  1. From a Rice University fan discussion board.

"... Not much about the AAC has changed in the past few years: it's all the same arguments about markets (not enough fans) and quality (few tick the athletic boxes, fewer tick the academic ones, and none really hit both). If we are fixated on the actions of the B1G, PAC, and ACC, and we know the first two are at least playing hard to get with the XII leftovers, what chance do the traditional candidates from the AAC and MWC have of attracting a major bid? It's not a lot of thought to find that the XII remnants have few apparent options except to stick together, and the XII is likely the ceiling for the traditional candidates from the AAC and MWC. When the writer dismisses all the traditional candidates, and a significant portion of them are disqualified over academics, they've gotta reach for a curveball proposal to hit word counts. If the PAC and B1G wants academics, well, here's Rice, Kansas, Tulane, and Buffalo. Do with them as you will."

... We have groups that go 4-5 deep playing oversees making great, tax free money...

I haven't worked overseas for a while, but if you are a US citizen, I'm pretty sure that you still need to be outside the country for a minimum of 330 days in a 12 month period to qualify for relief of a portion of your esrnings. And even then, the allowance is only for about the first $100,000 or so (the value is adjusted ever year). Anything above that is subject to normal federal tax. If, for some reason, you claim a domicile in a place with a state tax, you'd have to pay that along with any federal taxes.

So, in short, that overseas paycheck is likely not "tax free".

  3. LIU has announced the start of a Division I hockey team. They will be playing at the NY Islanders practice facility in Nassau County.

"The newest team to college hockey is Long Island University-Brooklyn. The school surprised many when it announced in April that it would start a men’s program that would compete right away in 2020-21. LIU has been busy lately, hiring inaugural head coach Brett Riley and adding recruits left and right. However, few expect the Sharks to be competitive right away next season. Yet, Mark Divver reports that the program is putting together a strong schedule for their first season. While LIU will be an independent in their inaugural campaign and likely won’t be able to schedule a full Division I slate of games, Divver notes that the team is expected to play their first game against UMass Lowell and square off with Boston College, Boston University, and Wisconsin as well."

The new coach even has some old ties to the Sabres.

... If you want to play football and make money, try to get into this league.  This is the only way that anything like current college football can survive.

I've often thought about a professional college football league. The university would spin off their profit making (or potentially profit making) team and license the rights to the university's name and logo. So the Ohio State Buckeyes would be a wholly own entity of the Ohio State University, but NOT a college team. The players would be paid without academic restrictions (though scholarships could be a team perk) and the fans could still root for the old Alma Mater. The league would be a little bit like a combination of the Big 10 and a working NFL minor leagues. Student Athletes would just be working athletes and get paid. Salary caps, signing rules, possible school subsidies and all of that would need to be worked out. I see it as more like hockey's junior leagues than baseball's minor leagues. Teams (schools) that don't make money could fold.

The rest of the 18-21 year old football world, beyond the elite athlete, would still be good ole fashion amateur football.

Hey I'm old. I like to dream.

  5. Hurley was supposedly a front runner for the DePaul job before turning to Arizona State.  I think DePaul ended up bringing back a former head coach.I don't follow college basketball enough to know if that coach is still around, but it looks to me like DePaul has come further than Arizona State since the respective coaching changes.

    Just sayin'...
