Well if he's an all league player next year, how many on here will continue to defend this 3 win leader? This guy can play. Plain and simple. So could Sy. Those guys were/are good. They were not put in a position to be successful this past season due to things that were out of their control. They were playing on a team that was losing to Robert's Wesleyan until a couple minutes left in the game. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever witnessed as a UB fan, alumnus, former athlete and reasonably knowledgeable person when it comes to sports. It was indefensible  if you actually watched the 40 minutes of that game live.

Nate Oats ends the speculation by tweeting that he's staying at Alabama. Good for him!

No big shock there. He is better off where he is. Making a fortune and can be a legend if they get a championship while he's there. He's made Bama into a basketball school and not just football anymore. Especially with Saban gone, he's the big man on campus unless the new football coach can do what Saban did.

This is nothing more than speculation, but I do believe we should go after this mass Canisius exodus hard. (There already was some discourse on Staveskie and Long) From my understanding, Calvin Cage was a very well liked assistant coach at Canisius and recruited many of those players to Canisius. Pretty much every player in their rotation is in the portal currently, and even thought it may hurt our pride, Canisius’s team last season would beat our team by 30 and we need to jump on a chance to grab some of those pieces and insert a proven D1 presence into our lineup. As much as people on here would like to complain, I would 100% take proven MAAC basketball players (we would probably finish worse in the MAAC anyways) over freshman with no D1 offers which is GH3’s current strategy

Oh I'm sure that they'd be an improvement,  but my point still remains, that we've fallen quite a long way to be picking up Canisius' bones. We'll see if any of those guys go back with a proven coach in Christian now at the helm.

Are people really upset that a basketball player who only had scholarship offers from Albany and Fairfield and decided to walk on at Arkansas State and was not recruited by UB?

Is that the level of recruit that people want?

We did just watch a season where the team won 3 games and were blown out in most others. Which blue blood schools offered the guys that were recently signed? While the point is not completely off base, the all time scorer here should be more than capable of getting a look from the supposed top school in the area. Much like Khalil Mack's brother not originally being offered by UB (before receiving big time backlash), it's not a super wise decision.

No denying he is an absolute savage on the recruiting side. The big question was whether he could actually coach and it appears that that question was answered right out of the gate in season 1. I’m never getting over the decision to pass on Hodgson.

I'm just not sure how we as a 3 win team last year don't even try to recruit the all time scorer from wny. The previous #1 was Welch, who had a very solid 5 year career.

I mentioned in a recruiting thread how the Bulls should start to build a local recruiting pipeline. Hodgson just grabbed the All Time Western New York scoring leader Jaiden Harrison from Bishop Timon as a preferred walk-on

Wow. Did we have any walk ons last year? Nate loved a deep bench. Bryan clearly is buying into that too.

I have heard similar sentiments. I believe one of the quotes was that a "weight was lifted".

UB not only had that weight lifted, but got paid to remove an anchor. Best possible option for UB, in my view. The team was a mess the past few years. Sadly, It was evident to anyone with eyes and even a rudimentary understanding of football.

I think the talk of what blue blood is gonna poach Nate Oats is going to be put to rest. Alabama is gonna do whatever it takes to keep him around.

He's not going anywhere. He just signed for close to $6mil per year, top 5 paid coach in the country. He's made Alabama basketball the best game in town, and that includes football!

    What’s the path forward?

More than 3 wins and getting blown out by double digits in less than half of the games. I have no idea how this roster is more talented than the previous one, but then again this past year's roster had far more talent than their final W-L record. Maybe this roster will play as a unit and double their win total and cut down on the double digit losses, but at least on paper, it appears to be very young and not filled with much high end talent (at least according to recruiting services, whatever they are worth). The good teams in the league have men on their team, much as we used to. Who does this roster have that can remotely compare to being a "man" like a Dontay, Davonte, Nick? Not a single one, as far as I can tell. Heck, where's an Armoni Foster/Jerrod Oldham? Even a Zid? Heck, from what I can tell, the much destroyed on this board Gabe Grant would be a star in comparison to what this group appears to have. I hope these guys are good players, but it's a super young roster and based on recent history, by the time they are ready to be at a strong productive level (if they get there), they'll be at their 2nd or 3rd school.

No, when Graham was granted the ability to play this season, basically the court ruling said there can't be transfer sit-outs anymore so anyone can go anywhere, anytime regardless of previous transfers or what year you are in. It's currently the wild west. Maybe it will change, but it will be a court ruling and I'm sure everyone already in the portal will be protected.

As I've said in an earlier post, the whole system is a joke. "Student athlete" should be removed for this nonsense.  If you're at a new school every year, how many of the classes/credits go with them (especially year after year)? Not all schools accept classes from other schools. Maybe there is some sort of wink and nod by the ncaa to allow all of the classes to transfer, but this is nothing more than a complete farce at this point.

I like how the team is being built with freshman from the ground up, put in the tough time the first couple seasons and reap the benefits of it later. Making team management easier down the line

If the players stay for 4 years, they'll be in the minority of most players in the ncaa of recent history. Most players are at 2-3 by the time their time is up. I would love to know the statistic in D1 basketball of those players who exhausted their eligibility this season. What % were at only 1 school, versus 2, 3+? I'd wager that the "1 school" is less than 20% and "3+" is equal or more than the "1". If that is the case, it's an utter joke of a system.

  12. Great season. Kent just got hot in the 2nd half. They've been a tough match up for us all season. Great to see the progress the team made from game 1 til the end. That's on the coach/staff, kudos to them. I wish 2 teams did that, but we all saw what we saw. Fingers crossed for next year,  since it starts now. Hopefully this womens roster will remain here and add a few pieces. Replacing #1 is a tall task, she was incredible, a leader in every sense. The men need someone like that. Without a leader, it's just spinning wheels.

  13. In watching the highlight video, it's funny looking at the gyms. They'd never fly in NYS with the wall so close to the baseline without padded walls. Every AD would be crying when the lawsuits rolled in when little Bobby got hurt against the hard wall.

Interesting to watch. We'll see how he translates over here. None of the (very brief) highlights that I saw looked like a gauntlet of opposition, but he has a nice frame and moves pretty smooth. Reminds me more of a young X. It took X a few years to come into his own, so we'll see if he is similar or a unicorn.

Truthfully fellas, I'm not particularly optimistic.

I understand that in this transfer portal era it's entirely possible that the team has 10 new players next year, but the sad fact remains that this team was not competitive for the vast majority of the season.  They lost 20 games by double-digits, including 13 (!) conference losses.  They had no semblance of a cohesive coaching/gameplan scheme.

Coach will get a second season and I accept that, but the entire staff should be on the hot seat as of the beginning of training camp.  I haven't figured out my benchmark yet for next season.  I want to say .500 overall and .500 in the MAC, but this team was not remotely close to either of those benchmarks this season.....and let's be honest, those aren't exactly lofty goals to begin with.

If they go .500 overall and .500 in the mac, gh3 should be coach of the year. Good luck with that. I'd love for someone to set betting lines on that one. I'm not a better, but I can imagine what those odds would have to be.

No hand shake between Burke and the Ball state coach and she never even looked his way as there appears to be still bad blood between them from last years game.

I noticed the same before the game, although after the game they shook and were amicable (unlike last year).
