  1. I’ll just say this in the debate of highly coveted vs under the radar recruits…essentially Coach Halcovage is building from the ground up. It was clear whatever the last regime was doing wasn’t working so why not take a blow torch to it and build your way from the ground up. In relating this to recruits, perhaps he is running into a challenge of getting “higher quality” guys here bc we were and are in that poor of a state as a program. Yes we have fallen that far from the Oats days. Which brings me to Hodgson…he very much still has all the years at UB and the bama years of equity built up. He’s known as a recruiter but can he coach? Flip side, perhaps Halcovage is confident that with his first ever recruiting class he can coach them up build them as core pieces then as the years come fill in the gaps. Win games, a title and along the way bring in higher level guys. I for one am not gonna criticize bc we know nothing of these players, know nothing of how coach will coach etc. I do know that if he brought in a 4 star recruit we’d be criticizing if that player didn’t pan out. So damned if you do damned if you don’t . All the while we haven’t even played a game yet. I want high level guys too but at this juncture it’s a little unrealistic to expect them to want to come here when we have a rookie head coach, bare cupboard of talent and by all accounts nothing in terms NIL. That’s why I said before, patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I don't think I said anything to contradict this tbh.

"Some electricity in the guard group is never a bad thing."

"...you gotta love NYC point guards."

"For now I'm choosing to be optimistic, as I understand that it's a heavy lift to fill 8 spots and not every guy can be a star recruit."

I agree that yes, building takes time and yes, high quality players won't want to come here quite yet. It's just a bit of a reality check that we're recruiting down a level from what JW was doing (based on the relatively little info we have to go on re: mid-major recruiting). To get this thing off the ground, Coach and his staff will have to develop talent and put them in positions to succeed through strategy, both of which are just as important as recruiting.

I’m not going at you. I can just sense an impatience growing amongst some here. And ppl wanting transfers as if we are in a win now mode. I think it’s pretty clear coach is choosing to bring guys with multiple years of eligibility. I wouldn’t consider it a step down. Just a different approach for this upcoming season. And as of today there’s about 1,800 kids in the portal. So still plenty of time.

If I'm being honest, I'm a little concerned about the quality/pedigree of player we're bringing in. Competing with the MAAC/NEC/MEAC for talent is not how you get to the top of the MAC. I'd love to hear Coach G's honest thoughts of how it's going thus far compared to his expectations when taking the job.

For now I'm choosing to be optimistic, as I understand that it's a heavy lift to fill 8 spots and not every guy can be a star recruit. I do hope we add junior/senior transfers to round out the roster so we can recruit those spots again soon and hopefully raise the level of guys we're after.

I just beg for some patience. Coach is building. And building will take time. He is an unknown commodity as a coach so why would high quality players wanna play for him. Right now his reputation is that of having been an assistant on a two time championship nova staff. Gotta give him time. He wasn’t gonna come in and bring nova recruits with him. However he is bringing in what he feels are nova style players that he can develop as a core going forward. There’s nothing wrong with a NYC guard with a chip on his shoulder. He may come in and improve his 3pt % and he may come in and not be relied upon to make threes but rather facilitate the ball to those that can. Let’s just be patient. This is his first recruiting class, can’t expect everyone to be a diamond in the rough or a standout.

Also held offers from Rutgers and Manhattan according to Rivals, not sure why verbal commits didn’t have that. His twitter also has an offer from seton hall

I believe these offers were from his initial recruitment???

Is the #notcommitted just standard to include? It does seem unnecessary to me.

It’s become pretty standard. Bc during visits they pose in uniform and since we are in the social media age, it’s all posted. So they add the hashtag so that no one gets the wrong impression. Or there’s no spoilers for when they do the grand announcement on social.

Also didn’t Sr. break his jaw during his career…perhaps that’s why he can’t bust a huge smile.

This is a quote on Bobcat Attack allegedly from Jeff Boals regarding the transfer portal while talking to fans at a caravan event:

Unsurprising insight from caravan event in Pickerington:
Players in the portal are driven by dollar signs. "And big men are more expensive than anyone else." -- Jeff Boals.

I read somewhere that it was rumored Ohio had a decent chunk of change in their collective for basketball. They recently added a former 4-star Maryland transfer and 3-star Creighton transfer.

Pair that together with UB being relatively quiet on the portal front and it makes you think. Jerrod Calhoun was rumored to not be interested in the job once he heard about the Bulls NIL situation. I think this is going to play a bigger factor going forward than many posters on this board want to admit.

Big men cost more bc they have no future in the nba therefore they stay in college and make money. Example Bacot from UNC and now Dickinson. Who literally said he chose Kansas bc they paid him more than Michigan did. Also it’s clear to see we had no NIL plan and that whatever plan we had severely lacked. Hopefully the new regime is committed to growing the nil base.

  7. I’m not desperate. We don’t need one year bandaids who are gonna come in and want to be the lead dogs and stunt the growth of younger players. If you get me a transfer with multiple years of eligibility I’m down. But I’ll pass on one year rentals. Unless it’s the “final piece”

I mean, are we not trying to get any portal guys? Can’t win with what was left over + Sy

Do we really want portal guys? I’m all for coach building a program of young guys who will potentially be here for 4 years. Again, there’s multiple ways to build but if high school is the draft and the portal is free agency then you build through the draft and supplement through free agency. Coach is looking to bring in a core. All for it.
