  1. I saw a headline today that the NCAA might revenue share with athletes. Wonder how that would work and if that would “level the playing field”. Doubt it. I’ve said it and I agree with others, once funders realize they aren’t getting bang for their buck they will make deals multi year contracts.

While you are looking for more information, you do know that NIL money does not have to go through a collective.  You could sign a player to an endorsement deal directly.  You do not think that State Farm went through a collective when they signed the deal with Caitlin Clark, do you?

This. No prohibits players from going on and getting their own endorsements. Most players have NIL agents. The ideal situation is when collectives and local business come together and work deals and have deals at the ready for players.

Do you guys think coaches are already hinting at NIL deals in recruiting? Like, is the FB staff subtly mentioning "NIL money's available for 2025 transfers" or is it more for keeping our current players happy? Curious to hear your thoughts.

My guess is they have 218 days to come up with $250k to retain the current roster.

It’s both. And everything all at once. It’s money to bring in freshmen, transfers and to retain a player who would be worth it. This collective is about establishing not only money and donors but establishing connections with, for example, businesses in the Buffalo area that want a UB athlete to be their pitch person. It’s everything. It is in its infancy at UB, long way to go no doubt, but finally at least we got something. Now let’s get more. More donors. More money. And heck if you just wanna contribute to MBB that’s awesome. I agree money donated should go into a collective pot unless specified that this is for MBB. And one final thing, of course having a collective is used as a weapon in recruiting. 100%

If I could "donate" money to player and in return get a guarantee they will be good and stay 4 years, I'll do that in a heartbeat.

I believe this is the next step in the evolution. A step that will curtail the portal hopping. The ROI on money spent by collectives isn’t good right now when player X is only at a school for one year and that team fails to make a run. I think collectives will get smarter and player contracts will become a thing.

Does this mean there are 2 layers of administration of this money?

Looks like this is a St. Bonaventure Business instructor (with a misspelling of her title on the school's official web site), a venture capitalist, a business consultant, a chemist (?), and a lawyer.

Would seem like a bunch of people that would want to take some of that donation money.

Most of them have degrees from UB. So yes the Bonaventure tie looks off putting but she holds a marketing degree from UB. Hedges is a graduate and played football. So they aren’t random nobodies.

Personally I was hoping for some size that could help this year rather than a potential red shirt.  I guess that Oboh is likely to get roughly 15 minutes. Hope he can produce on par with Jack.  Hard to gauge how he will fare until we see action in November.

I don’t see Bradford redshirting. In today’s game there’s no time for that. Kids want to get on the court asap so they can portal. Based on the reviews, this kid has a chance to start.

This announcement has been a long time coming. Heard they originally had issues convincing boosters that NIL was necessary but that they now understand the importance after seeing what's taken place the last few years at UB and across college basketball.

I mean were they living under a rock? Also football leads the way, so hopefully it’s a commitment to NIL across all sports.

Wish him well, but DePaul doesn’t exactly seem like a step up from Davidson.  Went 3-29 last year (0-20 Big East) and haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2003-04.  Assume NIL $$ was a factor.

Nice player, too bad he couldn’t have been a Bull all 4 years (or 5) and be more than just a footnote in UB MBB history.  With 3 teams in 4 years, sadly he won’t leave much of a legacy behind at any of those schools.

Chris Holtman is the new head coach.

Tough to be a fan of any team right now. Even Duke and Kentucky are getting hit. The only one I haven’t heard much from is UConn. Not sure how they are holding up.

I believe at least two players from UCONN declared for the draft. So whether is draft or portal, everyone getting hit.

Another Alabama guy in the Portal, 6'10 Freshman Sam Walters. Even a Final 4 appearance doesn't guarantee consistency year-to-year. College basketball is a wacky world.

There’s definitely layers. Some tampering going on and/or Nate probably thinking it’s easier/cost efficient to bring in a new player than retain a rostered player. I can see agents/reps or other coaches telling a player, transfer and you’ll be a starter or roll player here.

  11. Even after a final 4 run Oats faces the same problems most coaches do. Griffen played very well all tournament and wants to bounce. Perhaps someone got in his ear and said he can make more money elsewhere. Today’s state of the game folks.

I was at the Jim Christian press conference today and spoke with him afterwards.

I'm going to increase my college basketball coverage next season. With me being back with Trainwreck Sports, I will be credentialed with UB, Canisius and Niagara so I look forward to providing additional content in the future.

    Speaking of Canisius…
