I don’t disagree. Whitesell needs to be better with his rotation and buying guys minutes. A criticism I’ve had of his for his entire tenure. But my question becomes…our last game was 3 days ago at home…is that not enough rest time? Are we not trained to endure 40 minutes? Isn’t like we played yesterday. If that’s the case we will see a repeat of last year in Cleveland. If we make a championship game.

One other point…I wonder if Mballa is best served coming off the bench? Also maybe start Brewton over Jack? Thoughts?

Jack has to be on the bench. That's the only option.

Give Jones way more minutes and leave Jack there until he stops shooting.

Something happened and it wasn't just talking to the people in his corner

If it was what a turn of events but then again it was easter this past weekend and would have been around friends and family

Think he goes to a school close to home. Did Bonas sway him?

This has "big school came calling" written all over it. You don't drop after 5 days unless something else fell into place.

Mmhmmm. You didn’t decommit to go to Northern Arizona. A P5 school called with minutes to offer, unless you thought you’d be home sick and SBU or UB jump into the mix.

Way too early. Nothing is a given with kids these days. Hope you didn’t jinx it

Yuppp. I like how the only compliment of the staff recruiting process the last two years is that “well they kept the 10ppg PG from leaving”

2 years ago they had open spots at this time (5 of them) and brought in Mballa,  Hardnett and Skogman. If we can see that type of trio (hopefully including a guard or two) we should be pleased.

That's a 1.75 player haul. Hopefully they do better than that.

Factor in the 0-fer in 2020 and there is cause for concern

They also won a game in the NCAA tournament and then went and (re)added another scoring threat in Carter. I think we can say that they're solidly in better shape at this point.

We won't "know" this until we face them next year but the eye test tips the scale pretty easily in their favor IMO

They lose nothing and gained Jason Carter. Scale is in their favor by a lot.

MAC West schools are a mess. It’s imperative we beat them every time we play them next season.

The entire conference is a mess right now besides Ohio and UB in #2

It's 2021, we're the top team in a solid conference for a decade now, and we get news like it's 2001. We have less recruiting insight than any relevant peer program I can think of. But yeah roll out the dismissive hyperbole... 🙄

And re: the comment about strategy and publicizing offers. I don't think any kid these days is trying to keep his offers private. In fact most kids post their offers themselves, which then inevitably makes it's way to VerbalCommits. And that's why people think that we don't actually have many offers out there....

I didn't read DocCase as dismissive hyperbole but that's SkraBukes style for anyone who disagrees with him. I think he's argued 10+ people for disagreeing with the way things are handled right now.

It's a bullying approach of my way only

I'd assume sports journalists or committed fans/amateurs. Ohio has 5x more targets listed on VerbalCommits than us. Either our offers aren't happening, or they're not getting reported.

Verbal Commits and others are out there every minute scouring for offers.

We don't need it reported because the players themselves report every single offer they get. It's part of the process for them. It'd lean way more toward "offers aren't happening". I think saying that they are taking their time due to past misses holds way more water than "secret we dont know about it offers".

I have the attitude that 'no news' is 'no news', not ' bad news'.  There are 57 freshman point guards in the portal (over 800 total players available), not to mention JUCO and high school seniors.  I am ok with them taking time, as long as the end result is good.  That said I am eager for some news.

I'm fine with it, but its now April, and we don't have "news" of a single interested offer.

You can't just default to "we will get someone good because there's a lot of people in the portal"

Safe to say they won't go the HS Senior route.

This isn’t doom and gloom.   This talk just undermines recruiting.

What recruiting? In an era where everyone has some form of instant communication and verbal commits hawks everything, we have nothing going on.

    Except Nowheresville PG

So this isn’t just due to a sanction period for the violation? The OP made it sound like we can’t recruit because of the violation

They have to report all recruiting action to the NCAA. That was my point. I stated that they can't be doing anything "behind the scenes" or not known.

Nothing with COVID prevented them from still virtual recruiting for the program (outside of whatever weeks they took as their punishment).

  13. Teams that have been knocked out of the tournament are already securing players.

    UB is interested in:

No One - PG University of Nowheresville

Where is the Chipola recruiter? Or did he already use his bag to get Brewton and Zachary?

They have one player Fresh to Soph. Only one offer out (to a 585 guy going to Kansas State). This is trouble. Juco didn't play this year, so I hope that isn't the default. They aren't secretly doing anything btw. They are on sanctions.

