AWESOME stuff. So great. Guy in he middle has a great personality. Would listen to him over anyone on WGR.

Do agree. Just refreshing personalities. Will be listening to this handle now and if more choose to tune out WGR and let management know maybe they will reconsider their positions but I will not hold my breath. Go Bulls!!!!

Why are you concerned that the team is shooting 47% as a whole? And still shooting 33% from 3.

We're shooting way better 10 games in this year than we were last year. And right now, we're way better defensively. The only person right now who's been struggling shooting the ball is Jeremy Harris. But, the rest of the team up to this point has been pretty good.

Agree. Several players have played better and more consistent making up for the loss of Clark namely Graves, Caruthers Jordan and Segu. As long as Harris does the other things like playing defense and rebounding even if he struggles from the field we should be okay. Hope Harris finds his touch before MAC play begins. Go Bulls!!!!

Hopefully WVU steps up during conference play and beats Kansas in Morgantown.  They just need to jell.  Huggins is still breaking that team in and they will be better come March than they are now.  Its still a quality win (Quad 1I believe) and right now it doesn't look that way but by March hopefully it stands true.

Agree, Any win is a good win and can only enhance our rankings. The main thing is just continue to win and gain more confidence with each win. It is still a long season and anything can happen to teams from one week to the next. Go Bulls!!!!

First off - thanks to all that showed up under the net to help make some noise today. From my brother next to me, to RMA, to chubbyhubby who stopped by at halftime.  Turns out the students and band were still around, so I don't know if we were really needed.  But it was a lot of fun to reprise an old, noisy role and I hope we raised some energy today.

I was worried by those two big guys SIU had, 24 and 33.  If they could get the ball to them inside, they were going to do some damage.  But UB's defense clamped down for the first 12-14 minutes of the first half, keeping our opponents to around a point-per-minute pace.  Perkins had a big day, effective in the ways he's usually effective.  I'm impressed by many things with this team but one of them today is how there are so many guys on a deep roster capable of stepping up.  Graves down at Bona, Perkins and Jordan today, on a day when Harris wasn't hitting.  SIU got back into this game with the combination of UB going cold from the field for a while plus hitting their foul shots each trip.  UB came out in the second half with another run and while SIU tried, they couldn't get the deficit under 8 or 9 again.  The key point being that time with 5-8 minutes to go, that was their chance to make a move and they didn't/couldn't.  UB didn't give them many good looks outside, but SIU was able to get in the lane several times in the second half.

Jordan - always good for drawing a couple charges.  He got his fourth foul a little past midway through the second half (I think), but they left him out there.  He proceeded to earn another charge, drive to the basket a few times for some big buckets.  Really stepped up today down the stretch.  He and a few others had a great reach around the hoop to hit layups around long, reaching opponents.
Perkins - cleaner in possession today, didn't fumble it like at Bona.  Hit some shots from several spots and hit his foul shots.
Segu - has a first step that's a bit quicker than we're used to, kinda like what we saw from Clark last year, the kind that makes you realize they are a higher level player.  He's getting tougher on defense too, which is what he's going to have to do to get playing time in this lineup.  Unafraid to shoot from outside when given the chance and can hit them.
Williams - showed his athleticism and has been better the past 2 games.
CJ - kind of a quiet game but maybe we're just used to him getting double digits by now that we don't notice

Credit to the community for showing up today.  The building seemed pretty close to, but not quite, full.

Every time you make noise on defense, every time you join in some sort of 'BUFFALO' chant on offense, you inspire our team and that helps put points on the board.  It helps create a good atmosphere (as opposed to what we saw at Bona last week) that encourages more people to come to games, come to this school, and for some, play for this program.  We've continually seen teams over the past 15 years worthy of that effort, enthusiasm and support, few if any more than this group.  So get excited and enjoy every minute.

