but also opposing teams. Army draws well. I’d think getting teams from Florida would draw a bit. Teams that put up points like SMU. I’d love to watch SMU@ UB,  but I’m not gonna go to Wagner@UB, UMass, Temple etc etc

Lol, Lance lost to Albany. Mo just got his initiation to Bulls football.

He got that last year with him being terrible. It’s now just sunken to new lows. Can’t use the I don’t have my talent excuse with all the transfers he brought in. At least Leipold had something to show in year 1 going 6-6.

  6. Lance Leipold doesn’t seem so bad now after all the people were knocking him here for not winning a MAC title but he just beat WVU in Morgantown and the new guy is clearly a failure already. People will be wishing for those 8 win seasons with the MAC title appearance on occasion

Grad transfer DE from NC State. Had 3 sacks last year.

Kante is originally from NYC. He actually officially visited Buffalo when he was in high school but got a couple late power 5 offers, one being from NC State. He visited under Leipold’s staff so it makes sense why he visited Kansas. Maybe he thought the opportunity to play and to be much closer to home was bigger than another P5 opportunity

Seems like a big leap in responsibility to me. Maybe Elkin knew Mo was offering something better. Plus Duke football isn’t that awesome

So your saying to me that he knew Elko was getting a job, not taking Bailey with him and then decided to wait a month to fire Cauthen because why. There was competition for Bailey? I think that’s highly unlikely. What I think it happening is Linguist wanted to call the defense and hired a young guy to do all the leg work for him and gave him that title, otherwise it doesn’t make sense. If Bailey is some wunderkid football coach then Elko would be the one who knew it and would have for sure taken him to Duke

  9. Here’s my issue with this. If Bailey was held in high regard, and everyone keeps saying he was a big understudy of Mike Elko, than why didn’t Elko take Bailey with him to Duke. I’m not even talking as a DC but I would think that if he was that good that Elko would have brought him on as a position coach on his staff. It’s not like Bailey had a comparable job at A&M

There are several things blatantly wrong with your post.  It must be a joke.

I hope you are just kidding or not an alumnus.  If you are an alumnus, your post above has devalued my degree.

I’m not an alumnus and I was actually was closer to the former program than you’ll ever know. He got paid, people are mad cause he left plain and simple. The talent level has dropped because Patterson and Koonce and Awosika, Nunn we’re gone. As you can see there are severe limitations with the QB position. I’m not wrong. The program was going to take a dip this year. They won 2 straight bowl games made 2 MAC titles etc with the former staff. Now picture that same staff passing on a big payday to possibly go 7-5 or 6-6 this year. How many power 5 offers are coming his way next season? The answer is Zero. He set himself and his staff up for life with that job. If they fail at Kansas then they end up at a MAC school in the Midwest like Solich did at Ohio making the same or slightly more than they did at Buffalo.

I get it as an alumni of the school it’s hard to see the program take a dive this year and it’s easy to blame it on Leipold leaving so late and taking 3 starters with him. Even with those guys the QB is still limited, the RB and Oline downgraded even with Novitsky still there.

The new head coach needs time but he has already given reason to doubt with in game decisions like constantly trotting out McNulty who clearly can’t get it done. The new staff could easily be 4-2 right now but haven’t helped themselves tbh either

I understand this -- I think everyone does.  And what you write makes sense.

But there was another option.  What if LL leads the Bulls (and their running offense) to a 9 - 3 or 8 - 4 season, which includes a bowl bid?  Such a scenario would increase his chances of landing a better, long term gig and, importantly, winning.

Lance took the money, plain and simple.  But there were other options that could have resulted in him "getting the money" and "winning".  That would have required him to trust in his ability and his team this year.

Oh you mean like Mo Linguist is doing with UB at soon to be 2-4 and 0-2 in the MAC. What if he knew they were in a rebuild mode at UB and a 5-7 or 6-6 season would ruin his prestige. He did the same thing PJ Fleck did. He realized a lot of his top talent was leaving and cashed in before his star got dimmed

  12. So I was told by a coach who is now at one of the top FCS programs in the country that you have to understand the dynamics of Coaches taking bad jobs for the money and why they have to take them. Leipold when he first started was making 400K and eventually was up to 600k a year or so when he left. An absolutely great salary for most.