I also think that we have a disconnect- most people on this board weren't up in arms during the extended solid play late in the year, including those (count me among them) who are skeptical about JW. What's more, I don't think a conference tournament finals loss is cause for panic. That said, all of the reasons listed that we lost that game (lack of depth, lack of shooting) are due to failure of JW to recruit or bringing in athletes that gave the program a black eye (kidnapping, stabbing rival player) and failed to contribute.

I was a Reggie supporter and defender until the very end. I thought he had brought the program to a level we were lucky to reach and had done so with integrity. I was proud of the athletes that represented our school. Having seen the past two tenures, however, I want and expect more. When my coach says (paraphrasing): "We just lost BVP on that inbounds, hat tip to Ohio. They made some plays"- I want to tear my hair out. Can you imagine either of our last two coaches reacting in this manner? They'd immediately follow that our play, in that situation, wasn't good enough, was unacceptable. He seems to have no sense or urgency or have a set of expectations for these "kids." I don't think you get the job done without demanding better- either as a coach or as fans of a program. One more year- NCAA or start fresh.

I like your thoughts. However, Most of us weren't up in arms because we get dubbed "haters' and "negative". We can't be. It's already came out many times in this thread about why people are miserable. There would be no reason to have a discussion about it, even when there were many issues that appeared, especially in the loss against Toledo and the win and 20 point come back by Akron. Even during the good stretch, why would we come in here to bash Whitesell? We still want to win basketball games. These are the biggest UB fan's probably on the planet that come on this board. You hit it the best though, we demand better as a program because this isn't 2005 anymore. Hurley and Oats put us on the map with their coaching, recruiting, and energy. Whitesell was left the prestige and recruits that neither of his predecessors had. Oats lost a lot of players too, but we didn't need to make excuses for losing Evans and other when Hurley left. Whitesell got those excuses.

I don’t understand why you say this.  I absolutely believe both the coaches and the players are at fault from time to time.  Everyone makes mistakes.  The key is that when they happen, the whole team learns from the experience.

I say this because many do state it's the players that aren't executing the coaches plans, but then later say you can't blame kids because the are 19 years old and to think of what you were doing at 19. Maybe this doesn't fit you, but it does fit a contingent on here.

There are legitimate concerns. The problem is that when everything is a concern for you and everything is terrible all the time well it kind of loses its impact. As for Jesef’s post that you quoted, I agree. We need to be better at home next season. I think that we will once fans are back in the seats, along with having a very strong roster packed with seniors. I’ll never understand people who choose to be so negative, especially with an amateur sport where KIDS come and play for the university, giving their all for free. As for the paid staff, time will tell if Whitesell was the right hire. So far the sample size is 2 years. 1) where we lost 4 starting seniors and our best 6th man in history, along with the entire recruiting class when Oats left, and 2) the year of covid where the season was a disjointed mess from the start and we still got to the MAC championship and a birth in the NIT. Am I disappointed we lost our final 2 games? Of course. But I’m also trying to be objective and rational about the situation. To expect the team to magically carry on the success of oats after losing Massinburg Harris Perkins Carothers and McCrae is not realistic. If you think that it is I don’t know what to tell you. If Whitesell can get a couple high level guards in the off-season everything will be just fine despite all the doom and gloom on this board.

This looks like we have a 50-50 division here. Many drafted players in all sports go professional at 18+. They are adults and for many better players, they are getting ready for their professional career (through NCAA), somewhere in the world. I also would like to state that much of the defense is not to blame the coaches because the players aren't executing. So it's ok to blame the players in the guise to give the coaching staff a pass? Which way is it? We can't have it both. If they are just kids, the paid staff should hold enough more accountability. Which is where I tend to fit in. I blame the coaches the most in these situations where they are up 6 with 90 seconds left and are pushing the paces with 25 seconds on the shot-clock with a graves three. That's coaching. That's the issues a lot of us have. Though, this team has one year left of success before a huge problem if they don't figure it out now. The current staff or team (whichever you want to blame) can't get over the current hump, reminiscent of Reggie ball. We can continue to blame CJ/Perk graduating, but we will now be 3 years past that, and I hope it's an allowable time for everyone for a team to be in the tournament again.

Perk was legitimately the top guy on those big teams (along with CJ obviously) and didn't start.

That was deliberate though, we aren't going to claim McRea was better than Perkins right? That was a strategy move.

Hamlet would have been a top 10 player in the MAC and missing piece for UB.
