  1. I originally received an invite from "Director of Annual Giving" and a request for RSVP.  Then 2 days later, I received another invite from them with no mention of the RSVP.  Then, it was on Twitter a few days later.

I think they couldn't attract enough of the donors so they opened it up to everybody.

I think it's more important for people to show up for games than a PR session with the new coach.

WBB officially signed 4 players today, two of them being 6'2" so some size coming in. They all look like they could be solid contributors and some international experience too. Should be exciting!

    https://ubbulls.com/news/2023/4/13/womens-basketball-womens-basketball-announces-additions-to-2023-24-roster.aspx

Actually, it looks like only one new announcement.  Rana Elhusseini. Others were announced previously.

Interesting that UB has already updated their website with the 2023-2024 roster:

    https://ubbulls.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster

It is showing Baron, Mashaire, Johnson, Ogden, and Watson returning.

And Burton, Craig, Elhusseini, and Ojala transferring in.

No mention of their previous High School commits of:

Madison Heiss, 5-10 SG, Highland Park HS (Dallas, TX) [committed 8/3/2022]
Paige Kohler, 5-7 PG, Olmsted Falls HS (OH) [committed 6/20/2022]
Paula López, Alicante, Spain [committed 7/3/2022]
Ella Take, 6-0 G/W, Capital Courts Academy (Ottawa, ON) / hometown: Kingston, ON [committed 8/3/2022]
Jakayla Thompson, 5-8 CG, duPont Manual HS (Louisville, KY) [committed 10/17/2022]
Ella Weaver, 6-0 SG/W, William Monroe HS (Stanardsville, VA) [committed 8/23/2022]
Timberlynn Yeast, 5-9 W, Mercer County HS (Harrodsburg, KY) [committed 8/22/2022]

This would make for a total of 16 which is too many.

The big question, will they have a full roster by the end of the season?

I would be happier if this came in response of a few new players signing right now or new that a lot of other players removed themselves from the portal. This makes player 7 that is leaving and the first after we have a new coach.

Actually, the 8th to enter the transfer portal. 3 have actually left (Ceaser, Hardnett, Mading) and technically, the 3rd to enter the portal with the new coach (Hardnett, Jack, and Slaughter).

    But, who's count.

Who's hasn't entered the Transfer Portal? Smith, Adams, Williamson and K. Jones?

I'd be more excited if/when I start seeing new transfers go to Buffalo.

UB has Alumni has very high net worth people. They have no idea this forum exists. They also don't care it exists, will put no effort into visiting this forum, nor think about it ever.

What they do have is money that they are willing to spend. We need to do much better outreach. A meet and greet with the new Mens Basketball coach isn't a Men's Basketball event. That is thinking mid to low major. It should be considered a major university event and treat as such.

You do realize that I also received an email from the Director of Annual Giving and Stewardship about the Meet and Greet with the Coach on Wednesday (4/12). I'm sure that the people with more money than me have also received this email.

Don't worry, if you have money, UB will find you and want a part of it.

Are you telling me the alumni office doesn't have access to donor/affinity data which could enable sending a segmented email to interested/active alumni+ donors?

My point being, you want the Alumni Association to send out emails about UB Basketball. By your logic, UB Basketball should be sending out emails about UB (e.g. Distinguished Speaker Series).

Have you tried to login to your "UB Direct" account and make sure you have access to the UB Bulls Email information?  The link is "ub-connect.com".   There are instructions on how to register and how to sign-in. You can then go to your profile and select which types of emails you want to receive from UB.

Back to the original point, you will have many opportunities going forward to meet the new coach.

This is [one of] the problem at UB. Everything stays siloed.

So the UB Distinguished Speaker Series at UB should also be sent out through the UB Men's Basketball Email list?  If they did, I'd unsubscribe.

I already get emails from UB Athletics, UB Men's Basketball, UB Women's Basketball, UB Office of Alumni Engagement, UB Ticket Office, UB Engineering, among many others.   I don't need more emails.

The UB Office of Alumni Engagement did send out an email in March about the MAC Tournament.

