This is a cool story, appreciate you sharing it. I want to be clear that, as Mr. Negative, I still think Whitesell is a super like-able guy that should be credited with being a glue element to that roster. I just think those qualities make him a perfect assistant coach.

They "put up the money" for an Oats extension. I'm sure there were donors ear-marking funds for that but I'd assume the money they saved on the JW promotion was just re-appropriated away from Men's Hoops.

Could this be true regardless of this season's outcome?

Nobody forgets/forgot about these losses. It's not as simple as W/L (on either side of the coin)... There has been a complete change in program culture under Whitesell. I (obviously my opinion) don't think he instills a winning attitude in his players. There is a level of apathy for long stretches in games and even after losses players turn to social media highlights. Under Oats losses happened but players seemed to want nothing more than to go out and prove they were better. I don't see that now. There is a pattern of [seeming] unpreparedness, under-achieving what is "on paper" and sloppy play (TO as compared to assists, FTs, shot selection, defensive lapses) - these are what give me concern and causes me to complain. At the end of the day, certain Ws and Ls matter and from where I'm sitting Whitesell has not come through, but that is a result of the list above. As far as rankings are concerned, it is not that I think teams over ~100 in ranking should hang it up. It's that I think UB has the profile and recruiting potential that they should not be nearly satisfied with that level.

Same. So far he has lost to Miami in the first round (school first), gotten walloped by Ohio, and TBD this year. Forgive me for being wary of this goal as we have seen some of the same short-comings already this season. I hope, as much as anyone, that we win this year. I just don't know if this staff gets it done...

There’s probably a scenario where losing tonight isn’t horrible. Being down ~10 almost the entire game, having almost no assists, getting out-rebounded by 10, and shooing abysmally while not defending a wide open 3 to lose isn’t that scenario…
