  1. Strictly a guess but perhaps Alnutt doesn't want Hodgson because he sees Hodgson as another short timer who will look to make a quick jump. Not that the next guy won't do that also, but if we're going to be a stepping stone he wants that next guy to be his guy. Hodgson is third down the tree from Hurley and the Hurley/Oats/Hodgson as a group we're extremely inexperienced coming in. Maybe an outside coach with real HC experience could replenish that core better and leave behind the next Oats when he makes a jump. Hurley really left us a nice gift.

Another thought, perhaps Alnutt had a conversation with Hodgson saying if he stays as an assistant under Whitsell a few years he can have the keys to the whole thing. You could see if that happened why he'd be so pissed al Bryan posing in Bama gear on recruiting trips.

For me, it's just still a bit of a shock. Once we get a new coach, and I embrace it, then I'll get over it. But I'll probably never like Oats after he just disappeared in the fashion he did.

Agree. Two things need to happen for me to move on. First obviously announce a coach. Second, a half hearted thank you statement from Oats, stroking the University, city, athletes and fans. Telling us how great we are, how much we meant to him and his family and how he wishes us the best.

Is it odd #2 hasn't happened yet?

I mean isn't an agent's job to make his client as much money as possible, in turn making himself as much money as possible?  It would be irresponsible for him not to do that.  Him doing research and not just signing on the dotted line of the largest contract seems pretty reasonable.  Oats made it clear the Gonzaga vision was always contingent on support from the University and 800k and no dedicated practice facility isn't that.  If you convinced yourself that he was gonna stay here for pennies then that's on you.  I'm probably as romantic about the program as anybody but I don't know how Oats could have been any more straight forward than he was.

Well said. I could see a scenario where a guy like Oats would be content with 850k, especially if he kept moving that number upwards every few years. It's happened before in human history. But if I'm the agent getting such a small cut, I'd do anything to convince my client to sign for 3x's elsewhere.

  4. I knew nothing of Campbell before you guys mentioned him. Looking into him I'm feeling pretty meh. That hire would signal were content to go back what we were under Witherspoon. I can't see this guy + a combination of UB's facilities and offerings = any kind of upward trending.

Unrelated to the thread: Anyone feel better about UB losing to TT seeing what they are doing to Michigan right now?
