I assume it would look poorly on Alabama

Your lead recruiter coaching a different school

Hodgson will definitely become a head coach, most likely pretty soon.

The way he handled oats leaving and going for the head job here showed he wasn't ready to be a head coach. I hope he learned from it because who knows he might end up back here one day

I also hope mark alnutt holds no hard feelings towards him. Hodgson handled the situation like a young inexperienced guy, as long as he learned from it I have no issue

The people at Alabama know that if it wasn’t for they guys on BCU that Oats et al would not be there and understand the deep connection they still have to these amazing hoopers and players. They get it.

He handled the situation poorly for sure, he's a young coach and sometimes they haven't figured it all out. I know he's a fantastic recruiter and seems to really be able to build connections, but I have no idea of his coaching abilities in practice or in-game, he may be great, may be awful. He's not even coaching this particular team, which is significantly different that a D1 college team. I relate it to football, some guys are just really good coordinators, but are terrible head coaches, nothing wrong with that, just a fact. I'm in construction and we have business development guys that are great at getting work and building relationships, but I would never want them on a jobsite. There are many different skill sets and they don't always translate to being a top notch head coach.

Should Coach Hodgson get a shot at some point? Absolutely. Is Nate Oats the exception or the rule for how you should select a head coach, an exception for sure. The thing Oats had going for him is that he coached a high level high school team (probably on par with D3 teams), so he had that and had won championships. That's a very good starting point. Recruiting is an important element, but coaching that talent and getting them to gel is another thing.

Personally, I'm not ready to turn the UB reigns over to him today. I assume others would disagree.

Anyone who knew anything about the Hurley years knew Oats was the only and clear cut no brainer choice. That was based on his proven ability and acumen demonstrated before Hurley left.

Another opinion not based on fact. Appearances may have suggested such, but There is always more to the story.

Hodgson burned a bridge.  I don't see it happening if ADMA is still in town.

How so? I suspect this is speculation. I do agree Alnut wouldn’t hire him. But that won’t be an obstacle because he’ll leave first chance he gets IMO.

I seem to recall the way BH not conducting himself in the most sincere or professional way. He was already sporting 'Bama wear while essentially blackmailing ADMA.

Anyway, that's spilled milk under the bridge. Here's the link to the press conference with Coach Mo at 11 am Monday:

Just found the time to watch. For anyone who hasn't I'd recommend taking 35-40 minutes to do so. It starts somewhere around the 15-16 minute mark.

Hell, I'm ready to put the pads on and go play for Coach. He strikes me as a decent, kind, considerate man and most of all a player's coach who has success written all over him. Which likely explains the outpouring of support from the alums who knew him so well. I would be surprised if UB's recruiting doesn't take a big leap forward under the new staff. Of course, it remains to be seen what type of game day coach he'll be, but I am confident he'll do a good job.

Thanks for posting this. I gonna listen later when I have 10 minutes or so.

The 4 from before are still shown along with Coach Mo. Rob Ianello is now listed as WIDE RECIEVERS/RECRUITING COORDINATOR. Might not be bad to keep him if we can.

Totally agree. However, his salary is likely a fair bit higher than UB can offer.

Yes, I figured as much. Giving the head job to someone whose only d1 experience was a couple of years as the recruiter (yes, a very good one) would be unlikely.

Woulda been a leap of faith. Indeed one most ADs would not take. But the best ones know when and when not to go against the grain. In this case we’ll never know. I played for a coach who was a great recruiter, but not a great coach. We did great winning our conference championship four years in a row, but likely not quite as well as we should have. If you have the horses easier to do well than without especially in hoops. Regardless looking forward to UB football and hoops later this year. Go Bulls!

I think JQ is fantastic but I don't know that he would've been considered over JW, same for BH.

Clearly not. It was a reference to Hodgson. Hard to know who was the better coach, but Hodgson clearly was responsible for bringing more recruits to UB.

Why does it matter what they were ranked? They produced on the field. Should matter a lot more than recruiting rankings.

It would be nice to get highly rated recruits and see them overachieve. Hopefully given our new coach’s pedigree we’ll see that happen.

  11. I am no fan of Alnut, but I give him an A+ on this hire. The search was conducted efficiently, quickly (just what was required given LL’s late departure) and hopefully time will bare this out. I suspect those in the portal will return given the quality of the hire. I see Licata, Mack, JP and many other great UB alums are all in on this hire which should help with keeping players in the fold.   Go Bulls!

  12. I too hate the timing. But I partially blame the decision makers who unfortunately never shared Danny Whites vision for UB sports. Danny unquestionably put us on an upward trajectory even if he rubbed some people the wrong way. Oats was trying to push the White’ vision but a few decision makers slow walked that so it became clear to Oats which Ed to his bolting. Unless and until the White’ vision is embraced and a commitment made to pursue excellence on and off the field we’ll continue to see successful UB coaches bolt f ok r better financial opportunities.

In the meantime let’s hope Coach Jack sticks around.

  13. One of our colleagues posted the link to UB giving day in the excellence fund thread above. If you want UB hoops to succeed and help that mission move forward go to the link and donate. To those who are more well to do give generously. Those less so or just starting their careers give 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 bucks. Every buck helps.

Bertram will be back for year 6.

He’s a very good team player. You can never have enough of those. And who knows maybe his sixth year will be the charm. I don’t remember the kids name, but I think it was Akron that had a big stiff in their roster for several years who was awkward and contributed little but his last year he became a real quality big man and a big contributor to their success.

He was really special. I’m not sure if we anyone realized until we saw him playing but he was a hell of a recruit with an instant impact

Jeremy was so versatile. He did so much for the team. Interestingly he struggled in November and much of December  in his first year here and then boy oh boy he was just lit. What a special player on an even more special team.

Love this take, we are still a top 100 team in the nation. There are over 1000 names in the portal and we are out there looking. I say let’s be patient and start to judge when we hit the court next season. Let’s remember that CJ only held one offer and turned into one of UB’s best players. We could find a diamond in the rough somewhere

Hope springs eternal. Let’s go! Get ‘ER done and give us all reason to dance in the streets.
