I thought Cohen was going to take the job if offered? What happened?

Associate Head Coaches at that level can make just as much money, if not more than mid-major head coaches.  He may have used this job as a bargaining tool.

He wouldn't be the first to do that

Is the thought Jones is not a fan of the new coach then? That's the delay in portalling?

I mean with the way the portal is going, even if Jones is pretty sure he wants to stay, why not put your name in just so you can see if there are other options?

He has absolutely nothing to lose at this point.

Really good recruiters are like really good sales guys, they burn the edges of morality and truth at times. An AD's nightmare is an NCAA violation for a mid-major conference that can't buy-off the NCAA. Not saying that's what he did but top recruiters need to a arrogant and cocky and that doesn't always play well with the guy who has to clean up the shit left on his doorstep.

NCAA Violations would have been a welcome site for Alabama this year compared to what they went through. I just don't see Hodgson as a head coach.  As others have mentioned, he has never been an X and O's guy.  Can he even draw up plays and know clock management? This was a big criticism of Whitesell, what makes people think Hodgson is any better?

He is a high level recruiter and to be honest he can make a lot of money doing that for the rest of his career.  I think taking a mid-major coaching job is actually a step down for what his strengths are.

  4. I feel like this was a year for Jim to really put his stamp on the program, whether it worked or didn't.  I think Jim kept too many things that worked for Nate and he tried to adopt them because of the previous success, but that's not who he is.

    1. DITCH THE HARD HAT.... It's not original anymore, heck even FLJ stole it at Syracuse.

    2. PLAY SLOWER....Nate had a very analytical approach to playing the way he did and not all coaches can understand that.  I know slowing it down is not fun to watch, but if we can be more effective in a controlled setting then they should do that.

    JIM... MAKE IT YOUR PROGRAM!!!

  5. I think we are sensitive to the calls that go against us, but to be honest officiating is just not good in general.  The MAC's big problem is the days we play games, which is usually the same day as the Big Ten plays... This goes for both men's and women's basketball.  The MAC should play more games on Fridays and Sundays and they would probably get better officials who are looking for a game on an off night.

You also have to remember, most of these officials are based out of Ohio and Michigan and they get paid the same amount of money whether they have to drive one hour to a a game or travel seven hours to a game in Buffalo, and with them paying travel, they end up making less money to come here.

  6. Here is my quick view on attendance....Buffalo doesn't have great sports fans... They have great Bills fans and other than that if a team is not winning at an extremely high clip, people don't show up...I think even the Sabres show that.

And yes, the long break without students and pep band is terrible.

  7. I have been a strong proponent of Coach Whitesell and I think he is a great man that any school would be proud to say is their head coach, but you are al correct in that the results just aren't there.

I think we would all be kidding ourselves if a change was made in season, I just don't see that happening.

But I do think a change is coming at the end of the season...And I will stay adamant in my opinion that Coach Hodgson is not the answer!!

  8. Really impressed with the win today.  A lot of guys bailed and a lot of guys got an opportunity to step up today and they did.  I don't think enough can be said about what Ahmed did when Washington went out so early.  It was pretty cool to see guys like Kevin Marks on twitter talking about how proud they were Tajay.

Nice way to head into the offseason.

  9. I am never going to complain with one non D-I game on a schedule.  Remember these schools rely on this game for budgeting purposes, just like we do with a Power 5 road game.

It's when we get to a second one that I am not too crazy about it and I don't really know what it has to offer to us other than maybe some confidence for guys like Caesar and Mading.  With that being said, I know we had Charleston and that fell through.  I can't really complain with the non-conference schedule this year in terms of competition and the option to see the team at home.  Maybe someday the perfect model will come to be!

  10. I would love to see Whitesell get a T at some point. It needs to be the right situation where it doesn't impact the game negatively, but sometimes it really gets a team and a fan base going just knowing the coach is doing everything they can to help the team win.

  11. Agree with everyone else.. A good performance on the road against a Big 12 opponent.  Right there for 30 mins of action and then things just fell off a bit.

Now it's time to just beat up on SUNY Canton and then I'll be interested to see how things go against Michigan St. to close out non-conference.

Definitely can't say this young group hasn't been battle tested.  Hope it translates well in the MAC!

ADMA hasn't been great. The buck stops with him. Every athletic director brings their own interests, background, and skills to the position. To be the best, an AD should strive for continuous improvement. Not sure where the improvements have been made under Mark's leadership. It's true that the field house was completed under his watch, but much of that was done by others.

The department had so much momentum from football along with mens and womens basketball. All of that appears to be gone.

My interactions with Mark have been very limited so my perspective is very limited, but he seems to lack vision and inspiration. There doesn't appear to be much tenacity.

Of course, the bureaucracy of SUNY makes his job more difficult. That alone could be a big reason for the regression or stagnation of the department.

Let's also not forget.. He is a football guy... It is why Football got another new toy yesterday with the sports performance center... They can say it is for the full department, but do you really think basketball or volleyball is going to go outside to use the facility when they have stuff in the arena.

In my mind, ADMA doesn't really care about the success or failures of basketball because he is cutting from them to fund a .500 football team.. But hey 6-6 gets you in a bowl game and we can celebrate, while 16-16 in a basketball season gets you fired.

  13. Everybody forgets that this current staff recruited and got Maceo Jack to sign. Yes we can say it was easy with FLJ, but he’s been a great addition and we are starting to see Jones is going to be really good too.

This is just an addendum to the conversation, bit saying anyone is right or wrong.

Akron has the tiebreaker and an easy schedule.

UB needed to actually beat some of the top teams to have a chance at the top 3.

They are destined for the 4 seed

Was reading this earlier, but with it looking like Buffalo will only play 19 conference games this year, there actually are no tiebreakers against Akron or Kent, or Toledo or Ohio for that matter.  Those schools are all going to play 20 games, so Buffalo's winning percentage will be different regardless.  They might get screwed by a half a game or they might screw say a Kent or Akron by a half a game.

This is what the MAC has decided by rescheduling every game except for two (CMU at UB, Ball State at CMU)

As a side note: I feel bad that our fans get screwed out of a game because the MAC had no problem re-arranging three roads games for Buffalo (Akron, EMU, NIU), but they couldn't help reschedule one home game.

  15. I think a big problem also has to do with these long breaks. I mean how many times have we had 5-7 days in between games this season. I think once we start playing games more consistently, things will pick up.

I get it’s quiet, but what is there really to talk about over the last six days?

Like the win, and at the outset I was thinking 10+ point win would be good game, but this was not a good game.  Have to step it up big time on Tuesday at Toledo, or it will be a long night.

My guess is the team will play well on Tuesday at Toledo. This team plays a lot better away from home and I can’t blame them.

Just look at this board…we won by double figures and everyone complains. Nobody cheers at all during the game except when the Shout song comes on. We might have the worst Home atmosphere in the entire league. It is really sad

On Whitesell. We all knew a big reason he was hired was bc he could keep the team together. In some ways it’s his gift and his burden. Keeping that core together placed an expectation on his tenure. Had the core gone their separate ways and Whitesell faced a rebuild year 1 who knows where we’d be as a program now. Tale of two paths.

This might be the most perfect explanation of the way every single person feels about Whitesell.
