I mean we did try to land Cohen, he also mentioned Rob Jones who another said may have turned us down. Anybody with sources not named Mark Alnutt isn’t going to bat 1.000?

I’m more entertained by people with thin sources than just wallowing in Alnutt’s incompetence…

I don't believe many of us are wallowing in Alnutt's incompetence. He has royally messed up this search and shouldn't have a job at UB.

Where did I say anyone was official next week? I was waiting for you to comment before but you ignored it. You are getting slapped with the block.

If anyone would like me to stop posting what I hear, I will gladly do so.

I don't really care if you block me for calling out your continued BS.

Unfortunately you wont see this, but yes, I would like you to stop posting what you hear from clearly unreliable "sources."

Hi Gang,  I've been off the grid for the last week +.  I don't feel like going through 35 pages to find out where we are.  Someone please summarize for me.  Who have we offered the job to that has turned it down?  Who do the leading candidates seem to be at this time?  Thanks,

Cohen, McCollum, and Calhoun have all reportedly turned down offers.

    Hodgson was hired elsewhere.

    Washington apparently hasn't been interviewed.

Unfortunately, that leaves you, ChubbyHubby, to be the leading candidate at this time.

Honestly if it’s the Norfolk Rob jones, it isn’t a horrible move by any means. He’s done nothing but win there, which is incredibly hard to do at a consistent level. 104-34 in the MEAC is nothing to look down upon.

He would not be a good hire. He took over for Anthony Evans, who seemingly did better at Norfolk St, and then struggled at FIU.

This is why. This is correct from what I've heard.

I also think there is some "well they tried for big fish" and to get us pumped when they hire someone halfway decent and be like "see they could get someone still"

Coming from the person who said Cohen would take the job and also that it would be done last week.

Not sharing information is fine. Lying is disrespectful.

Alnutt deserves a lot of heat for the last 4 years of UB MBB. Ruined all momentum we had from Hurley/Oats. Not sure if it is enough to put him on the hot seat with Football and WBB on the right track, but overall have not been thrilled with his tenure.

Hope he just leaves on his own, but he is so bad.

I will say that on the initial look at Calhoun I was very concerned but diving deeper you can see positives

Stare long enough at anything and you can find things you like.  Heck, I am sure someone is working on tables and charts right now to compare how YSU has an 8% improved game flow in conference road games compared to similar conferences during the last three years, except for the COVID year.

I actually had the opposite effect. Initial look got me really impressed. Basketball experts speak very highly of him.

Diving into his teams stats, made me think he had a fluke year.

  8. Hodgson, Washington, Cohen, McCollum. All have likely turned the job down (or weren't officially offered).

Not really sure what happened with Kenya Hunter, seemed to be in for a short time, but nothing since.

Now on to Calhoun, a very well respected coach in a bad situation. Is he better than the others? I hope so.

One tidbit from a Twiiter spaces broadcast last night, an insider said McCollum was flattered by UB's interview and interest, but it may not be the right fit for him. The tone was not positive, now have to see if UB steps up if he has ?'s on money/league/recruting to WNY.

Sounds like coach-speak for "thanks but no thanks"

We are really grasping at straws now

Yea, I have very little interest in Calhoun. No real success as HC outside of a decent single season in the Horizon League. Sounds like a fall back option to me and I agree if he's truly in the mix I am losing confidence in this hiring campaign.

He's much better than his record indicates. People continuously say how it is almost impossible to win at YSU (for a number of factors). Best friends with coach of the Celtics, he definitely knows basketball.

With that said, he interviewed for BSGU and didn't get the job (might have turned it down) and he really does only have one good season, which featured a whole bunch of seniors. Lost in semifinals of conference tournament as 1 seed, and then lost at home in the first round of the NIT to Oklahoma State.

The only thing about McCollum is does he have a pipeline into D1 players? The only difference with say a dominant HS coach is that those players go on to major programs (Wes Clark). He also wouldn't be able to come with much of a transfer class either. D2 talent doesn't usually translate, even the top of that league.

He would need to be linked up with a D1 recruiting pro. I'd be more worried about that than the Xs and Os which he clearly excels at, unlike Whitesell.

That said I love the win percentage. I just need him to come up with a premier recruiting plan and coach.

That could result in him keeping Foley, a seemingly above average recruiter.

McCollum looks like an excellent candidate, at least as good as anybody else who's name I've seen floated. He may be my #1 now.

To put him in perspective, America's hottest coach, Tobin Anderson, had a .771 win percentage in D2, never advancing past the elite 8 in 9 seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas.

McCollum has a .811 win percentage in D2, advancing past the Elite 8 four times (with 4 national championships) in 14 seasons at NW Missouri State

Interesting video. Does anyone know what UB’s collective/NIL looks like compared to the rest of the MAC and mid-majors?

It's really only a factor at the bigger schools. You can actually argue that it hurts more than it helps, if donor money shifts from Program to Player. Unless more money enters the system (NIL + School), the facilities will ultimately be affected negatively.

I'd much rather keep investing in the school and in the facilities than to give an 18 year old kid $50,000 to sign.

Funny that we're talking about Zid posting his dunks on social media after losses and 2 years ago we were talking about Graves doing the same thing. Sounds like the hallmark of the Whitesell era. Loads of talent but no discipline or team mentality - a stark contrast to what Oats built.

Yeah, Oats really builds team culture. If your teammate asks you to drive your gun over to you at 1am knowing that you've been drinking, you should 100% do it, because that's what Coach would want. 🙂
