  1. For your consideration...

Ok, there are now 141 FBS college teams. The difference from the top to the bottom is huge. So here is my plan.

Drop the number to 120 teams.

Class A would have 5 conferences of 12 teams each. The top 60 college teams in the US.

Class B would have 5 conferences of 12 teams. The 61-120 teams in the US.

The leagues would be roughly based on geography, as much as possible.

After the season, the last place team in each A conference would be relegated to the B league. The five champions on the B leagues would be promoted to the A conference.

The league teams could be reconfigured after the season, again based on geography.

The current championship bowl system would remain. 5 league champions and 3 at large teams. The remaining bowl games could have AA games, BB games or even AB games.

Rivalry games and any "non league games" would have to be worked out. But since this makes too much sense, with too much to lose for the current beneficiaries, it'll never happen, so I'm not worried about the fringe games.

  2. Has anyone put together a cheat sheet on who has transferred to or from, committed, de-committed, grad transfer, juco, freshman, etc?

I have to admit that I am completely confused on who's still here, who's new that I should be excited about, and who is an up and coming prospect.

  3. Related but only oh-so-slightly, I've always felt as if San Diego State should be the athletic model for UB.

Mid-major school in a professional sports town as part of a State university. Successful in football and basketball. Better facilities but, I think, a similar academic standing. And both cities are known for their local weather 🙂

Not likely is my guess. Especially with the strong local UB/Buffalo brand among many alums, some lingering private-school endowments and pomp within portions of UB, and the 'No thanks' we saw when "outsiders" Galisano and White tried their best to alter the brand. But it would be quite the impact to match other large states with a New York State University and a University of New York.

When Spitzer first brought this idea up in 2008 there was huge push back. But Hochul's plan is more specific and broader, and has the backing of the SUNY Board of Trustees.

I agree with all of this, but I think NYU might have some brand infringement with a UNY.
