Rebounding is nice, but if he's going 2-9 every game from 3, it's wasted possessions if we don't get the rebound, may affect team morale, and may affect flow of the game. Also, it hurts Jeremy's confidence. There is more to his game than just chucking up 3 pointers. He has the ability to get inside and get layups and shoot mid range shots, and also forcing fouls to get to the free throw line.

Agreed. If he’s not feeling it from outside then he has to use his other abilities and get to the rim. Drive and score or drive and dish. He’s not just a shooter. We keep saying he will come around but this has been a season long issue.

  2. Akron plays solid defense so we will have to limit turnovers and execute in the half court. They also make about 9 3s per game. So while they don’t score a ton they can hit 3s. If we can get run outs that will make life easier. As has been the case the environment will be dificult (ready to court storm) and the opposing team will be extra jacked up to knock us off.

First off two difficult road games and we can’t overlook Akron. They want to make it a bare knuckles matchup let’s take it to em.

Having an outside shooter changes the visiting teams willingness to pack in their players down low to prevent easy baskets by Cierra and Morrison. This is why Courtney is so valuable when she is hitting her three's. The mystery is why Hannah Hall sometimes refuses to shoot, especially 3s since she is often in position and her mechanics are very good.

    Speaking of outside shooting...

Jeremy has done other things well like rebound but we need more consistency from the outside.

I’m watching the Houston Cincinnati game and the Houston band just played Mo Bamba. Our band must do this. On the following dead ball they played music. Point I’m making is there should never be silence during a dead ball and I prefer the band take the lead rather than music that may not be to everyone’s taste.

PS I’m not some older fuddy duddy. And I like rap lol.

Apparently Perkins violated team rules in the locker room after the BG game. So maybe he damage property and the university was responsible for paying for it?

Either way he took his medicine and responded. Very mature of him to do so.

As for today we showed how bad we can be and how great we can be. We got the win, still a long way to go and a lot to clean up. We are gonna get everyone’s max effort so we have to fight complacency and bring max intensity. When we do so no one can be us in the MAC.

Big road games this week. Really hope we beat Akron to get to the Toledo game which is shaping up to be ginormous. Btw Toledo is on their “bye” this week.

Not sure of his exact actions, I'm assuming Oats would address it tomorrow. I'll be covering the game tomorrow so ill see if i can find out more.

Dontay hurt his foot a week ago.

Crap! For a team that hasn’t olayed in a week this is the worst news.

Perk could have a big game tomorrow too. CMU has no size.

Hope Dontay gets back sooner rather than later.

Looking like Dontay wont be playing (was in a boot today) and that Perkins could be facing a 1 game team suspension after his behavior after the BG game.

He has been running with the scout team and all indications are that he is supposed to sit. Could Oats change that with Dontay out?

    Jfjsjdjsjshdhs!

What did Perk do at BG? And what’s wrong with Dontay? I heard Oats on the radio this afternoon and he didn’t mention anything?

For a number of reasons this has quickly turned into not only a must-win but must-win-big game...

If we limit turnovers, rebound and play solid defense the rest should take care of itself. I feel the team will come out hungry bc of the week off. And being at home will be a boost. I expect a double digit win. But more importantly the start of getting back to UB basketball. Blue collar. Go Bulls!

So I was looking ahead at our updated team sheet (on reddit). I don’t want to overlook CMU on Saturday but hopefully we can crush them. Next week is going to be huge. At Akron is a Q2 matchup and at Toledo is currently a Q1 matchup. They could both be critical resume builders if we can go win. Let’s hope this team gets back on track

Couldn’t agree more. We have to handle business at home tomorrow then things get interesting. Bc life on the road has been a whole new animal this year. I can’t say I expect to win on the road anymore but hopefully we win the next two then that Toledo matchup will be beyond huge. If we can win the next 3 games and get to the end of the month where we get 3 straight home games we can get on a big roll heading into March.

  10. I think what the girl’s team has done this season is the blueprint for how we would want the men’s team to be next year.

With all the talent and leadership that was lost many thought this would be a down year but FLJ has done a tremendous job getting the most out of the team. And the team has responded and overcome adversity. I know having Dillard is a huge advantage but still. Opponents know she is a beast and yet she still goes off and makes her teammates better.

Translating it to the men...we could only hope next year’s “down year” resembles the women this year. Solid in conference play and a threat to win the conference tournament. We will have holdover talent from this season. Add some new prospects and hopefully growth from this year’s freshman and we can remain a threat.

Wes Clark was someone who could create his own shot in a pinch.

Wes Clark was on the court for a few months and left such an impact and void. He could hit from outside and his pull up game is what you hope Segu learns. Wes was so calm with the ball unlike Jordan and Caruthers who can get careless. He is truly missed.

I think bc he transfered from a SEC school it was almost like a top baseball prospect having a cup of coffee in the bigs then going back to the minors and the rest of the teammates asking all wide eyed what’s it like. And bc of that when we needed someone to step up he took the mantle and then brought the rest of the guys with him.

