This is why "just give him a chance" doesn't play out. Mediocrity left us with no donor base, no energy from the department and no interest in the job. What a travesty of a hire (they I desperately wanted to defend)

You know, I was one of those people who, while I wasn’t happy with the hire, felt like we give him four years to figure it out. I was absolutely wrong. His tenure devalued the head coaching position here. Really unfortunate.

Going back to my previous post about budget and politics.

I'm going to add one more. There is something massive about to come out about the program.  Either sanctions, violations, etc. Maybe a move to a lower conference.

Man, I really hope you’re wrong

You know, I’ve put some thought into this. I know it’s a long shot, and I doubt that it happens, especially with the lack of attendance, and success recently, but a push to the ACC seems like the most realistic option.

The B10 and SEC and killing the other three power conferences. FSU and Clemson are looking to move to the SEC. Seems like they’re going to lose ND to the B10. They lost out on expansion with UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston from the AAC.

Realistically to complete, they need to add three schools, but ideally five. I imagine the first three would be Temple, USF, and Memphis would first round additions.

But if a second round of additions took place, if we got our shit together, which seems less likely now, could see that being us and Tulane?

Unless I’m just being overly optimistic.

I’d love to hear other opinions on this!

Yikes, now seeing we were turned down by Calhoun. Never mind 😂

At what point do we consider it a top priority to get out of our one-bid league?

One tidbit from a Twiiter spaces broadcast last night, an insider said McCollum was flattered by UB's interview and interest, but it may not be the right fit for him. The tone was not positive, now have to see if UB steps up if he has ?'s on money/league/recruting to WNY.

That’s not ideal. Very concerning. I’m starting to think McCollum and Cohen turned us down. I hope I’m just being a Debbie-downer, and that isn’t the case. Would make my Monday much more difficult to get through if that’s really the case.

It isn’t the same there are a lot more Division I basketball schools over 300 than Division I football schools over 100. Ben McCollum isn’t that young he is middle aged. John Beilein had connections here and plus Canisius College was in no position to be picky with the low money they were offering. This UB candidate Ben McCollum is more a Canisius College replacing Reggie Witherspoon candidate than a UB candidate. But UB spends like Canisius College so here we are. John Beilein also had Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and no NIL or transfer portals to deal with. UB spending $500,000 only to hire potentially a Division II basketball coach with no area ties and no understanding of the UB program is concerning. Nate Oats started as a assistant to Bobby Hurley so he had a understanding of the workings of a Division I UB Bulls basketball program so it isn’t the same.

UB Bulls basketball went from the top of the mountain in the lowly MAC basketball to begging Division II coaches wonderful what could go wrong? UB is taking all the risk on the potential Ben McCollum hire I say no if it was my choice which it isn’t. The Ben McCullom is just a wreck less potential hire because of cancel culture around UB and some of the UB Donors anything but Alabama basketball insanity you don’t run a winning big time Division I basketball program like that. But what do I know I was only in Division I college basketball with the Canisius Golden Griffins in my opinion. UB Horns Up! Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo

Is it a joke that you end every post with “ Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo,” because the dichotomy between that ending statement, and the negativity of every one of your posts is incredibly humorous. It’s stand-up comic worthy

They aren't all like this, but this is a possession from the Final Four a couple of years ago. Every one of those guys can shoot the three (except number 4), but they pass up multiple shots to get a better one and the ball doesn't stop moving.

And here is a shot chart during the 18-19 season, which is pretty typical of what we've seen over the last several years... hardly anything in that mid range area... lots of good shooters shooting 3s and shots around the basket.

Wow, now that’s a chart. 53% of shots at the rim, 44% of shots from three, and only 3% from mid-range. Taking less than one mid-range shot a game.  No wonder there offensive efficiency is through the roof.

I’d be curious to see how that compares to ‘Bama or our ranked Bulls team.

  8. Ultimately, there seems to be very little correlation between tempo and winning.

7 out of 16 teams remaining in the tourney are at the bottom half of tempo nationally. While offensive efficiency, something McCollum’s teams excelled at, is highly correlated.

I’d definitely enjoy watching uptempo teams but as others stated above, I’d prefer to win above all else.

  9. Welp, this game kind of went how I thought it would. Was hoping we’d play them close but didn’t really believe we would.

I’ve been really impressed with how hard Blocker has played tonight. Hasn’t given up on a single possession despite being down 30. Hope he gets more opportunities next year.

This season went exactly how most of us expected, looking back at the preseason poll thread. And went exactly how the MAC preseason poll expected it would. So I’m not shocked by the first round loss. But you hope that a team outperforms expectations.

I think the most shocking thing this year was the disparity between the top 3 teams and everyone else. I anticipated this team would at least be able to hang around with those teams. I was wrong.

Our best win was the first game of the year against a good Colgate team. That was our ceiling. And unfortunately for us, Toledo, Kent, and Akron are better than that ceiling.

I always thought this would be the year to properly evaluate Whitesell. Essentially no stragglers from Oats. My evaluation, his tenure has been mediocre. Not terrible but never exceeded expectations. Because of that, while I wasn’t for his firing prior to this season, I think it’s time for him to go.

I think we as a fan base have tasted higher heights and want to get back there. And I just don’t think he’s the man to do it unfortunately.

I’m excited to see what next happens next. Should be interesting!

Toledo looked every bit like a 1 seed today.

They made it look easy scoring 90

Ball State showing exactly why we had to be the 5 seed in this tournament.

Ohio is underrated. They can beat anyone in the MAC. I wouldn’t be shocked if they upset Toledo

Neither have I there back to being irrelevant just another women’s Big 4 basketball program playing out the games yearly on the UB Bulls women’s basketball schedule. Let me know when Becky Burke either figures it out or is fired. But no I am not wasting my time watching another mediocre Western New York basketball program. I already have four men’s basketball programs that are mediocre and irrelevant this season. Last game of the Big 4 basketball season tomorrow with UB Bulls loss to the Akron Zips. BSF the UB Bulls men haven’t played yet? No chance against the Akron Zips tomorrow we mind as will forfeit this game and all of next season as long as Jim Whitesell is the head UB Bulls basketball coach we have no chance at NCAA’s tournament championship bid in my opinion. UB Horns Up! Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo

Back to irrelevancy? They’re a team that returned one player from last year, and had six players who consistently played?

They won their last 3 games to make the tournament and played Toledo, a team on the brink of being in the top 25, and a potential at large bid, to one point in OT. There is no shame in losing today. Especially with how well they performed.

In addition, they have a good recruiting class coming in.

While I’m not thrilled about the trajectory of the men’s team, and I do agree that it’s time for Whitesell to go, I think Burke has shown her ability to get an undermanned team to play above expectations. They will be at the top of the MAC while she’s here. That I’m confident of.
