Neither have I there back to being irrelevant just another women’s Big 4 basketball program playing out the games yearly on the UB Bulls women’s basketball schedule. Let me know when Becky Burke either figures it out or is fired. But no I am not wasting my time watching another mediocre Western New York basketball program. I already have four men’s basketball programs that are mediocre and irrelevant this season. Last game of the Big 4 basketball season tomorrow with UB Bulls loss to the Akron Zips. BSF the UB Bulls men haven’t played yet? No chance against the Akron Zips tomorrow we mind as will forfeit this game and all of next season as long as Jim Whitesell is the head UB Bulls basketball coach we have no chance at NCAA’s tournament championship in my opinion. UB Horns Up! Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo

If you’re done watching UB basketball then why bother sharing your thoughts about UB basketball on a fan forum? That’s the behavior of trolls, not fans.

UB alums excluding this board are terrible at donating and attending games after they graduated

UB alums didn’t attend games when they were students, so why would you expect them to attend games now?
where are the data that show the percentage of game attendees as alumni or not?

Even after the WMU basket, it still took the refs a few seconds before stopping play. I'm not totally sure the refs knew Young was laying under the other basket.

Well, I looked it up. Rule says don’t stop game until either injured players team gets ball back or otherwise a dead ball. However, refs may stop the game if opponent is NOT on a fast break. Ultimately, none of the three officials appeared aware of the 5 on 4 u til the basket was scored. That’s a conversation I’m sure refs will have amongst themselves and hopefully with an evaluator later on.

That was after UB gave up 7 quick points in less than a minute. In the past, I objected to this yelling. In this case, it might have been appropriate.

She appeared to mostly be yelling at Stone.

WMU shot up 38 3-point shots and only made 13. CMU only made 1 shot (attempted 6) inside the arc that wasn't a layup.

6 of the 9 UB players are graduating.  Lonely on the bench with just Ellis, Mashaire, and Ogden during the ceremonies.

Since Johnson wasn't honored, does that mean she'll be back for her 6th season?

Hard to win any series of games in Cleveland without any depth.

I’m with both you and DooleyBull. My left hemisphere understood coach’s outburst, but at the same time my right hemisphere’s reaction was “coach hasn’t earned the right to that sort of inartful response on this court in front of these fans”. Meh, that’s just me.

Interesting about Johnson - maybe her pregnancy hiatus from playing gives her an extension?

Finally, what’s the rule about a player going down with an injury while the opponent has possession? Play on, like in today’s game - or did the refs blow it?

    Go Bulls!

Agree. It would be great for this group of players to experience the MAC tournament atmosphere in Cleveland. The venue is great for players and fans and our family have a great time in Cleveland. We always like to meet fans and especially parents from the other teams. Met some parents from Akron after the game and had a nice conversation about basketball and life. Go Bulls!!

Coach flipped out a few minutes into the 3rd quarter. I’m not sure how I feel about that as a longtime fan and supporter. Regardless, props to the team - it’s a tough ask for the starters to play pretty much a full 40 minutes day in and day out. Good luck in Cleveland. Go Bulls.

First, I didn't watch or listen to the game. I'm still recovering from watching them in-person.

So, I was wondering why UB had 46 points in the paint on January 14th vs EMU and only 8 points in the paint today.

Last game, here are the stats of made vs attempts for points in the paint:

Winfield was 8 of 14, Stone 4 of 7. The team was 21 of 36 in the paint overall.

By my count, UB was 21 of 36 in the paint, 1 of 3 outside the paint/inside the arc and 5 of 14 outside the arc.

    Yesterday, the stats are:

Winfield was only 3 of 11 in the paint and the others barely made it into the paint. The team shot 4 of 16 in the paint overall.

So for yesterdays game, UB was 4 of 16 in the paint, 1 of 2 outside the paint/inside the arc and 13 of 33 outside the arc.

So, in January, it was an inside game. Today, it was "flinging" up threes.

    Was EMU playing zone?

Well, the UB starters’ (aside from Haddie) average height is around 5’8”. The EMU starters look to average 6’2” or so. Sometimes that matters.