It was a good crowd. A lot of buzz in the crowd before the game and the highlights they show before the tipoff are very good and many times you see the opposing team looking up at it. I wonder how many other arenas have the same setup. Another good win but still troubling on the outside shooting especially Harris that looks like it is mentally starting to bother him. Harris is usually good on the rebounding side even when he is not scoring but he only had one rebound. I think Fletcher not playing has hurt the overall SIU chemistry. We did play a decent defensive game but SIU is very deliberate on offense taking almost all of the shot clock. They only put up 45 shots to our 62.  The positive for our team is when a couple of our players are having off games there are others who can pick up the slack. I know Nate will have the team working on breaking the zone defense that we will be seeing against Syracuse and some of the MAC teams. I heard Syracuse lost to Old Dominion in the dome!!!! Go Bulls!!!!!

I'll do my best to avoid beating the "WGR hates UB" horse* but I think this has more of an impact than some are willing to admit. Say you're a casual hoops fan and you tune into the local radio station only to hear the hosts speak of Syracuse as the local team and UB as the up-and-coming challenger. On top of that, 75% of the reason they're even talking about the local team is because they're playing Syracuse.

I know that there are Syracuse alums at WGR. They can and should have fun with this game but it influences their overall programming which influences the local community. It's just garbage.

*I didn't avoid it at all but whatever.

I agree Joseph. I blame the station management for the content of this station or lack thereof. It is ok to be an alum of a certain school but when it affects and influences the content of your show I can’t agree with that. I think White and others should go back to Syracuse and and work there and be a cheer leader of their team. So our family chooses not to listen to that station. I agree they can have fun with talking about Syracuse but not at the expense of not talking about our local teams. In the meantime our family will listen to stations that will talk about our local teams and have fun with that. Looking forward to a great game and a boisterous crowd on Saturday. Go Bulls!!!!

Rome wasn't built in one day. Relax.

Do agree. The general buzz is upbeat and definitely more fans and the general public are showing more interest. Hope we see good attendance from the students. Is the whole student population leaving and going home for the holidays?? Hope the word is out for students to show up for the game. The Bucky and Sully show is talking about UB on a daily basis and will be talking to CJ on tomorrow’s show. I don’t listen to WGR55 much any more because they are just Bills and Sabres but has anyone heard anything from this station that they mention UB? I think they talk more about Syracuse!!Go Bulls!!!!

If by some small chance anyone is making the trip to Hanover, NH - let me know, I live 5 miles away - I'm happy to offer suggestions for restaurants, hotels, etc. Normally I'd have a spare bed at my place as well, but my kid comes home from college that day.  Maybe I'll see you there!

Thanks for the update. We have been making road trips to some of the games but unfortunately with XMAS we can’t make this one. With the team’s success more fans seem to be coming forward with good information on many topics. On another note is someone able to post the interview that Coach Jack had on radio 1270 today? Go Bulls!!!!

There are very few coaches ahead of Nate that I would take over him. Coach K and that might be it. Hurley at 63? Nate has done more with less than Bobby.

Another accolade for Nate Oats. A coach that has the right kind of work ethnic and a down to earth type person. If and when we have success this year Mark Alnutt better tear the contract up and give Oats and staff another raise and extension. Go Bulls!!!!

I love the transparency of this coaching staff. They're not cocky but they certainly don't hold back.

Really nice to be able to hear the different perspectives from Bryan and get to know his personal side. This does appear to be a really close coaching staff and their success has brought life back into the UB community. Go Bulls!!!

When did UB not promote itself?

Did not mean that they have not but just with the increased exposure and success I am hoping for even more of increased importance on promoting the overall UB sport experience. Of course the fans have to buy into the sports experience with their attendance at games. Go Bulls!!!

This is something that I'm starting to come to terms with. We've all been along for the ride for years - the average fan hasn't. As much as we want instant sellouts, we're still building in the minds of many new fans.

