Maybe it is time to think out of the box UB should look into a Woman's basketball coach that is young ambitious and self assured. It would get us into the national media could increase our ability to attract NIL.  If she wins she is on every ESPN show and moves up in no time.  Plus Woman only get paid 86 cents to a mans dollar

This ides was floated to do exactly the with FLJ, last year so we would not lose her. There might be to much risk for the upside. Right coach. The AD is a genius by completely changing the coaching landscape of a completely entrenched boys club. Or the AD is a complete moron worst decision made by a college AD ever.

This all seems weird. I can't imagine Cohen genuinely plans to be here for more than 3-5 years...

Were assuming that it's length being to short of a contract.

For all we know he got a seven year contract with a massive buyout. He could of wanted a shorter contract with a smaller buyout. Makes things easier for the jump

St Bonaventure Bonnies have NIL worry about UB athletics there embarrassing themselves with the pay being turned down by anyone any good coaching candidate. UB can’t sell player jerseys but tiny St Bonaventure can. Canisius is tomorrow’s St Bonaventure Bonnies. UB Bulls basketball is closer to Buffalo State basketball pay wise and NIL wise. They don’t have any too heavy of a lift for UB? Exactly in my opinion. UB Horns Up! Go Bulls! Let’s Go Buffalo

It is very very well documented the Canisius is in deep finical trouble.

Buff States entire athletic budget is 1/6th of UBs. Our Men's basketball team would be 50% of Buff States budget on all sports. They pay their coaches less then 100k a year.

Your statement is borderline insulting to UB.

A little while back I left these boards because the discourse had become so toxic with regards to the basketball program. It was extremely frustrating to see the team not supported because of negative feelings towards the coach. Personally I wasn’t sure whether Whitesell was the right guy or not but I was willing to give him the time to try. In retrospect many on this board were correct, but I don’t regret not jumping on the hate wagon. Flash forward to now, and here is my version of the timeline of events:

Oats leaves for Alabama, and UB receives a solid payout. Alnutt elects to retain and hire Whitesell after utilizing a search firm to find a coach. Whitesell came relatively cheap, and UB still had the Oats payout to use when needed. This was fine with me, as Whitesell promised and delivered on keeping the team together. We had Graves, Williams, Jordan, and Segu to keep it rolling.

Whitesell generally underperformed over the next several seasons, but IMO the players he was bringing in and the direction the “core” of the team was moving warranted a wait and see approach. Instead, Alnutt inexplicably gave him an extension and this was the first big flaw in the process. Nothing was done to deserve an extension, and having a large buyout attached to it was absurd. Did he think Jim was going to jump ship for a bigger program despite not winning at UB?

After the 4th season of Whitesell’s tenure and another disappointing result, mixed with a revolving door of players, no direction, and no indication that things would change, he was let go. It was time. It may have gone a year too long and it ended up not working, but I didn’t fault the idea of it all. Afterall they still had the Oats buyout money to throw at a new coach. Except the extension. Not only did UB have to pay for Whitesell’s buyout, but they did it a few weeks early to the sound of an extra 100k. What was Alnutt thinking? Did he miscalculate? Did he get to a point where he realized he was in a sunk cost fallacy? We might never know.

Now we’re at the point where the Oats money is likely gone, theres been no NIL cultivation, coaches are saying no left and right (despite the fact that search firms are supposed to weed those candidates out to avoid this exact embarrassment), donors are going to be turned off, and half the team is already in the transfer portal without anyone to steer the ship. IMO this is catastrophic for Alnutt, and unless he can pull a rabbit out of his hat I don’t see how it’s anything other than a giant step back for the program.

Unless there are massive factors that we don't know this is the door for ADMA.

Amen. Maybe the 12 large pizza or weekend rental of a BMW or impossible full court golf putt prizes were canaries in our coal mine.

Weekend BMW rental is laughable. We should be giving one away.

12 large pizzas is a nice student give away.

NIL should be the we need that 4 star can we get the local dealership to lease him a M3 for free?

Do you think we can get Segu here to run NIL?

I imagine our MAC rivals who loathed our reign and thought we were temporary are just pigs in shit at the moment. Probably lurking here. Sucks.

