I want to add that Hodgson immediately following Oats the way he did, riding coattails if you would, kinda lost some respect there... didn’t even try and fight for a job maybe he felt like he deserved. And now if we wanted to give him the job, we can’t.

Can everyone start using Hodge, the BH keeps tripping me up.

If we could land Stephens, I’d suddenly be happy Oats left. That is an upgrade.

Genuine question. What does UB need to do to be able to eventually be one of those big money schools? Like how do they actually become able to pay coaches 3+ million a year?
Go back in time an build athletics when in our reality UB was cutting them. We showed up at the train station and our ticket was for a coal powered steam engine.

We will be ok because the conference we reside in. When push comes to shove, even the most plainly adequate coach can out recruit the rest of the MAC. Best education, best/biggest city. Best media attention (sadly), UB basketball both men’s and women’s is the premier destination for MAC level talent.

When filling out my bracket, I thought if we could get by TT, we’d have a much easier time with Michigan.

sorry my sarcasm didn't come thru. I believe he's academically eligible. Could he stay eligible? on the men's side (bottom 10% GPA in the NCAA Tournament)? Yes, on the women's side (top 10% GPA in the NCAA Tournament)? No! If he's in WNY his mom will keep on top of him about grades as will his aunt!. I'm certain of that.
I like how you used the all sports measure and not their ranking in men’s b-ball. So your telling me our basketball teams gpa is lower than NYU’s fencing team? You don’t say!

As another fan on this site said: This is business and you can not or do not want to understand!!!! I do understand and will refuse to be part of it. Honesty, accountability and responsibility are what was instilled in my family from early age and believe it to this day. For many the motto is: the ends justify the means???????
By posting on this board, you are a part of it. Reality bites.

What does any of this have to do with my point. You blamed Alnutt for signing Oats to an extension, which is crazy. You feel betrayed? Fine. That’s your prerogative. But don’t blame the AD for doing what he could given the circumstances

Bama fan here. I was searching for perspective from UB fans on Oats and found this board. I saw some comments up the board about Bama fans' expectations. Honestly, I think most of our folks just want to be relevant enough to be in the tournament more years than not and play a fun brand of basketball. We aren't expecting national titles or Final Fours. We wouldn't turn those things down, either, but if we make the tournament and play hard, that's the goal.
Our last two coaches, Anthony Grant and Avery Johnson, played really slow, sloppy brands of basketball. I am envious when I watch games like Purdue/UT last night, Duke/UCF, and your Buffalo teams, who move the ball well, take care of the ball, and score efficiently. We have been the polar opposite - our team generally consists of a bunch of really great athletes playing rag-tag ball and generally not giving much effort. That's one of the main reasons we are excited about having Coach Oats. He is the opposite of everything we have come to expect in a good way.
You guys have a hell of a program and, in the eyes of most basketball savvy fans around the country, are becoming a program in the mold of Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita, etc. where you've built it to a point that people expect you to keep doing well even if you lose coaches.
Would love any perspective on Nate Oats. We will absolutely be pulling for you guys from now on and perhaps we can get a home and home scheduled or find a way to match up in a pre-conference tournament.
My perspective on Oats, very good motivator. The players like him and they play for him. He has had the luck to land in a situation where UB has just been much more athletic and talented then his opponents so his coaching credentials have not been overly tested. We will see now. His record vs NCAA teams this past season, 2-2. Not bad but we did have 5 seniors. Last year, 1-5. And still that one win is what he is known for. I wish him well, but I don’t see him a game changer at the SEC.

Any new HC has to embrace the style of play that is now UB basketball. Get in their shorts, don’t be afraid to shoot, and share the basketball. The culture is larger than any man. That we can’t lose.

On that note: Wjhen you talk about a quality coach. What kind of coach would all the big name coaches in all the major schools like Duke, Va, kentucky just to name a few if they were at Niagara, Canisius and even some of the MAC school?? The way they are talked about like the greatest thing since sliced bread. If they could not attract the best players in the nation do you think they would win all their games???? I am tired of putting all these high profile people on this pedestal. I feel really bad for Calipari because he has to deal with all the best freshmen in the country. Stop with the nonsense.
I read this 3 times and I’m no closer to understanding what the point is or .... never mind.

step off the ledge everyone. I never thought Oats was staying put after this year. The contract extension was a kindness, basically paying for a year of a new HC. UB has been able to recruit better then the vast majority of the MAC for a decade now, minus Dambrot and his King James connections. And he is gone now. We will be OK. Probably better than Bama. And Oats will be OK with that.

Avery Johnson? Coach swap?

Sorry. I won't post ever again. My bad. It was okay that the other guy talked about the schedule not being good enough time and time again, or for the constant criticism of a 32 win team, but not okay when I call them out on it.
It isn’t that. Just the presumption that UB is not trying to get teams to come here. Do you think we are turning down the best possible opponents for home games? For what? To protect our home winning streak? That is just silly. Sure, there maybe a dollar sign that could bring in a blue blood to UB. We could maybe afford it if that is our only OOC home game....
-
Why is LSU even in the tournament? What if they win it all? No champ this year? And does their wins mean the NCAA credits are more valuable? Or does the SEC still get them? If it’s the former, I’m okay with it.
-
I played the drinking game, every time Oats makes an excuse for ASU and Hurley. Now I’m paying for an UBER. Wtf?
-
Shouldn’t UB just put a spy inside Liberty U. Clearly they have unlimited money for recruiting and have to look under every rock. Let them do the work and just swoop in at the end and take the player. Worked with K Mack. We could save some major $$$ on recruiting. No one actually wants to get a diploma from a school that teaches the earth is 6K years old.
-
It is a strange way to give 2 of the worst conferences in the country 2 tourney credits every year. $$$ good for them. Probably a decent percentage of their revenue.
-
Plus the university would probably pay to have an indoor track wrapped around the floor at HSBC first.
sorry, Key Bank. I dated myself

This whole year has been fun to watch. Almost all year in top 25, MAC Championship, UB on the map who would have thought this. Go Bulls
Not trying to nitpick on a message board comment, just making a point, but is UNLV on your map? These moments can be fleeting. UB is penciled in. In time that can be erased. Time is now to use your marker (wallet, pocketbook).

Transfer Speculation

I suppose the only solution to avoiding the transfer and loss of recruits when a coach moves along is a heavily involved AD, but they have enough on their plate already. And other sports not to mention the BB HC would probably not enjoy that level of meddling.