I think we're going to enjoy one of those best years we've had in terms of public support/attendance and buzz. The AD(epartment) is doing it's job, winning, raising profile and maintaining academic standards. We're going to become hard to ignore soon.

I do agree with many of the opinions on the popularity of the basketball programs. It took the last 4/5 years of success to start getting more people interested in UB sports.  The media interest has increased. 1270 the Bucky and Sully show is talking about UB on a consistent basis. WGR is still just a Bills and Sabres show especially with one of the morning guys wanting to talk about Syracuse basketball instead of UB because he went to Syracuse!!!! The UB admin. Has to continue to keep their foot on the gas on promoting UB sports and hope the sports culture starts to change in our favor. We have to exercise patience and in the meantime enjoy the ride. Go Bulls!!!!!

We need to sell out Alumni. Get that place rocking. No let down. Keep it rolling.

If we can get 4,400 for LeMoyne we should be able to sell out for SIU. Only hope there will be more media coverage by radio,tv, and UB can put more pressure on the Buffalo News to run some articles during the week. Go Bulls!!!!!

With all of the negative exposure from Sat’s game from the student section I was glad and impressed with the memo from the UB president. I would hope most of the students and fans understand their is no place with that type of vulgarity and language at sporting events. Also I am sure there are still many who like  the one student who used the “It’s a free country and you should be able to say anything you want”, We were raised by our parents with certain rules and were always told that all of life decisions came with responsibility and accountability and to always think before you act and to treat others like you want to be treated. Sadly that has been lost in many instances in today’s world and at sporting events. Here’s hoping at our UB games we have passionate students and fans who treat others with respect and dignity. Go Bulls!!!

That’s what I don’t get about a handful of Bonnie fans on the bandwagon board. We should all realize that the higher profile a team or teams are the better it is for college basketball in WNY. That dude bonaballa is a complete train wreck. He’s pissing all over Buffalo which means he’s pissing all over a ton of Bona alums here in the Buffalo area. While I don’t know for sure I’d guess the highest percentage of Bona alums live in the Buffalo area. It sure seems so anyway as I know 30-40 of them. And then there’s the dude who insists UB is cheating. They say ignorance is bliss so he must be extraordinarily blissful. As far as the game Bona just doesn’t have, yet anyway, someone who can control the game when it’s on the verge of getting away from them. They sure could have used an Adams or Mobley today. But Bona also struggled with UB’s maturity. They start three seniors and two juniors while bringing in two seniors as the first two subs. Given UB’s experience and how’ve they have been tested over their careers it probably isn’t surprising that we won by double digits even though I thought it would be an extremely close game. Bona with Stockard back are heading in the right direction. With Schmidt at the helm they’ll only get better as the year progresses and the young guys get more experience. Good luck going forward.

I do not understand how any college administration and student association would want the type of behavior from their student section at a game. If they are they should be truly ashamed of themselves. If this is what the supposed support of a team is coming to I don’t want to follow college sports or support a team. Hope that never happens at UB. Go Bulls!!!!

Im still in awe by it. Being a fan for almost 2 decades though I appreciate it and live in the moment. I don't take anything for granted. Every day we show up on the top 25 line at the bottom of ESPN I smile because as amazing as this is, its incredibly tough to do. I never thought Id see us ranked in my lifetime. 350+ D1 teams, even if you are a great team in the MAC being ranked isn't really possible. I was fine with just seeing a #25 next to our name for 1 day. Didn't care after that. But the train keeps going, up to #17. I still feel the same way, enjoying it each day. I even got giddy seeing #17 on the program I bought at todays game. That will be a keepsake forever. Although hopefully we beat Bona which would mean the SIU game program we should be ranked the same or possibly even higher.

Just noticed San Fran blew out Cal 79-60 in their first game back too. Makes that win look even better although Cal appears quite down this year, its still a nice name win. SIU has also been very good recently.