No I'm with ya. But UB makes the Pegula operations look like the Yankees or Manchester City.

It seems like such low hanging NIL. Put the kids in some cars. Give them some gas cards. Have them post it to social a few times. Call up the off campus apartments, tell them to give them housing for free. Hell the Jet Blue to JFK to BUF is another easy one. It also opens up NYC recruiting. Sign here you get unlimited flights home...

NIL doesn't need to be all cash.

Does his offer have to match Becky burke? 250k?

I feel like that could be a thing in this search.

Missing out on your top three choices is a mess right now. Whitesell was a mess of a hire for many reasons and now they can't get anyone to take this job.

I think your onto something with matching Burke. Politics the way they are powers that be are dictating that "Women get paid the same a Men". Therefore our ceiling on the mens coach is what Burke makes.

We could just give Burke a raise as well but while we enough money to hire a legit D1 mens coach. We don't have the money to pay the women's coach the same. This lowers our ceiling to around 375k for each coach.  That not enough to get a big name, not even close.

I'm going to add one more. There is something massive about to come out about the program.  Either sanctions, violations, etc. Maybe a move to a lower conference.

    adding a fourth

ADMA is not the AD. Plans are to do the press release after a new basketball coach is hired. However no basketball coach wants to play for a unknown guy that might put them on a very short leash.

Sanctions and violations would be one thing, but a move to a lower conference would make no sense to me unless there's serious funding issues (and if that's the case - why spend an extra $100k on the Whitesell buyout?).  They've poured money into the football program and seem to have built stability there over the past few years.  There's no step-down for FBS football other than arguably C-USA, which would make zero sense given C-USA's leadership is a tire fire.  And nowhere in FCS really fits geographically; the closest is probably the CAA, but UB is far closer to most MAC schools than CAA schools.

    SUNY nuked Athletics before....

UB president very publicly quit because of SUNY politics.

Can we maybe entertain the idea that there is something about Mark Alnutt that is turning prospective coaches off from coming here?

I cannot express how disappointing this is.  Our momentum is gone!  We don't pay enough and we cannot attract the coaches we want to the program.  This is a really sad day for our program.  As a fan I am so sad about the status of this program.   We give Whitesell an extension, then pay a fee to get him out of Town and then we cannot hire the candidates we covet.  This program is clearly not at the level we as fans had hoped it had become.  I am honestly crushed with this news.  I would have loved to have either Cohen or McCollem.

In order to attract someone to coach here, there clearly needs to be a connection to our program or they need to be so far removed from coaching that they see it as an opportunity they cannot pass up.

At this point I would make the following calls to offer a potential coaching position and gauge their interest:

    CJ Massinburg

    Wes Clark

    Turner Battle

These type of options would likely consider this an opportunity and would likely stay longer if they were to be hired here because of their history here.

if none of them are interested.  I would start with former NBA players looking to get into coaching:

    Brian Scalabrine

    Derek Fisher

These type of options would instantly boost recruiting.

This is such a disappointing day for our beloved program.  I hope Admin can find a suitable option.  At this point turn  over every stone and look into every option possible.  This hire is critical!

Doesn't CJ and Clark have a somewhat successful overseas career? Plus TBT.

Although it could be a massive recruiting boost to have a D1 coach play in it.

Battle is no longer coaching. He is AD somewhere.

Quickly is not the right word.

It would appear that the target guys for the AD (the ones he had on his short list) didn’t work out for some reason (perhaps the same reasons as last time) and we are now looking at those who are more eager to leave their current situation (rather than wait for the “right fit”).

You would have to be an expert contortionist (and we have a few on this board) to look at what happened last time and what is perceived to be happening now, and conclude anything other than “very disappointing” at the moment.  The likelihood of an attractive, inspired hire at this point is pretty low.

    Complete guesses

    1. Bring Reggie back

    2. Sean Smiley - DII coach at Ferdonia.

    3.  Sweet Home High Schools coach.

    4. Quarles

    5. Bohiem is unemployed.

    6. Tell Lebron he can coach the team and his kid can play here.

    7. Patrick Ewing
