Waiting patiently for an attorney's opinion on this. lol

... Do they wanna put the effort off the court ...
Good summary. Shouldn't just get money. Gotta provide value. Trouble is, how to quantify the amount of effort applied, and what that is worth. Ideally I'd like to see some return of value to the school. That is even harder to quantify.

... It's not just about NIL and collectives ...
I liked NIL, because I thought a local business would grow a relationship between the community and the school. (Player X represents local company Y... Support the local school!). Collectives don't sit well with me though. Feels more like here's a bag of money. Nothing earned, and nothing gained (from the community perspective)

Now I'm nervous that freshmen aren't ready, and leaning slightly back toward rentals.
EDIT, after Dooley's reply: I didn't mean 100% rentals, but that they should make up a percentage of the overall class.

Well then let me ask you, what is your expectation for next season?
Haha, guess I walked in to that one, huh? I have nearly zero expectations for next year (not to be confused with my desires). I want to build for the future. Being reminded of how recent first year players did was ugly. I won't be happy if they don't make the playoffs. I guess I feel rentals are useful for more than just wins. Even if wins don't come, he right ones can also help build culture for future years.

I just looked at the roster. Smith had no offensive game and is a junkyard dog style role player. Chatman didn’t play last season. Williamson barely played and was already redshirted. Jones barely played. And Adams could be our leading man going into next season. Aside from him I don’t think anyone is penciled in as a starter. I think it’s wide open.
Now I'm nervous that freshmen aren't ready, and leaning slightly back toward rentals.

Using money ball example, everyone thought Billy Beane was a bona fide hall of famer....didnt happen.
Rec'd for continuing the reference. Can anyone else find similarities between UB and the movie?

One of WMU's (as a school) top donors has a son that played soccer for UB. He has a net worth of multiple billions.
Frustrating.
woah, that's horrible.
a) which player?
b) how do you find top donors?

Dooley and Doc both make great points, in my opinion. Personally I think I'm in the middle. I hadn't thought that a rental would disrupt team chemistry, but now agree that it certainly could. While Whitesell didn't have luck going that route, Oats did... so it helps to be reminded that every situation is different. Since I recently re-watched Moneyball, I'm thinking of the scene where the GM confronts David Justice about his role on the team. Translating back to UB, I feel that some rentals can be recruited with the understanding that nothing is guaranteed, and they need to win the job.

Unfortunately, because the old forum was on a very old technology, I can no longer run that archived message board.
Thanks for trying, it’s appreciated!

… I guess once the summer workouts start more news from the team will come. …
Since this is your first season as an active user of this site, I’ll warn that you might need to temper your expectations of “more””. Maybe you lurked around before joining and already know how “much” news we usually get. I imagine it isn’t the same amount as with teams in the Research Triangle.

Agreed, but I know you know she can't control other's twitter... Might not be awesome, but honestly out of her control.

With several scholarships still open, it is too early to compare coaching philosophies. Getting high schoolers now doesn’t mean not valuing transfers. Get them later ?!!

For the record, I am aligned with you. I am 100% focused on Halcovage's and UB's results, rooting for them to play well.
Completely understand. Didn’t intend to single anyone out. Just sharing a general comment.

Bryan who? That ship sailed, time to move on. Benchmark maybe, but doing so involves sorting out many other variables that I’m not Interested in evaluating.

Duh.
There are still extra scholarships in this class, that we don’t know how many recruits are actually being pursued.- 1

Pretty standard...
Sure, I understand that... guess I was just reiterating my thought that it is a small pool. It is difficult to manage five salaries with this amount.

Hopefully these get re-negotiated over time
How would that work though? HC gets 5 yr contract, including staff allowance. All 5 probably want a raise after year one, but the pool stays the same. The only way to promote someone, is to cut someone else off below the knee.
Admittedly, the split I posted was based on no research of former staff salaries. I have no idea of their individual responsibilities. All of their salaries seem low to me. I have no idea how accurate it is, just spitballing.