Now Leipold signed a 6 year 16.5 million dollar contract. 2.75 million per year. If Leipold stayed at Buffalo, it would have taken him 4 1/2 years to make the same salary he’s getting in 1 year at Kansas. Now imagine both scenarios. Leipold turns KU into a 6-6, 7-5 program. Well to Kansas that’s great and he prob gets extended and gets a raise to 3.25-3.75 million setting himself up further for the future.

Now your saying cmon what’s the chances it happens. Fair enough, Leipold flames out after 3 years and gets fired like most people who go to KU. Well Leipold has shown that he can build a successful programs at small schools and he ends up back into the MAC or one of the group of 5s. No one would blame him at a group of 5 school because no one wins at Kansas. He gets offered 700,000 or 800,000 at one of those types of schools and still is a HC basically where he was 4 years ago but has set himself and his family up for life

I'm sort of relieved it would not be Ianello or Kotelnicki, I don't assume staying in the family is the best move, nor that they are the best choices. But now the challenge for any new coach will be a smaller free agent assistant pool this time of year. Lots of work to be done seeing which assistants with jobs a new HC can pull to UB.

If they were staying in house I would have gone with Zebrowski or Simpson but it appears only Ianello is a candidate and tbh he might make more as the AHC at Kansas.

I could see Larry Kehres getting a look

  14. I’ll say this, great Mid Majors conference teams in my opinion hire from within and don’t go outside the tree. If I’m Buffalo and Leipold Leaves, I’m looking to hire one of his assistants for the HC position. They do have some guys  who could do the job that would like the pay increase. I’d look at Zebrowski or Simpson. Young guys who were molded in Leipold’s ways and could keep the organization and systems in place that were already established instead of turning things over

  15. It would be attractive for him, big bump in salary, accomplished everything you can do at Buffalo(build facilities, win a MAC title, become ranked, win a bowl), when he was at Whitewater they recruited Chicago and Michigan like it was no ones business.

Coaches always want to make it to the top. You can say he’s comfortable at 56 but there is no doubt in the back of his mind saying I only have so many years to do this let’s try to win a D1 title

Looks like Fedor, Scott (to JuCO per Twitter), Dadaboe and Nolden are missing from the 2019 Spring Roster.  Coulld be they graduated, transferred or are medical redshirts,

WR looks light in regards to speed unless Nunn becomes the "go to" deep threat.

Nolden transferred to Hampton it appears, Dadeboe is looking to transfer via twitter but nothing on where he’s heades, nothing on Fedor, Scott you already got and trust me Rodney Scott wasnt at UB because of his speed he was there due to his lack of it. He 40 timed at a Miami laser timer in the 4.8s out of HS which is why all the big schools passed on him after offering

  17. It will either be Vantrease or Myers. I’d give the nod to Vantrease to start the season.

Vantrease should still be a RS Sophmore due to the new rules. If you noticed during the season, Leipold would put Dom Johnson in for mop up duty because he was trying to redshirt Vantrease this year because he couldn’t last year. It’s not because Johnson was the primary backup

  18. Leipold has a history of “Greyshirting” players. If you recall Jelani Foster was actually going to be apart of the 2018 class.

I would guess that both Doty and and Evan Davis fall under this category and would join the team in Jan of 2020. Same could be said for Logic Hudgens who hasn’t signed his LOI as well.

I would guess that Malik Brooks wasn’t taken because of Grades. I mean he had two offers despite his high talent level and flipped after 3 days to Monmouth. Makes me think Buffalo took his commitment then got his transcripts and said wish he’s not gonna qualify. Then he surprisingly commits to Monmouth in the early period. This is just speculation in my part.

UB also got Anthony “Caron” Robinson from Aquinas in Rochester. Not sure if he is a Greyshirt or a PWO, but he is definitely a Division 1 talent and could make an impact at Buffalo down the line. I encourage people to take a look if you have never seen him before.
