I don't know who you are, but if you haven't followed this particular board recently (let's say the past year) in basketball, you are not allowed to have this perspective.  There are many people on the board, basketball in particular, who broker no dissension when it comes to anything negative about this coach.  Heck...all you had to do was follow the game thread yesterday and you see several people who delighted in pouncing later and after the victory on those who were critical of the team during the game and, especially, the coach.

Just follow the game thread (and this thread) and you can tell who they are.  It is a microcosm of society at the moment.  In fact, many people (like myself) who have contributed to this board for a long time have gone away (or are silent) since criticality is met with attack (or something derisive or sarcastic).  I, personally, have promised not to comment on the coach (or, basically, the basketball team) on this board until the current coach is no longer the coach.  This was back in March or so.  I don't consider this message to you to be about the coach or the team, just the dynamics of the board.

Obviously you sense something about the current board and the treatment of dissension since you posted a clear disclaimer, though (as I mentioned above) you are not allowed to have this perspective (at least from many posters...or much posters).

Your question is a legit one -- good ADs should have this stuff already figured out now, rather than what we went through a few years ago.  I suspect our AD has learned from this previous experience (after all, you should learn from experience) and has a plan.  Thus, getting inside his head (which is what you are trying to do here) is a reasonable question.

I do hope others on the board with knowledge about the staff can provide their perspectives on this interesting question.

    Hahahahaha hahahahaha

laying it on a little thick, aren’t we?

  2. Finally got around to reading through this thread…. Sadly It went exactly how I assumed it would.

Gotta love half the board writing off the team after a loss to a national title contender and one half of a game they ended up winning. I get it, we come here to vent but yikes. Did anyone expect us to be 2-0 on the road against Michigan and north Texas? LOL

its hilarious that people were calling for Whitesell to blow up on the refs, when a technical foul and the resulting free throws literally could’ve lost us the game. And come on, we’re seriously going to complain about Williams after he struggled to start the game? Dude just dropped 32 against Michigan and is one of the best players in the history of the program.

they definitely have some things to clean up, but this was a good road win regardless of how it happened. In the previous couple seasons we lose this one (the Syracuse and Ohio games last year come to mind). Pulling off a W against the odds in the 2nd half is a great sign going forward this year.

the refs were awful tonight. Some phantom calls and some that were really soft. The one to foul out Mballa at the end was ridiculous, it was a jump ball and they just decided to call a foul. The north Texas announcers were a little tough to take as well, but at least they were trying their best to be objective (and failing).

    some positives from tonight:

Jack’s shooting was on, that’ll be huge if he can keep it close to that level

I thought Skogman and Hardnett both looked good down low

Mballa’s foul shooting has been money this year

we stole a win against a quality opponent on the road in a game where we turned the ball over frequently and shot poorly for long stretches.

I watched the game and was impressed with the toughness of the team in the second half. Dickinson was gonna get his I expected that going into the game. In order to beat a team like Michigan on the road you have to shot a good clip from 3 and we just did not do that at all. Was really disappointed with Maceo Jack and Brewton. Combined 2-12 from 3pt line and supposed to be there game.  The shots were also good takes and some were wide open, just missed. Need better play out of both of them. Segu also can’t play 38 minutes a game, Curtis Jones or someone else needs to play a bigger role, need Segu to have fresh legs in crunch time. I expect a better shooting performance against North Texas.

Putting on my optimist hat, I think Brewton and Jack will find their shots. They just have to wait for open looks and take advantage. With teams having to focus on Williams, Segu, and Mballa those looks like come. It seemed like after the first couple misses they started forcing them up, either trying to cut the deficit or find their rhythm. Unfortunately it just wasn’t there yesterday.

I also think minutes will get spread out more as the season goes on. Whitesell wasn’t going to throw any of the new guys to the wolves against Michigan. it was also maybe best opportunity Segu and Williams will have to put their skills on tape against higher level competition. Williams especially putting up 32 and looking like the best player on the court will go a long way to showing scouts what he’s got. I’d be surprised to see them play the same amount of minutes against say an SFA or UCI

We look like garbage. Whitesell didn’t have this team prepared at all for this game and Juwan Howard is making him look like a fool.

Well we are playing a national championship contender. Outside the horrific 3 point shooting I don’t think it’s that bad. Say we make even 30% of them and it’s a single digit deficit

If there's one thing I'm not worried about with Mo it's recruiting. I'm confident he'll get the players here, I'm just not sold yet on his ability to gameplan.

I don’t think we can realistically judge based on this season. Right now we look like a team without an identity, which to me is 100% from having no off-season to implement systems

The game notes list the starters as: Williams, Mballa, Brock, Segu, and Jack. 4 Srs and grad student and we'll have to see if that goes beyond the exhibition. I'd bet a potential 2nd deep of Skogman, Hardnett, Blocker (or Fagan for bigger lineup), Brewton, Jones, would likely contend in a few low-major D-1 leagues.

Williams, Mballa and Brock on the floor together, will our opponents ever get a rebound?

Here is how the ranking sites view UB and the rest of the MAC through the first four games of the season.  UBs ranking has been trending in the wrong direction - and they would put us as the fifth best in the MAC.

That’s probably fair. The nice thing is the team controls their own destiny entering conference play. Start winning and we’ll swing right back in the other direction

That’s fair, but there is trends that we should be alarmed about… things like, lack of discipline, terrible play calling at times, pee wee football special teams to name a few.

All these things are fairly easily fixed. Blocked punts and unnecessary roughness calls suck, but they can be taken care of by next week.

We will always remember the worst second half of football in program history for sure.

Haha yes it was bad, but I try to stay positive especially because we WON. Remember this coaching staff was hired in May, thanks to Lance packing up and leaving 5 months after the coaching  changes are usually made. Then we dealt with losing players to the portal and bringing new ones in. It’s going to take a little time. There are things I’d like to see (a more aggressive game plan on offense for instance), but I’m realistic about this team needing time to find it’s rhythm
