I know this isn't the best time for this, but the last four years the team was actually pretty exciting (featuring three years of Rondo Jeenathan, two of Graves, one of Davonta) and went 70-49. Underachieving, frustrating, unable to live up to the astronomical standards of Oats? For sure. But we're getting a bit revisionist. In that interview I posted recently, even Oats expressed serious doubt that they could maintain the standard.

We've had players that flash excitement. We've had games that flash excitement (I was at the Ball State game in Muncie and thought "hey, maybe I can get behind this team). We have not had an exciting team (one that makes you think they can win games of consequence) in 4 years.

IMO there's a difference between a fan like you who understands the game and can see potential in statistical categories like efficiency and then there is the general public/donor base that says "I want to support a winning program". We are currently seeing what happens when the latter is left unsatisfied.

Sorry to break it to you though, this thinking is exactly why we are where we are. No NIL investment equals losing. Equals no interest from fans and donors. Equals irrelevance. Equals death. The landscape has rapidly changed over those 4 years. Rapidly. Hate to keep brining up the U, but a final four team all bc of NIL. It matters. Can’t ignore it. To ignore is to become what we have become. Left behind.

And this department will just keep saying "but we need donors!" after spending 4 without putting an exciting team on the floor. "Hey, we just got turned down by 3 straight coaches... care to throw us a couple hundred grand?"

They do nothing to support the ask. No effort, no accountability, no hope for the future.

While Calhoun does not get me super excited winning at YSU as hard. From Jeff Goodman's poll a couple years ago on the best jobs in each league YSU was last in the Horizon League:
    https://watchstadium.com/horizon-league-coaches-rank-the-best-jobs-in-the-conference-12-28-2018/

Where they win: “Honestly, I can’t really think of anything. The job is brutal.” – Horizon head coach

The knock: “Where do you start? It’s by far the toughest job in the league, and it’s not even close. They don’t have support, tradition or really much to sell, to be honest.” – Horizon assistant

Well he seems to prefer it over a jump to UB so...

  4. I have to assume the department is feeling some shock from this as well. How long does a re-group take? Do they have to start interviews again? How fast are they slinging out offers? Were these denials done days ago but we're just learning about them? How many offers can they realistically make?

    This sucks.

It can be how coaching works imo. If he's an A coach with D talent, he's doing his part to raise their level.

Re: recruiting, sure he'd be in the same pool for talent, but he'd have far more resources at his disposal to use on his already established connections. If I go to Wegmans with $200 in my pocket, I'm going to get better groceries than with $50 at that same store.

At least legally speaking this is more like driving to Wegmans in a nicer car and maybe a better outfit. That $200 is maybe $100 at best after Whitesell through away our cache.

He's much better than his record indicates.

That's not really how coaching works IMO. I get that YSU isn't a basketball mecca but he's not exactly coaching against the greatest teams so I would expect more than 1 finishes above 6th place in... 6 years. What should show us that he wouldn't come in and middle in the MAC given it would be essentially the same [geographic] recruiting base?
