2 years ago they had open spots at this time (5 of them) and brought in Mballa,  Hardnett and Skogman. If we can see that type of trio (hopefully including a guard or two) we should be pleased.

That’s not necessarily a good example. UB coming off historic season finishing #16 in the country. As you know and we’ve discussed good will and positive momentum hard to build but easily lost. Hopefully your best case scenario happens. I’ll be thrilled if it does.

We still have several open roster spots (as do others). Can't we just wait until the rosters are filled before anointing anyone as king yet? What if we sign another Mballa (or similar damage maker at guard)? Who really knows what will happen? As of this moment,  of course Ohio appears to be the favorite,  since they won in Cleveland and return most of the squad and a strong addition. The preseason favorite in this league doesn't always come out on top anyhow.

They're not the early 90s UNLV squad or this year's Gonzaga (or even 2019 Buffalo for that matter).

Love your ongoing positivity. Giving Jim the benefit of the doubt is the right take. But it wasn’t so long ago we dealt with Reggie ball and recruiting. I have absolutely no idea how recruiting will turn out. I hope for the best. And I fear the worst which is the Reggie recruiting record of having open spots this time of year and not being able to find top MAC level talent.

Eh if anything maybe he leaves Ohio (yes I know it’s his Alma mater) sooner. I actually like that they are the hunted. Keep us motivated and something to shoot for.

I like it the other way. Sustained excellence while other teams putting their best at you each and every night.  I think Boals is there for at least two more and as some friends I know from Ohio they think he’ll likely stay longer.

Lets wait until they’re in the top 25, not a 5 seed in the MAC who gets hot in the tournament

They’ve got to be, at least on paper, head and shoulders above the rest. Of course that’s on paper so point well taken. But his success thus far is reminiscent of Oats’ trajectory. Beware.

This is why recruiting news is so dangerous. We hear about someone, see a few clips, their best moments (none of their bonehead moments) then we get disappointed we don't sign someone that may not have ended up great for us anyway. We all clamor for news, they get disappointed we don't sign all 30 people we offer. I say I wish the kid well and I'll focus my attention on the next option. I'm honestly more intrigued with Cone and the connection with his brother.

If this guy was a target, then this is bad news. If not, and it was just a flyer on a kid who had some potential then no biggie. We’re into April so it’s time to start landing a recruit and get some momentum going.

I think no news is good news regarding that. Especially as teams drop out the big dance and begin their recruiting. We are never out the woods but no news is good news. Whereas no news regarding potential recruits is bad news.

    Certainly agree with both statements.

This year is the perfect year to bring in at least 2 freshmen. By the time Williams, Mballa, Segu graduate, the incoming frosh  will be sophomores. With a year under their belt. That’s how you build sustained success. You grow players and  when they become good you have more in house to take their place. Example: CJ and company to Graves, Graves to Williams and Segu. All had talent ahead of them...played some as underclassmen then led the team as upperclassmen. Pass the baton. This is the perfect year to bring in freshman with no pressure on them as we have a group of upperclassmen leading the team. Bringing in a transfer senior won’t solve the issues we will have once Jack, Williams, Mballa, Segu and Brewton all graduate after next season. Gotta get a jump on two years from now...now. If we have 3 scholarships then get 2 freshmen and a transfer. And if we are dipping in the protocol then a solid transfer with 2 or more years eligibility with upside would be great. Recruiting isn’t a one year thing. Gotta look ahead. But in the end just get me some shooters.

In theory sounds great. But if you’re a recruiting guru their really is no best way to do it. Oats did well with both freshman and transfers.

Give me 3 freshman. All with height and length. A 6’2 PG, a 6’4 SG and a nice 6’6 wing. If that’s too much to ask for five guards guards and more guards. As you are seeing in the big dance...guards are running the show. Any combo of a PG/SG/Wing is what we need. Guys that can penetrate, dish and make shots. And specifically freshman bc they can grow over 4 years. With next year being a free year bc they won’t be the leaders. They will be the future core.

    Let’s hope!

I really hope this tournament puts the rest all the disappointment that UB isn’t as good under Whitesell as we were with Oats. He’s out here looking like the only real competition to Gonzaga. If anyone really expected us to maintain that level when he left, they’re delusional. Oats is too good for a mid major. We were lucky we had him when we did.

Oats had a plan to emulate Gonzaga, he had ideas on what was necessary to achieve that, had discussions with AD et. al.,  and I can tell you that it was given lip service and never taken seriously by those who needed to get behind it. Total fail by a tiny group of people.