We’ve seen CJ be like that this year. The guy who hasn’t...Harris. And we need him to be better.

  12. Nothing surprising about it. We’ve been saying this since conference play started. Every team wants a court storm. As you said it forces us to raise our level of focus and play. And it’s tough to play like that every game especially when teams are admitting we don’t care about one game but we are looking ahead to you. It’s going to be a tough road to the end of conference play and I hope this hardens us. Not mentally drains us for March.

I have a feeling they wouldn't have been in a good event next year if not for Penn State pulling out.  Teams pulling out and switching events is rare and there were likely very few teams available for the last slot.

No doubt! Thanks Penn State. Oats mentioned last week in a podcast or radio interview that he was still having trouble scheduling for next season. I’m sure this will help immensely.

You also mentioned taking money or exposure...I say we are still in that “becoming” period that either or is great for us. Exposure is money and money is, well it’s money.

If possible I think UB should actually try and go on the road with this one and maybe play at Florida if they can as part of this.  It would be a homecoming of sorts for Davonta Jordan, Antwain Johnson and Ronaldo Segu

I don’t mind road games against P5 schools. Works better for the net rankings. And I like the swag of winning on the road.

Is it challenging to get into a pre season tournament? What does it take to do that?

I don’t know specifics. Maybe one of the other guys with better knowledge can fill us in.

But I will say this...I assume it’s very challenging to get into certain tournaments bc those tournaments at the end of the day wanna make money. And not all mid majors bring in dollars. Perhaps it’s somewhat comparable to college football bowl selection.

I feel, and maybe you guys may agree, this could be the best tournament we’ve be in?

My understanding is that it is only a three game event.  However, teams are free to make their own agreement for an additional game, if they want, and can include it in the event at a fourth game.  But the teams have to negotiate those games themselves.

    This year's extra games:

    Northeastern at Davidson

    Ball State at Purdue

    App State at Alabama

Opted out of playing an additional game:

    Virginia Tech

    Wichita State

Which is awesome to have that option to negotiate. Either way 3 for sure games against good teams and on American soil!

I think oats needs to quit messing around and stick to playing the upper classmen only. Segu and Williams will have 3 years to play more minutes. The games we lost in the MAC they both got more mins. This team is good because of the seniors and guys who played last year Jordan/Graves. They are the ones that won over Arizona and beat WV/Cuse. I honestly dont care about the freshmens development for next year. We should want to win THIS year when we have this historical senior laden team. That said stick to a 7 man rotation going forward only play the freshman at the end of the games or when really in foul trouble.  Just my opinion.

We have seen Oats in crunch time stick to the main 7 and steal a few minutes with the freshmen. That’s the formula for big games. However you have to play more than 7 during conference play, otherwise come March we will have dead legs. It’s one of those lose the battle win the war situations.

  18. I just saw this. This is exciting. A quality tournament that gaurauntees 4 games. A campus site game (I assume we’d be the road team) and 3 neutral site games. I was hoping we would find our way into a non conference tournament. Big credit to the staff and administration. Should be fun and more exposure against quality teams.

*Note: some teams in this years field play a campus site game and some didn’t. Either way it’s 3 games for sure on a neutral court.

The Segu and Williams issue is an interesting one. I have read a good deal of posters on this board state they are not ready for this level but what is that really based upon?

Is it based purely at looking at the stats or what they have actually done when on the floor? I would argue that we may be better served to let these guys, particularly Segu, figure some things out playing additional minutes than they have been. I think the case for that grows in games where guys like Harris and Jordan struggle as was the case Friday. Yes, Segu may be a defensive liability but so was the rest of the team in the 2nd half.

I evaluate the two frosh based on what I see. I’ll admit I bought into their hype. Specifically Williams. And to this date they play like freshman, sometimes good most times lost. Segu seems further along than Williams. But both need to keep growing and developing. We are 7 strong and yes I agree with Mike that we aren’t as deep as we thought. I mentioned after the loss to BG that after Jordan we have no true point guard other than Segu. But both their better days are ahead of them. It’s unfair to think they would be leaned upon given the amount of talent we had returning.

As for the ranking, I’m shocked we are still ranked. I think that shows the voters respect our body of work and potential. But I think our slack has reached its limit. Time to start a good win streak again.

UB is still ranked in the NET. Perhaps they shouldn’t, but they are. The only way for the Bulls to hold or improve their standing is to win out. Any, and every, loss will knock them down - and deservedly so. You can’t lose to NIU and BG - two nothingburgers - and expect to retain your pedigree.

I agree. Which again is why we prolly won’t be ranked in the polls this week. The net is a metric with factors that play in our favor. But pollsters have always given the benefit of the doubt to the major schools as opposed to us.

Its going to be nice to just get back to basketball.

What bothers me most , I think, is the damn selection committee is so biased I think UB could win out from here and still maybe 'only' be an 8 seed. If a mid major gives them any reason whatsoever to downgrade them they will. Its discouraging but i guess that's why they play the games.

Which is also why I think we won’t get ranked this week.
