Let’s not dismiss Calhoun now because he didn’t want to come to UB. He’s a solid coach and has done well at a program that’s very difficult to succeed at. Predicting the better job will never come sounds like wishing him a bad future.

Eh he used a phantom UB offer as leverage to get a bigger paycheck at his current school. I’m not rooting for him.

The reasoning was “why would he leave a job for another similar situation at UB when he can wait for something better?”

His contract ended up getting re-worked. Calhoun has also already had success with the portal at YSU which is an awful job.

He would also need to be formally offered the UB job, too. Not just his agent saying that he was offered the job to get more money from YSU.

My prediction is that the better job never comes. We’ll see if I’m right or wrong.

Jerrod Calhoun was rumored to not be interested in the job once he heard about the Bulls NIL situation.

Yeah, Youngstown State is really up there when it comes to NIL collectives, facilities, and budget.

I am not going to sit and let any UB fan talk crap about The Canisius University of Buffalo, New York basketball which is the rumor new roll out name even though it’s not official the name yet until it’s announced by the school. When UB basketball is crap itself right now. It’s better to be a use to be then a never was. I was with the Griffs basketball team as a team manager that is more than some of the fans on this board. So I will take so much but not when UB basketball under Jim Whitesell was crap you can’t fool BSF. I was inside a Division I college basketball program Jim Whitesell was incompetent. And not when I don’t believe UB athletics is ever going to be successful with some of the rot that is in this UB alumni donors base that worries more about New York State politics what they might think who cares which is why I like private schools and businesses over state run. I am about hiring the best candidate to be the UB basketball head coach. I don’t think George Halcovage was the best candidate he was the best candidate that checked some of the medaling UB alumni donors politics boxes along with that would accept the low pay offer which is no way to hire a basketball head coach. Plus the not all in with NIL is out of touch with college basketball reality today. Canisius can go on a run just much as UB so there is that reality to in my opinion. Go Griffs! Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo

Canisius lost about half of its enrollment over the past decade. The school is in a terrible financial situation. The basketball program is in a bad situation as well.

UB has gained enrollment as college enrollment drops nationwide. UB's endowment crossed a billion dollars recently. I can complain about NY politics and bullshit SUNY bureaucracy while still being accurate about UB's future vs the future of the Little 3 as institutions and athletic programs.

Yes the crappy Canisius Golden Griffins basketball team that at least went to the NCAA elite eight round in 1955 and 1956 along with a sweet 16 in 1957 in Division I college basketball.

This is worse than Bonnies fans telling us about the good ol' days when they made the Final Four and won the NIT.

I think UB should close up the basketball programs. We will never be able to replicate the success of CCNY's 1950 run when they won both the NIT and the NCAA tournament. Since then, Bona won the NIT, Syracuse won the NCAA tournament. But unless we can do both in the same season CCNY will always be able to hold that over our heads so let's quit now. We can only fantasize about reaching that level of success.

That Cage number seems low. How bad was his pay down the road? I doubt he took a pay cut to coach at UB.

Manhattan’s job posting for a third assistant a few days ago listed $65k to $70k. The latest data I’ve seen for Canisius, which was before Reggie was hired there, has Manhattan’s HC salary double Barons. It’s likely Cage was making around $50k at Canisius. It’s a rough situation at Canisius.

Looking at last years conference record 7-11 was it due to a lack of ability to match up speed/size wise? I see a mention of a injury so I'm guessing depth was a problem as well?

They played a 6 player rotation much of the second half of the season. Lack of size and depth were huge issues

Nice to see the excitement around Coach G starting to add guys to the roster... 😅

We haven't had this level of drama about a less popular (ie not MBB or Football) since there were burner accounts on Bull Run about a volleyball hire. Let me have my fun in the offseason 😆

That being said, based on what I've seen for the two commitments I'm not too excited yet given that Ohio is adding a ton of top recruits, but recruit rankings aren't necessarily what shines on the court.