I'm going to have to disagree with the comments that the all-female ref crew was any different than the previous home game, a 3 pt loss to Bowling Green. In the BG game there were 2 male officials, and they called 11 fouls on UB all game. Why? Did it have anything to do with the gender of the officials? Of course not. The reason there were only 11 fouls on UB against BG and only 14 the other day against NIU was that head coach Becky Burke has told her team to be less aggressive on defense, because we can't afford to have players foul out. Similarly, we are not aggressive on the boards, again because we don't want players fouling out. In both games, the refs called the game appropriately, there were simply not a lot of fouls to call.

Also, when a team is less aggressive on defense, its a lot easier for the refs to get the calls right (i.e. fewer mistakes or questionable calls).

Also, the lead official in the game against NIU, Maggie Tiernan (you might remember) called an intentional foul on Teresa Onwuka with about 2 seconds left in double overtime (before the ball was alive) with Central Michigan ahead by 1 in early 2020 (when Central Michigan/UB rivalry was the best in the MAC). Did she do this because of her gender? I doubt it. Would a male official have made the same call? Yes I think so. https://www.ubbullrun.com/2020/1/30/21116045/wbb-about-that-intentional-foul-with-2-seconds-left-in-2ot-against-cmu

My poor sentence structure seemed to imply that the gender of the referees influenced their treatment of the players. That was not my intention. I should have separated my thoughts (1) I was happy to see an all female officiating crew on a day when & where women’s athletics was celebrated; (2) I was pleased to not see the usual crews; (3) I was pleasantly surprised with the calls. As a national referee of another sport I appreciate materiality when violations are called…this crew seemed better than most at that.

So UB loses by 10 today to Northern Illinois, getting badly out-rebounded 51–25, and NIU's center A'jah davis picks up 21 rebounds, 18 points and shoots 8-for-10. What choice does UB head coach Becky Burke have here? Essentially, none. There is no one on the bench (until Salmons returns) that she can put on the floor that would provide better rebounding or better interior defense. And so, when the season began, and we had a team with lots of names that we didn't know, it still looked like a big front line by MAC standards, but then injury to Kiara Johnson, and the absence of Ronni Nwora, and the (hopefully temporary) absence of Kayla Salmons, and suddenly we've got no effective big players. Hattie Ogden, despite being 6-2, has been effective from the perimeter recently, but not on defense in the paint, and hasn't demonstrated any strong rebounding abilities. So the bad news is we're stuck with what we have right now, and that has major weaknesses. The optimism of early January is gone, and I think there's no real solution. I'm not trying to blame Becky Burke here, she was, and is, in a tough situation that wasn't of her making.

As an aside…the all-woman officiating crew was a refreshing change from the stale, piss-poor (some say biased) refs we usually see in AA…very few “marginal” fouls were called (and I was glad to see a usually overlooked “3 second lane violation” draw a whistle).

Do we have a scout team? The only "scout team" I know of are male practice players. Their "team manager" is already on the roster (Briyanna Baron). The usual "desperation" attempts to add to the roster have already been done, and those additions haven't helped.

I assumed they did. Quite a few women’s teams do (and some of the power programs have scout teams with men on them). If UB doesn’t, with several players MIA, who the heck do they practice against? How can they truly be prepared for opponents without a scout team to mimic their play?

Another way to get extra rest for players is to take them out if you get a stoppage shortly before a media timeout.  It gives the time until the media timeout plus the media timeout to rest.

That couldn’t hurt. Once in a blue moon a team as short-handed as this one gets lucky using a member of the scout team as a walk-on.

Spot on comments. This game was even worse than what the score, and even the lopsided stats, would suggest. The UB offense is the opposite of dynamic - I suppose “plodding” is the correct description. Worse still, there were some situations where it appeared some players gave up on even trying to rebound or hustle after a loose ball. As I asked a few days ago - what’s the point?

  12. Over the past 20+ years I have attended nearly every men’s home game. The atmosphere inside the arena has often been electric. But as I get older (Class of ‘75 alum) I find myself making excuses for not going. Why? Like many in this group, I bristle that UB does not go all-in on the BB program, and I’m often disappointed in the poor showing by students. But in truth it’s also the cumulative effect of smaller things…frequent coinciding events at Center for Arts makes parking difficult, egress from campus is maddening thanks to Campus police, amenities in AA are poor (long lines for rest rooms and refreshments), and lastly, it’s time to dump this repetitive, irritating DJ concept…

What needs to be explained? You play your best players, in an attempt to win the game. Are there other competing goals? Sure. Could she do things differently? Sure. And that's why Becky Burke gets the big bucks, to use her judgment on these competing goals. She doesn't have to do it my way, she doesn't have to do it your way, she doesn't have to do it Jim Whitesell's way, she is getting paid to make her own judgments on how to proceed.

