The hire makes sense for Bulls fans given the success of LL coming from the DIII ranks.

Hard not to make that comparison for sure. Time will tell but this one looks even better IMO. What LL accomplished at Wisconsin Whitewater was incredibly impressive but they had won the D3 championship in the two years preceding his first year as HC.  Before McCollum, NWMS had advanced no further than the elite eight. They’ve since won 4 of the last six held national championships. LL maintained a well oiled machine, McCollum arguably built one.

My displeasure with this number would be alleviated with winning. Run whatever pace you want if it gets us in the win column.

This. We've seen what good a fast pace is when you don't have the personnel capable of carrying it out for a full 40 minutes or a coaching staff incapable of keeping a team disciplined in that system. By all means if Nate Oats comes walking back through the door let's keep doing it but i've soured on the idea of keeping that the identity regardless of the HC.

What's the report on Mennenga? He's been part of a big time program that has landed tons of talent over the years, but I don't know much about him individually.

People have brought up how they don't care about local ties and worry that would be a bigger factor in the coaching decision than it should be. In my opinion Mennenga is the example of overweighing local connections.

He's stuck it out in Oregon for a good amount of time and they've had some good teams and recruiting classes but AFAIK he's not their lead recruiter (I think his primary benefit would be his Canadian recruiting). His career is littered with quick stops at mediocre to downright bad years for multiple programs (Canisius under Barron who only won with son Jimmy, a quick stop in 2010 at UIC, one year at Providence under Keno Davis in 09-10, 1 year at Iowa State 05-06). I'm done with Reggie Witherspoon connected coaches (sorry Turner), and Mike Mennenga was a name suposedly under consideration before Whitesell was hired in 2019. Since then he's been connected to openings to smaller programs than Buffalo and has been passed on.

It would be a really underwhelming hire when compared to the resumes of the others under consideration. Hell I would take Mike Anderson before I would take Mennenga. I would take Kenya Hunter over Mennenga. I don't know there's a name that's been thrown out that I wouldn't take over Mennenga.

Kenya Hunter Indiana University Associate Head Coach??

has this name been floated or is this just speculation? This may be the name I'd be least excited to see attached to this job. Sure he has a long history of being at some big programs but it seems like every step of the way those programs seemed to have some pretty ho-hum years while he was there. Stints at Xavier and Georgetown seemed to produce the best results, but we're taking 15+ years ago at this point.

    Duquesne 1998-2000

    NC State (DBO) 2001

    Xavier 2004

    Georgetown 2007

    Nebraska 2014

    UConn 2018

    Indiana 2020

I think the longer it takes with no news the more Hodgson is out of it. He is known by the school, vetting process won't need to be as long. He also may of already said no.

I don't think I agree with this. Alabama has enough distractions right now for a 1 seed, I'd imagine 2 different assistants announcing their intent to depart in in the middle of a tournament run may be something they'd like to avoid.

I agree with Dabulls, I have no idea who is being targeted but my money would be on Cohen or Hodgson.

  6. Either Toledo or Kent were capable of winning a game in the tournament, but I think Kent State’s defense makes them a bit more equipped to do so. I’m glad they’re the ones representing the MAC and I’ll be interested to see who the first round match up is.

We all knew this day was near. He can't coach or recruit. All he could was convince Oats' recruits to not leave, so that he could go 2-4 in the MAC tournament

Seriously. All he inherited was one of the best mid-majors in the country with 2 four star recruits which, to his credit, he talked into sticking around the entirety of their amateur careers. And absolutely nothing to show for it. How Whitesell defenders aren’t more upset about the squandering of their time at UB I’ll never understand.

This is Reggie level basketball now. Super sad

While I would not take Reggie back, I would absolutely take the Reggie years over whatever the hell this is. Even when his teams were bad at least they had a schematic ethos.

  9. Man I really hope Zid transfers. Hero ball does not mix with terrible shooting. Steals are a gaudy stat but only because he abandons any sensible defense to go for the ball at every opportunity. He is a massive liability when on the court.
