The MAC is a one-bid league. There is so much parity that a loss by the Bulls in conference was a statistical certainty.  Another loss or two is highly likely, resulting in a slip out of the Top-25.  Just because Buffalo beat Syracuse who went on to beat Duke says far more about the uncertainty of game outcomes than their predictability.

The NCAA tournament is about P5 schools and automatic bids for the non-P5 conference tournament winners.  The only way non-P5 conferences can improve their stature and secure at-large bids is to schedule the P5 teams OOC and beat them. Here's what the other MAC teams attempted this season, pre-conference:

Akron lost to Clemson, Xavier, and Purdue

Ball St lost to Purdue, Alabama, and VA Tech

    BGSU lost to St Johns

    CMU lost to TCU

EMU lost to Duke, Rutgers, and Kansas

Kent St lost to Louisville; beat Vanderbilt and Oregon St

Miami-Oh lost to Butler and Xavier

    NIU lost to Michigan St

Ohio lost to Xavier and Purdue

WMU lost to Ole Miss, Cinci, and Michigan

Well put. And Clemson, Xavier, Oregon St, Vanderbilt, and Rutgers are on the outside looking in at this point. Butler and the Johnnies appear to be on the bubble (as are Syracuse and San Francisco). If Buffalo loses one or two more before the MAC tourney, which seems probable, they will have to win it all in Cleveland. Having said that, they have the best team in the MAC and should be able to get to the dance.

  2. The refs might be bad. OK, they are bad - they suck. But Buffalo did nothing tonight to make anyone think or say, “This team is a team that is good. This team belongs in the dance.” They flat out stunk! Couldn’t get stops. Gave the ball away repeatedly throughout the game (17 TOS!). We’re outrebounded. Shot like crap. All that against a mediocre team. This game can serve as a catalyst to turn it around, or as a harbinger of more to come. I think it’s a fifty fifty proposition.

  3. Yeah the MAC refs suck. But today illustrates many of the Bulls’ weaknesses: Foul shooting, rebounding, failure to contain pure scorers...compound that with a bad day shooting and TOS - how many more times will this happen? Kent St? Toledo? The Bulls are going to have to win the MAC tournament to dance.

Nate is one of 48 coaches nationwide participating in the Infiniti Timeout For The Win challenge to support cancer research. The winning coach will have 360k donated in his name to help defeat cancer. You can vote for 3x/day so get started today and do so every day between now and March 11th. This would be a great way to say thank you for all he’s done for UB, Buffalo and WNY. And what better way to support Crystal and the Oats family having battled and kicked the big C’s arse just a couple years ago.

Do the votes have to occur every 8 hours? I just voted. Tried to vote again. No go. If anyone deserves this, it’s got to be Oats. Thank God for the medical practitioners that provide the care for the patients and their families stricken by this scourge.

Obviously our future success depends on Oats staying.  Obviously next year will be a "down year" by comparison to this season.  But there is one big thing we must remember...if we can win 3 or 4 straight games in the MAC tourney we go dancing.  So in a way we control our destiny, always.  Next season will be about testing ourselves in the non conference, again, and building for the MAC tourney. But as long as Oats is here its all about building the program into a mid major power like a Gonzaga.  We aren't comparable to Gonzaga as they currently are but if you go back in time and review how they came up the comparison is valid. The trajectory of the rise of the programs are similar in terms of winning conferences, making the NCAAs, gaining notoriety and pulling some upsets. And if Oats takes a page from Mark Few and stays then over the course of next 10 years hopefully we can have continued top 25 success like a Gonzaga.

Gonzaga has won 518 games since the 2001-2002 season. They have danced every year. It’s my opinion that they have been over-rated in many of those seasons as evidenced by their early bails in the NCAAs. Still, that is a model of consistent standing. Oats is doing a fabulous job at UB and I’m not alone in hoping that he stays and continues to bolster the program. Let’s wait a few years before we compare UB to Gonzaga.

  6. How can we compare UB to Gonzaga? It’s absurd. Look at next year. I don’t care who is coaching the team, UB is losing Perkins, Massinburg, Harris, Caruthers, and McRae: 62 points per game. Plus the defense that they give. And the leadership. Who will pick up the slack? I like Graves - he’s athletic and can shoot from three and get to the rim. I love Jordan - he’s a defensive stud and a real team player, but not a real scorer. Now we get to the current freshmen: Segu, Williams, and Fagan.

Segu is quick but short and light. Not much to go on so far from his body of work, but like his hustle and looking for the open man.

Williams is a rangy and raw talent. He’s got to be reigned in though. He’s a shoot first guy and when you’re 2 / 31 from three that’s bad. Too early to see what type of defense he’ll provide, but I haven’t been impressed.

Fagan - just have no idea.

    The transfers and JCs: ?

Does anyone really think that the Bulls will dominate the MAC next year? If Oats remains to coach next year, they have a slim chance of returning to the dance. If Oats gets hired by one of the big boys for big bucks, God help his successor.

  8. Two or three years ago UB played Canisius at KBC or whatever it was called for a few years running in some doubleheaders. If I remember correctly, UB season ticket holders had to fork over $20, which may be due to the fact that it was considered a Griff home game (I can’t remember). Twenty bucks isn’t outlandish by any means, but it is roughly double what the price of a season ticket at AA is per game (Don’t know what a ticket costs for non season ticket holder). The GA slots at AA may be good for youths, but I wouldn’t sit there. A friend of mine and his wife and family sat there for the Miami game - they weren’t exactly thrilled.

If, in the future, the Bulls decide to hold some games at KBC, the tickets, parking, food and beverages are going to cost more. If they can attract a minimum of 12,000 fans, go for it. Otherwise, I don’t like the idea.