From my view, maybe skewed a tad by strong teams in the recent past, the goal was to win the conference championship. That’s more likely to happen with a strong bench. But sure, let’s play to win now. Why not? Thanks for responding.

For whatever reason, Ogden and Ellis don't get a lot of PT. Not sure if BB doesn't have faith in them yet, she doesn't think their defense is up to par yet or what. Salmons is very productive in stretches, but then ends up on the bench never to be seen again. It's an odd dynamic. Perkins looked lost in early action and has gotten better throughout, hopefully that can continue. Coming in off the bench for 5 minutes and being expected to consistently hit 3's as a freshman is unrealistic. It's not like they are Paxton or BJ Armstrong from the Bulls runs. I would have liked to see a 7-8 person rotation, but the coaching staff doesn't seem to have faith in 4-8 really. It could bite us in the ass eventually. Boeheim had that philosophy for years, rarely went 7 deep and in the tournament it was always exposed. You have to develop players and that has to happen on the court sometimes, even if it's 10-15 minutes a game.

I’m a fan but confess I’m not a “basketball guy”. Please explain the coaching philosophy here. What is the point of three 5th year players getting the bulk of the minutes while using a (very) short bench? Even if you win enough games to qualify for the post season wouldn’t you go into a grueling week with exhausted starters and a bench with likely inadequate game experience? Additionally, how does this approach develop younger players for the future?

This is for another topic maybe, but the attendance issue will stay where it is unless we are putting a winning product together (like with Oats) or moving to a bigger conference.  My mid 90s days (go Sixth Man Club) have many memories of basically empty arena, unless we were playing VALPO.  Things really didn't improve until we jumped to the MAC.  And heck, back in the 90s the only time you'd see a packed gym was during graduation or Midnight Madness.  I don't see this season doing anything to help with attendance.

Sidenote, I'd love to know the average attendance at UB basketball games when we were in the Mid Con compared to the MAC.

To my understanding, moving MBB out of the MAC would likely mean leaving the conference entirely for all other sports. I doubt UB would ever do that.

The Department of Athletics has fallen greatly from their golden era. It definitely shows. There are so many "fans" that stopped coming to games. Season tickets for basketball are down considerably from last year IMO.

I’m a “fan” but I want a better experience for my money. Arena amenities are substandard (lobby too small, too few rest rooms, slow concession service), parking less than ideal, and driving out of campus is maddening due to campus police “controlling” traffic. Having said all that, I’m in attendance more often than the 7,500 students who live within walking distance from Alumni.

The first thing you see on UB Basketball's official website right now is "Blue Collar U, the University at Buffalo men's basketball alumni program, claimed the 2022 TBT, winning the $1 million prize..." Hardly consistent with BCU dismissed as "some semi-pro team."

If Lillard, Dennis, and Matthews didn't play 10% of minutes and it was a "true" alumni team, would your perspective change? I kind of doubt it.

In the NIL era, passing on honoring a group of our all-time greats and promoting our program brand with a small banner in the name of some bygone ideal of amateurism feels like a mistake. A compromise could be a paid advertisement in the shape of a banner congratulating the team...but to me that just highlights the gray area absurdity of objecting in the first place.

A better compromise would be a colorful, backlit professionally designed and built display in the AA lobby.

    And roll them we did.

Like everyone else, super proud of them and super thankful for the opportunity to relive the glory years.

I especially loved getting to feel that strange old sensation of dominating up double digits and still being stressed because of our frenetic pace and loveable gaffes (Nick's botched catch before the Elam 🤦).

Let's get that banner up in Alumni this winter 🤘🤘

Watching it again today - knowing the outcome I can actually relax. Watching last night even when we were up by double digits I was stressed whenever Perk would miss a free throw, etc.

When you come into a program, you have to hit the ground running. Waiting around to see who stays wastes time you could have spent building your team. Unless it's a player of Fair's caliber, you assume you have a blank slate.

And carryover players with legitimate worry that they will be treated differently from players recruited by a new coach.