We really have 4 tough games coming up

Well said also Derek. Also being a fan for decades our family is enjoying the moment. I agree it is great to see our UB name on ESPN. As UB85 has said we need to appreciate what we are seeing and experiencing. In the case of Bona you can see what happens from one year to the next. They lose their top two players to graduation and the next year starts out with promise with returning players and the potential of new players. With injuries and players not meshing together right out of the gate the season can go in a different direction. Enjoy the ride and Go Bulls!!!!

I eat those delicious red osier beef sandwiches combo meal for like $9 with no line. Plus with beer now, the concessions are “improving” . I’ve been to 100s of games and literally never have had to wait. Grab something pregame,  not the only 10 minutes it’s busy at half. The upstairs concessions literally never have anyone in line.

At half time with the increased crowds the lines are backed up big time. One suggestion is to have more kiosks and vendors standing in the hallways selling some food/drinks. All that Iam saying is that UB has to react to how the lines are and other crowds and lines of fans.  Go Bulls!!!!

This was a good win as is any road win.  Bona will be ranked far higher as the season progresses. SIU will be tough. We need a huge crowd. As Derek said, just an outstanding performance by Javon Graves today. Nothing frazzles him. Also let’s not forget Williams. His best college game by a mile today. That’ll be extremely important for his confidence and morale going forward. Which is huge for the team’s success going forward.

A very good road win at a very hostile arena. Great game by Graves shooting 7-9 from the field and 5-6 from the 3 point line which has been where he has been struggling. With not good games from CJ and Perkins and still win by 18 is a testament to our depth and the maturity both mentally and on the physical side. Harris starting to shoot better 7-14 and 3-7 from 3”s. Good to see both Williams and Segu play 19 minutes with 9 points and with no turnovers or fouls between them. I agree UB85 that you play and give 100%, that when you win you show humility and if you lose you show grace and dignity. That should be for both the players and the fans. Go Bulls!!!!

i didn’t know Bryan was adopted. He’s done a helluva job. UB is lucky to have such a great stable of coaches.

Agree! We have had a chance to talk to him several times and seems like a down to earth guy who was sincerely interested in our opinions.  Go Bulls!!!!!

Unlike bonaking here’s some more arrogance and uppitiness from Bona fans just in case you were not already fired up enough for toda’s game. http://bonabandwagon.proboards.com/thread/16336/ub-st-bonaventure-rivals

As they say, when you walk the walk, you can talk the talk even if it’s shabby form. Let’s get a W so we can stifle a bit of their chest thumping. And more importantly to continue this great start to the season.

This should be a very exciting game for all involved. This UB team does seem to have a different mental makeup from the last few years. They have been battle tested the last few years and have been in tough games on the road. As long as they keep their composure and play their game we should be successful. Go Bulls!!!!

I consider them a rival strictly because they are in the Big 4. During my time at UB we always traveled to Olean to see the games and their fans always traveled to UB. Do I think it is a bitter rivalry? No. But any game against one of the Big 4 seems to have a different feeling than other OOC games.

Do agree that any game against one of the Big 4 has a different feel no matter what the records are of the teams. We have went to most of the Big 4 games over the years and for the most part just the buzz of the crowds are different. It has been just an enjoyable time to be a local college basketball fan in spite of where your allegiance is. Go Bulls!!!!

Thanks for the info. Great post! Enjoy the atmosphere tomorrow. Just hope you’re wrong about the score. Having Bona and UB as teams excelling can only do wonders for college basketball in WNY.

Also thanks for the post. It good for all of WNY if we have all other teams have successful seasons and are able to see great games. You can still have allegiance and total support for one team and still enjoy quality basketball. We can still all have our opinions without getting into sarcastic comments. As far as our family we are happy that local college basketball is relevant again.Go Bulls!!!!

No surprise. He is a Jamestown guy. If truth be told I was a huge Bona fan back then too. Bob Lanier, Bully Kalbaugh, Matt Gantt were all favs of mine.