Yes, it would be nice if there was a way to "opt in" to these lists. But, if you're really interested in UB sports, you'd just need to follow this forum!!

With the right coaching, Jack could become a big problem in the MAC. Looking forward to seeing him develop.

I was very impressed with Jack early in the season, especially his post play.  But he seemed to get himself in a lot of foul trouble especially in important games. Probably trying too hard. In the 5 games he fouled out, he averaged only 16 minutes.

As I've said before, I really didn't see many set players under Whitesell to try and get him the ball more inside.

I hope he stays and the coaches can work on him. He's still young and has a lot of potential.

  8. Transfer Portal Stats:

    School Req	Trans
    Central Michigan 9 1
    Miami 7 1
    Bowling Green 6 1
    Buffalo 6 1
    Toledo 5 1
    Ball State 4 2
    Akron 3 0
    Western Michigan 3 0
    Northern Illinois 3	1
    Eastern Michigan 2 0
    Kent State 1 0
    Ohio 0 0

What's going on at Central Michigan with 9 players entering the transfer portal and one (so far) having left?

  9. There has been a lot of negative comments about the UB Basketball program lately (up until the new coach was hired), but I'd be interested in what people think are UB's (basketball) positives that could be used to sell this program to somebody (i.e. coach, player, or fan).

Is it the Arena, history, fan base, True Blue?

I haven't watch the Coaches New Conference yet, but he seems to have the energy to promote this program.

I am no expert, so trying to get more informed. Was Zid hurt somewhat by his poor outside shooting as his defender could focus on stopping the drive to the hoop?

Zid was the worst in D1 basketball on FG3% at 17.6% for those attempting on average more than 3 per game. Shot 5 of 38 (13.1%) from behind the arc in the last 12 games.

Zid reminds me of Davonta Jordan with his drives to the basket, but Jordan made the threes as well.

As a team, UB was ranked 279 out of 352 D1 teams on 3FG%. This year was the lower 3PT% for the team (32.2%) in over the last 15 years.

Very streaky team with the threes.  If they made them, they won. If they didn't, they lost. The nine lowest three point percentage games (26.7% or lower), they lost.

Similarly, I think they made more threes if they had better ball movement. Under Whitesell, I'm not sure I saw many set plays, ball movement or good ball screens.

Turner Battle maybe? Why not? He’s paid his dues. I doubt he’d turn down the offer.

Having a tough first year back in the Monsignor Martin League going 7-18 overall and 2-12 in conference play. He's not the coach but they expect him to raise the level in all their sports.

I think NIL is getting to much attention. Not every athlete ad a P5 is getting NIL money. Even then not every one is getting significant money. Even in the P5 schools the money isn't the same. I think there is room for us to complete.

Were not going to be able to get Arch Manning and his $3 mil+ in NIL. But then again we were never going to get him anyway.  But the 7th or 8th guy off the bench at Duke who NIL might be a couple thousand. We can compete with by offering more money and more playing time.

I agree. Educate me. What benefit does NIL have on a mid-major player?  I just can't seen there being that much benefits involved except to maybe a top mid-major player (which none of the current UB players will ever be). I assume the NIL money comes from sponsors and not from the schools.

This guy McCollum seems like a diamond. He must have some recruiting sense, else how do you get guys to play for D2 NW Missouri St?

All his current players are from the Midwest. 5 from Missouri, 2 each from Nebraska, Kansas, and Illinois and 1 from Iowa. Not picked up anybody recently on the D2 Transfer portal and lost a couple to the portal over the past few years.

  14. Just found out that a player can not enter themselves into the transfer portal. They must do it through the school's compliance officer. And the school must enter their names within 2 days of the request.

I assume schools enter the request ASAP and don't "stall" the 2 days.

Or you keep him on "staff" for the month, negotiate the buyout, etc. I highly doubt we are paying the 100k buyout.

I would bet that a donor offered to pay the 100K to have him fired ASAP.

Or keep him on payroll until then but not as the Basketball Coach.

I just can't see UB paying the 100K.
