One area Whitesell can work on is his use of timeouts. When he, or the opposing coach, call a timeout, Whitesell uses a good 30 seconds in consultation with his assistants while his players stand around. By the time he figures out what he wants to say, the timeout is over and the team has hardly had a chance to understand the tactics. Meanwhile the other team has used the full time out for the coach to speak to the players.

SI is calling this game a hidden gem: MBB: Buffalo at Michigan The Big Ten favorites on the hardwood open their season in Ann Arbor against a pesky Buffalo team. The Wolverines have national-title upside this year thanks to the return of star center Hunter Dickinson, and it’s hard not to trust Juwan Howard to figure things out with a talented group around him. Still, this game isn’t a cupcake. Buffalo is a top-100 team in SI’s 1–358 rankings and returns a lot of experienced talent, including star wing Jeenathan Williams. Don’t be surprised if the Bulls hang around for a while.

UB and Canisius should not need to bus students downtown. They both have the subway from their campus downtown. They could partner with the NFTA and deck one subway car in UB colors and the other in Canisius colors and do a PR stunt showing the trains heading to the arena.

Anyone know how to purchase tickets? Keybank Center doesn’t even show the event on their schedule.

Sounds like a great home and home for us

College students are not kids. They are adults. They are men and women. Not boys and girls.

We don’t have the donors to support a massive endowment like Bona. UB alum just don’t give, not the in numbers one would expect relative to our size.

The problem is that he will be neither an A coach or an F coach. He’ll be a C coach and for many fans that’s fine. That’s why we held on to Spoon because folks are fine with a C team and a C coach. They think of all the SUNY’s as the same. There’s another set of us who think of UB as the flagship and deserving of an A coach and an A team. We can allow for a B level of play once in a while but will not stand for C. We shouldn’t wait until we become the C team. Let’s read the tea leaves and move on.

So Witherspoon got the Bulls to a mid-tier in a mid-major. Then we held on to him too long, maybe out of loyalty. The next two coaches were able to bring the team up to top tier of mid major. Being back at mid tier mid major with a coach who we all doubt could do better than that doesn’t feel good and doesn’t seem right for the flagship SUNY.

I guess what’s important is they have fun and enjoy being in a championship game. I don’t think they’re worried about how well they’re playing or winning. As long as they’re enjoying each other’s company.

Interesting, between 5 and 6 there’s really no difference but if you want to make the sweet 16 you definitely don’t want a 7 seed. I think our game tonight will be the difference between a 7 or a 6 (or even a 5). If somehow we could pull off a 4, by those stats that’s a real jump.