It was love at first sight. He had such an old school game. His pull ups are what I wish Rondo could master. Am I crazy if I consider Clark the second best PG in school history?

Wes could go all the way to the hoop when warranted, nail 3 balls and distribute the ball in an unselfish manner. He also broke pressure without difficulty. His game is what I wanted to see Jayvon develop some, but regrettably never materialized. Segu has the pull up but has yet to master it. I agree with you on #2. And if he played longer than he did likely would be #1 on that list. And I absolutely love Turner!

Oats also recruited JUCOs with more than a year of eligibility. Really the only guy Oats brought in for a short period of time was Wes Clark. And god he was great.

Clark was awesome wasn’t he? Too bad he didn’t play an entire year or better yet come here much sooner. I loved his pull up jumpers.

  12. Ohio had a great run. They had a tough time guarding in the first half especially in the first half. Creighton moved the ball quickly around the horn with sharp crisp passes, excellent shooting and timely dribble drives. But to their credit Ohio fought to the bitter end never giving up. Kudos to them. I’m not sure who they have coming back next year but if most of their core returns they’ll be a tough tram to beat.

Bottom line is we were all spoiled by the Hurley/Oats eras. In reaching those heights it diminished what Reggie did for the program. In reaching those heights we expect more from Whitesell. Especially since he’s doing it with mostly Oats’s players. In reaching those heights we all fear that after next season we will return to the Reggie days...which now look like crap because we’ve seen what the view from the mountain top looks like. Next season expectations are still high. After that we will all need patience and understanding

This university should always expect to reach the level of success brought by Oats and to a lesser extent Hurley. I thought UB was capable and had potential to be exactly as it was during the Oats/Hurley years going back 30+ years. Unfortunately the powers that be with the exception of the White eta always took the view we cannot do this or that. To which I retort, dammit yes you can! As with anything in life you first must believe then set goals and pursue them without hesitation or doubt. If you fail you’ll still fare better than those who do not have can do or we can’t do this or that attitudes. At least that’s what I’ve always experienced throughout my existence. And everyone here should demand that excellence over mediocrity always be pursued at UB.

Oh I was talking about montell, and the seniors who graduated when oats left. Felt like it would’ve been wrong to leave him out since technically he was a starter and had some big moments for us

Gotcha. I see McRea and I think if Javon naturally. Montell did a great job for us.

There are legitimate concerns. The problem is that when everything is a concern for you and everything is terrible all the time well it kind of loses its impact. As for Jesef’s post that you quoted, I agree. We need to be better at home next season. I think that we will once fans are back in the seats, along with having a very strong roster packed with seniors. I’ll never understand people who choose to be so negative, especially with an amateur sport where KIDS come and play for the university, giving their all for free. As for the paid staff, time will tell if Whitesell was the right hire. So far the sample size is 2 years. 1) where we lost 4 starting seniors and our best 6th man in history, along with the entire recruiting class when Oats left, and 2) the year of covid where the season was a disjointed mess from the start and we still got to the MAC championship and a birth in the NIT. Am I disappointed we lost our final 2 games? Of course. But I’m also trying to be objective and rational about the situation. To expect the team to magically carry on the success of oats after losing Massinburg Harris Perkins Carothers and McCrae is not realistic. If you think that it is I don’t know what to tell you. If Whitesell can get a couple high level guards in the off-season everything will be just fine despite all the doom and gloom on this board.

Just a point about McRea. UB went win its first MAC Championship after he graduated. His class was a disappointing one. Aside from him the other four year seniors didn’t improve nearly enough for that class to get anywhere near its potential. Of course I think Hurley royally screwed up that quarterfinal game against EMU. But good points everywhere else.

Why? The Basketball Excellence fund still exists.  The link at the top of the thread is still good.

That was just edited to include blue and white link as the post indicates. The predecessor link to the excellence fund was taken down at some point within that last couple of years.

I'm taking nothing away from them.  They were the better team.  And I said it when Boals got hired there to watch out for them.  Problem for us is they arrived a year too soon.  They will be a problem for years to come unless Boals leaves

They aren’t if you appreciate team basketball. Kudos to them. They win 3 in a row in blow out fashion.

This is a reply to TML

  18. At least for me based on last year and 8-9 games ago I no way expected to see them make the championship game. They exceeded my expectations. I suspect most of us would have taken an appearance and loss in the title game before the season began. So kudos on what by most measures was a fine season. Just a real sour note to go out like a lamb.
