What about Lightfoot? Do they not think they have much of a shot even though they made his top 5?

I think this list more or less shows what they will do with the returning players.

With only 2 2021 guys that would imply two of  Brewton, Nickelberry, Brock, and Fagan are likely coming back and then they will use 2 more scholarships on these guys. Then that would fill out the roster

Shouldn’t the Bulls assume that Jack will replace Graves’ role, and concentrate on getting some good freshmen instead of trying to fill the roster with more upperclassmen? Jack is coming from a better conference and has impressive stats. Molson? I wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole at this point. ‘Ticket’ Gaines? He’s got zero playing time. I wouldn’t gamble on him, although he might be the real deal.

We need impact players when Mballa, Segu, and Williams graduate. Do you really trust some 18 year old freshman? I agree we need to get a few but we have to solidify the next superstar on the team. A guy like Gaines and the size and obviously some talent to attract Tennessee. I agree about Molson, don’t think we need him and would rather use it for a freshman transfer like Hardnett or a actual freshman.

Posted details under recruiting - he chose FIU to stay close to home.

Would anyone else love to see us go after some D2 superstars trying to transfer up? If the P5 school are going to plunk smaller schools shouldnt we do that same?

I feel like basketball has a huge opportunity looking down a division as there are so many players and talent evaluation is so hard. Also kids sometimes grow a lot or develop a smoother stroke.

I know this is off topic but freshman have been showing out at Buffalo. Take George Wolo for example, he’s a lineman that got to play a ton this year. It’s rare to see freshman play in general but even rarer to see a freshman play so regularly on the line, especially with such a veteran core of lineman

I saw a tweet a few months back from a national media person  that basically said, in the Northeast if LL offers a kid, the next day the kids school has about 15 calls to learn more about the kid. He is an extremely well respected identifier of talent. It shows with our team too, we have a significant amount of Walk-ons in our 2 deep and obviously the under recruited players succeeding speaks for itself.

Also, BG who swept UB, and has a much better overall record, is 21 slots behind UB in KenPom because of an arbitrary "luck" category it wants to implement.

Luck isn't measure, that's subjective. So we want to use that as an unbiased look. This means we are using someone else's subjective way to try to look at luck.

Luck isn't shooting 60% from the FT line. That's not bad luck. Luck isn't running tempo up 6 with 2 minutes left. Neither of those are bad luck. The team will continue to lose under 4 minutes as they have 5 times this year. They are 0-5 in games decided in the last 4 minutes.

Agreed and I think the "luck" formula is roughly based on that. When the team is suppose to win late and doesn't there is luck attributed to losing. But all of us watching the game clearly see it is coaching. Could we have won a couple of the close games? Sure. But should we have? Probably not, we don't execute down the stretch and that is a direct correlation to coaching.

Additionally - something I havent seen people mention about Whitesell is how bad his recruiting has been. We have missed on basically everyone besides Mballa. Next year we lose a good chunk of our team, does anyone here have any confidence he is going to be able to fill the gaps? Once we lose Oates' last guys (Segu & Williams) we could be right back to the Reggie days.

Recruiting Misses: Savion, Malik, Nickleberry, Brewton, Hardnett, Chance, Skogman

    Recruiting Wins: Mballa.

Skimmed the posts here after being busy... like others I was down about the result of the Kent State game.

But these results are not crazy.

UB is currently 111th in KenPom.  That is Whitesell's second year at the helm.  What was Oats' team at the end of his second year?  122th in KenPom.  Oats' team was lower performing in his second year than Whitesell's second year.

No one is going to make the claim that Whitesell is as good of a coach as someone making millions a year.  We all know that if a coach is good they won't be at Buffalo for anything other than building their resume on to better things.  But it is crazy to make the claims that the program isn't in good shape.

Great to point out the KenPom ranking but KenPom quantifies total game and how it is played (additionally KenPom rankings also use priors). I think what most people are mad about here is the coaching specifically JW's lineup choices and late game handling. I dont think anyone would argue the team has some talent but he is a bad coach. The talent is keeping them in games and he is doing nothing to help.

Playing Brock more than 8 minutes a game is a fire able offense in itself.

Going to be a tough game. Central is 3-1 in conference and 9-0 at home. And they can score. So our defense will be really tested in what could be a track meet. If we play defense we win. If we let them get up and down bc of turnovers and get easy buckets we’re screwed.

Kevin McKay is their main scorer. 6’5 guard averaging about 15 a game and is also their leading rebounder with 6 a game. He shooting 66% from the field. Crazy percentage. Interestingly enough he doesn’t take or make many 3s. Will be interesting to see who guards him.

McKay has not played in their last 2 games. Havent really seen any info on that

We can agree to disagree on the agility because neither of us can be proven right, but Bertram's last block of the night came two mins into the second half on a D2 all-American. So the block point was factually incorrect. Additionally if you don't think Smart hacked away in the post you remember a different Smart than me. His BEST season at UB he committed 7.5 fouls per 40 minutes.

We will need Brock to play 6-8 minutes a game and spell Mballa. He will need to rebound and do his best to hold his own on defense. I think he will be able to do that. He looks slimmer and more agile than previous years. If Mballa gets in foul trouble vs. a bigger team might need him more. My guess is we will go with smaller lineups when that happens though.

    https://247sports.com/Player/Josiah-Freeman-46054198/

I saw him in the recruiting speculation thread but I think he now deserves his own. Josiah Freeman was offered in June per his Twitter:

He's got other offers from a host of MAAC schools (Siena, Quinnipiac, St. Peter's, Rider, Manhattan) as well as a host of other Mid-Majors (UNC Greensboro, Hoftstra, East Carolina,  George Mason).

Segu just posted an Instagram update of Freeman in a UB jersey. Looks like we may have someone on campus for a visit?

Confirmed he was on campus, he was at practice on Saturday

Absolutely agree, there’s a ton of talent out there. Look at the recruiting class the staff brought in on such short notice, very late in the recruiting year

Let’s not forget too with how big the portal is now, JW’s plan might be to leave open spots to get transfer talent in

We need to get moving on recruiting or at least hear some buzz. Schools are getting pledges left and right. BG got two this week alone. Time we start hearing something.

I think we are recruiting a higher caliber of player than a lot of MAC schools. I think it is okay we havent gotten any commits yet, it is about going after the right guys

I think it depends a lot on the game situation and how our offense/defense is looking. But going for it on 4th can make or break a game.

With Vantrease has the punter now our expected yardage per punt should drop significantly, so we should be going for it more on 4th in the middle of the field. Not sure is LL and the staff look at it that way or not, but IMO we should be.