Who are we to trust? Random AAU coaches and former players who quit on their team midseason sending ominous messages on twitter? Or perhaps we should look to the person who joined ubfan 36 hours ago and has 8 total posts?

This is a Buffalo fan message board. Absolutely nothing has come out yet in the details that indicates our coach did anything wrong (despite the obvious strange circumstances) so why wouldn't we stand by her at this point and suggest someone else must've done something wrong? It's all hearsay at this point.

I don’t know…it looks pretty awful from a UB fan perspective too.

FLJ leaves, half the team goes in the portal. BB comes in and 90% of the remaining team leaves, is asked to leave, etc. Okay fine, that’s the state of college athletics now, sucks but what can you do.

During the season one coach mysteriously disappears. Then a player leaves the team. Then another assistant leaves. Bulls finish the season running a one deep bench, partially due to an injury, and pull a volleyball player in to add depth.

After the season ends, the DOBO gets promoted to assistant and the one remaining assistant leaves. Things start to look fishy…

The player that left posted on Instagram “Nobody wants to cry in an environment that punishes you for showing emotion.” This is only a few years after we received national attention for Hanna Hall and her positive recovery from mental health issues through UB basketball.

And now the mess of 5 players wanting out of their NLI, their names being scrubbed from the NLI announcement. Of the few remaining players eligible to return, at least 2 are in the portal or left the team.

Players and coaches that have left the team have posted the following messages on social media:

“Players will forget what we taught them but they will never forget how we made them feel.”

    “What goes around comes around…
    #treatpeoplewithkindness”

Any of these by themselves don’t really make it seem too bad, but you combine this with the Ball State handshake incident, the turnover from BB’s old teams, it starts to paint a picture that doesn’t look too good for Burke or how she runs a program. I would love to be told I’m off base and be disproven but with no horse in the race except success of the program, it looks awful right now.

It appears that neither Coach Dozier or Coach Foust have a coaching job now.  Most rosters are filled for next year.

So riddle me this Batman, where exactly in April are they going to find a spot to play for the 23-24 season?

According to The Buffalo News, Foust has a job lined up but it has not been announced.

My guess is they will find a spot for with the constant inflow and outflow of portal players

Yea, if this is truly problematic it needs to be address yesterday. If not, do some damage control PR to set the record straight. Either way moving forward without acknowledgement seems like poor judgement.

Maybe another podcast episode? We got Alnutt’s side of the MBB search yesterday

Hasn’t it been discussed Alumni doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to host this summer tournament (I.e. air conditioning)?

This could have been part of it.

    https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2019/05/how-occ-scored-a-tournament-site-for-the-basketball-tournament-boeheims-army.html

Though this article is a few years old, $3,500 might be cheaper than it costs to run a full day event at Alumni Arena. Figure 4-6 ticket scanners, a couple people at the team shop, concessions, 20 security or so, plus the non-labor costs. Of course there's revenue that will come in and it looks good for UB to host something like this. Before I read that article I was thinking UB would want $5k per day at the very least. And that might be low looking at other schools.

    Similar rates:

$3,000 per day at Hartford Community College (MD) https://www.harfordevents.com/p/rental-info/rental-rates

$5,000 per day (+10% of tickets) Chattanoga https://www.utc.edu/finance-and-administration/mckenzie-arena/rental-information

    $315/hour + direct costs Wyoming https://gowyo.com/facilities/facility-rentals/12

    $10,000 per day Michigan https://facilityrentals.ath.umich.edu/index.php/non-premium-rentals/

$47,500 per day at SDSU, $25,000 at USD https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/high-school-preps/sd-sp-preps-basketball-ucsd-rimac-20190218-story.html

I know Blue Collar U is not officially part of UB but what an opportunity lost. UB is so not ready for a bigger conference.

We don’t know the reasoning behind not holding it at AA though. If TBT wanted a bigger chunk of the pie that would push it to be unfeasible at UB, I’m fine giving it up. That being said I wish it was at AA
