Nuts may be a severe understatement. These mid-majors struggle to put asses in the seats. People don’t want to pay $300 for season tickets, now you ask them to shell out a few hundred a month to go to players, then those same players don’t even stay 4 years so you’re really not even rooting for individuals. If someone took this idea to the bank for financing, you would get laughed out of the facility.

As Seinfeld said, you are rooting for laundry.

While you are looking for more information, you do know that NIL money does not have to go through a collective.  You could sign a player to an endorsement deal directly.  You do not think that State Farm went through a collective when they signed the deal with Caitlin Clark, do you?

I did not post any PR.  It was answers to the simplistic questions that you asked.

I know no more about the collective than what is in the announcement and on the website, other that finding out that the Board members are not being paid.  My source for that are the members that I know.

So, just to clarify, donors to UB don't have any influence over how their money is used?

A donor to UB or any other charity has the right to designate how the donation is used.  If you want money used for a particular sport or academic unit, that is how the money is to be spent.  One of my early donations to UB was to fund a device to be used to safely remove an injured football player from the field.  The money was held for that purpose, for years, until I told them they could use the money for anything else with football.

Therefore, you could limit your donation to people on the men's basketball team.

You expect someone to provide the level of service of a full-time employee and expect same results from a volunteer?

Depending on the level of work required, there is no reason why a volunteer cannot do all that is necessary.  Much of the background work is done by Blue Print Sports. https://www.blueprintsports.com/client-services

So she receives a 1099-NEC from St Bonaventure every year?

I would assume that St. Bonaventure would comply with the Internal Revenue Code.  Adjuncts do not make that much money. A believe that a 1099 does not have to be filed if the money paid is under $600.00

Who picked these people to lead?

Ask them.  I can tell you that the two former football players are both very involved in donating to and working with Athletics and have been for years.

Who makes the decision to let them go if they're not brining [sic] in the money?

    Ask them.

Someone controls the board. Alnutt? Foundation?

Since the corporation is not affiliated with UB I doubt it is controlled by Alnutt or the Foundation, ask them.

You expect someone to provide the level of service of a full-time employee and expect same results from a volunteer? You realize schools have full-time employee doing NIL work.

So basically, from your post announcement posts,  it appears as if you will only donate to a collective that has your wishes at stake and will allocate the funds in a way that you deem to be appropriate.

Before you open your wallet to your self controlled collective let me know so that I can protect my clothing by buying mothballs first.

would anyone contribute to the team last year? Well, this year, we got the same team but will be on paper worse. If I donate to the NIL, will the money go towards a 4 or 5 that we need and still haven’t landed.

Yes.  I gave on UB Giving Day last year and last week (to men's basketball and every other team) and to the collective its on opening day at the Hall of Fame level, on a monthly basis, to increase the amount over a one time payment for that level.

    1 hour ago, UBinMD said:

Since it’s MBB, WBB and Football, would you contribute to any?

Look at the website, it for all sports.

until I see the 990 and the distribution, you won’t see a dollar.

You were going to try to set up a collective and I believe were going to donate to it.  You asked me for money and I said I would donate if you set one up, without any questions as to what the 990 would show.  The first 990 will not have to be filed until possibly as late as September of 2025.  That will mean your money, if you ever donate will not be available for NIL purposes until almost all of the recruiting for freshmen and transfers for the fall of 2026 is done.  For someone who wanted to set up a collective, your wallet appears to be very very tight.

People are either part of the solution or part of the problem.  They are either working for the goal or against it. I will let others figure out what side you are on.

I have known two of the five board members for years.  They are in it because they bleed blue and white and not for any glory or money.  They and I want UB Athletics to succeed and we have all stepped up to the plate.

You have to trust people sometimes.  So step up and donate or stop complaining that there is no NIL money or money for the programs to spend on needs to make UB more attractive to freshmen and transfers.

When you tell me how the money is distributed to the athletes.

Call me "old school", but I'm already donating money to the Blue and White club (and purchasing season tickets). Why should I be donating money to the players as well?

Sorry, but all NIL and the new transfer rules do is causes players to follow the money and create no "brand loyalty".

If I could "donate" money to player and in return get a guarantee they will stay 4 years, I'll do that in a heartbeat.

    I understand your position.

How the NIL money is spent depends on where it is donated to.   I believe it works as follows; if you make the tax deductible donation, it will go to athletes who help out at non-profits.  If you donate to the corporate side, the money will go to an athlete who reaches some sort of endorsement arrangement with the corporate donor.

The question was not directed at you or to posters in general.  It was directed at TheCommish, who was complaining about a lack of a NIL collective and wanted to set one up working with other people.  But then as soon as an "official" UB NIL collective is set up he is complaining about it and looking for reasons to not donate to it.

  8. 2 hours ago, TheCommish said:

Does anyone think the people working for the collective are working for free? No one has said either way and it’s not on the faq.

All five of the directors are doing the work for the collective for free.  They are donating their time and effort.  There is no need to wait for the 990 to check for salaries.

Three of the five are former UB athletes.

So when can they expect your contribution?

We need to find a league like that with auto bids for basketball. 50/50 chance of Dancing, year-in, year-out!

The PAC2, will have no bids in any sport as a two team "conference".  They are not even a real conference in the NCAA next year.  A conference needs six members, which is why Johns Hopkins is in the Big 10 in lacrosse.

Good name, easy NIL possibilities with Mighty Taco

To add, he was offered a scholarship from Vermont when he was coming out of highschool, likely from current UB assistant coach tibbs

I am pretty sure that as a Canadian he cannot get NIL money.  All foreign students, except possibly Canadians, cannot get NIL money because it is work.  They are only allowed in the country as students.

  11. A challenge has been announced on the UB Giving Day Athletics page.  You make your donation go further.  Be one of the first 75 people to make a donation to athletics and your donations will be increased by $200.00.

  13. I am not sure that I would want to follow Calipari.  Leaves UMass followed by NCAA violations.  Leaves Memphis Followed by NCAA violations.  Leaves Kentucky...

I think the only head coaching job he had that he left that was not sanctioned by the NCAA was the Nets.

  14. Are people really upset that a basketball player who only had scholarship offers from Albany and Fairfield and decided to walk on at Arkansas State and was not recruited by UB?

Is that the level of recruit that people want?

  15. Apparently, setting up a NIL group as a 501(c)(3) to allow donations to it to not be tax deductible is now the IRS' position and that the earlier approvals were in error.

    https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2024/irs-letter-nil-collectives-tax-exempt-status-1234774152/

Here is a recent letter from the IRS denying 501(c)(3) status to a group.
