  1. Neither Dontay or Jordan were recruited as defenders.  They became them. They learned those skills and got that tenacity practicing on the hardwood at Alumni, knowing if they wanted to play here, you had to defend here.  The culture is still here.  I can see several players taking on the role.

Am I missing something but doesnt the season usually start the first week of November? And isnt the hall of fame in Massachusetts?

But that sounds like a really cool event to be apart of. Not to mention being able to recruit and just have the schools name out and about in Toronto.

It’s spelled oot and aboot there.  Learn the lingo.

I actually looked at this yesterday, since 2008 only 4.3% of participants have been drafted. On average those players are mid second round picks (43.667). I also see very little correlation between production per minute in the tournament and odds of getting drafted. So I'd say this has a mostly negligible effect on anyone's draft stock.

I was actually gonna say 1 in 20 but didn’t want to come off even more negative then necessary.

Very unethical of him to give high school kids more (and better) options. The ethical thing to do would be to force them to go to our school.

Ugh.  Better basketball conference, sure.  But worse school.  Alabama is almost as close to a diploma mill as ASU.  So, no, they are not doing any non NBA talent really any favors by recruiting them to a worse school.  Maybe I’m old fashioned.

Thorpe is an uninspiring hire. Hope I'm proven wrong but UMKC just isn't the level I want to be cross-pollinating our program with. Although I do like the Chicago roots a lot. Hopefully Agee and T. Williams are still in play.

Our previous HC was 2 years removed from teaching high school math and cross-pollinating with UMKC worries you?  Give me people who work hard and inspire those around them to do the same.  Don’t care what the source of your prior checks.

Actually, I disagree 100%.  I read the article and it is a lesson in how to package the events of the past week or two and place them into what was a "plan".  It is exactly what you would expect (and what I mentioned would happen).  It is the logical result of the situation that has occurred.

My life's experience has demonstrated to me that people in administrative positions are able to become somewhat of revisionist historians...blending what has actually occurred into their "plan all along".  It is a defense mechanism and one that helps you keep your job.  I am not young.  It has been almost 30 years since I've graduated, so I have seen my fair share of how organizations work.  Alnutt's quotes from TBN article sound like the story you tell after the fact to make the events seem like they were all part of the plan.  Of course, the two facts are:  (1)  The interim coach, ten days on, becomes the head coach, while there is immediate precedence for making a quicker decision w/o a search and (2) all of the recruits opened up their commitment.   Those outcomes are process fails and, I suspect, most inside this business (btw, this is me speculating, but this is a message board) would tend to agree with my conclusion.

His quote about UCLA is a distraction...the one straw man you can knock down ("see...look at what this other school is doing...we are not that bad...it is even UCLA").

So...if you want to believe that the article "put to bed all the rumors that have been circulating"...fine.  They were writing that article for you.

Also...while the involvement of the players are great, the comments that they made are the kind of comments that Guy Fieri makes when he is eating something at a diner that is only okay...he has to come up with a generic comment that doesn't say it is good ("man...you can really taste the peppers", "I have never had a burrito like this before", "cheese...on Chinese food...you've blown my mind".)   Look at Graves' comment:

"I told him that I'm comfortable with how (Whitesell) coaches", said Graves.    That is not what I would call a ringing endorsement at all. And Graves is to be your "star" player next year.

Even the quotes of others are that he's a nice guy, a great man, has experienced, is committed to Buffalo, etc.  I don't read that he is "a great basketball mind", "a master motivator", " a fantastic game planner", "gets the most out of his players", etc.

Those are my thoughts.  I will move on now from this topic and hope he can get some of the previous commits to stay.  Sure...there is always going to be guys available to fill scholarships, but we've had many of them in the lean years...and they are MAC bench players (who are sometimes stretched into starting roles).  The last several years, we really haven't had that.  Our bench has been so deep and overwhelmed the other teams.  We will certainly take a step back this year.  Whether it is to being a #3 seed instead of a #1 seed or are we back to mediocrity?  Time will tell.  The next week or two will go a long way towards determining where it may end up.

    As always, Go Bulls.

Posts like this give me guilt.  Someone passionate about UB took a measurable amount of time out of their day to write this.  And it’s too long for me to read....

Ask him if he can get St. Johns to play UB in the Garden (since he used to coach at St. Johns) and for us to get a return game at alumni. We should play them and Cuse every year. Just ask about scheduling at a high level overall in non-conference.

Just stop.  Power conference schools don’t play road games.  Not happening.  Ask about AAC, OVC, A10 and MVC.  Home and homes  that could actually happen.  Keep the brand and get into good neutral court preseason tournies.

I don’t know that we will ever see again a player as productive as McCrea when he got going, but there always seemed to be a negative correlation between how many points he scored and whether we won or lost. Massinburg carries the team multiple times especially late game. He’s my vote.

Sorry you missed the TT game.  CJ was overmatched and apparently he never realized it.

    While this idea sounds awesome.

Why can't the women just have an awesome coach?

The media and PR would be priceless. All the PR about hiring the best person for the job regardless of sex would be great. But she still would be leaving the women's team behind for men.

If it were to happen I think she would be able to pull in a few 4 stars just because. The camera would be on her and her players.

She would still be in the building.  Probably the best we could hope for at this point.

  10. She has shown she can recruit.  And I kinda expressed why I think she could recruit men.  What brings high major talent to midmajor schools?  A chance at media attention and playing time.  She can provide both.  Outside of tenn using a woman’s coach for 1 game, Jack would be the first.  media would eat it up.  But it wouldn’t be a side show.  She is legit.  Can you think of a better motivator of young people?  We brought in a D3 football coach and a high school bb coach to be our AHC and promoted him, is a women that crazy?

  11. Keep coach Jack.

    make her the Men’s coach.

recruits want media coverage, she will provide that. She will be able to recruit.

she is an even better basketball coach than Oats.

    she is awesome.

and salary will be enough to keep her here.  There is only a couple women’s programs that compete.  Pay her 600k to start and we have our Mark Few.
