  1. In the span of 13 games the Bulls have beaten 3 teams that previously have won the NCAA men’s basketball tournament: Arizona, San Francisco, and Syracuse. Unbelievable. Can they make it 4 on Friday? I think they’re due for a game where they click on all cylinders -ooops not a good way to put it: some of those threes in the first half didn’t hit anything, and some only hit the backboard. Man if they put it all together on Friday, look out!
  2. Wow! What a great team effort. Offensive boards, defensive intensity in second half, and some threes (I thought that McRae’s was great) that finally started falling. The thing is...we still haven’t seen what this team is capable of. They are winning, but they at some point will be blowing teams away. Hopefully Friday in Milwaukee.
  3. In 2014. Hurley’s first year at UB and Javon McCrae’s last. OT loss to ultimate MAAC champ which lost to Louisville in first round at NCAAs. St John’s seems to be legitimate again, but other than them I can’t think of any teams in the NYC area that would be worth playing.
  4. Is this about money? Is a coach ranked (valued) according to salary? I’ll take Oats over just about anyone, except for Beilein.
  5. Remember that game 7 years ago when Jimmer Fredette and BYU came to Alumni Arena? The place was packed and absolutely rocking! UB gave them a run for their money before losing, but that team had a ton of BYU fans in the stands. I was flabbergasted by the number of out of state license plates that I saw in the parking lot that night. They beat Gonzaga in the NCAAs. UB should pack their arena EVERY game this year. If they don’t, shame on WNY and shame on UB.
  6. I guess it’s a matter of semantics. Being accepted into a so called ‘premed’ program is no guarantee of acceptance at a US medical school. Far from it. Any high school senior, who’s interested in pursuing a career as a physician would be better served by determining what percent of a college’s graduates gain admittance to medical school rather than whether or not the college has a ‘premed’ program. Again, the medical schools are only looking at prerequisite courses and MCATs and the recommendation letters, etc. Premed programs? They mean nothing.
  7. The only schools in WNY who have medical schools are UB and the U of R. Anytime a school mentions a “pre-Med” program, it’s a hoot. There is no “pre-Med” program - anywhere. Medical schools in the US all have their own prerequisites with respect to courses of study. Generally it includes a mix of courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and labs. Calculus is usually included as well as various other courses such as English (who would have thought). The prerequisites vary from med school to med school. When a journalist writes about anyone who was majoring in “pre-Med” only to abandon that study to pursue a position in pro sports, Hollywood, social work...you name it, he is simply attempting to suggest that their subject is cerebral. Not to disparage St Bona, but it has no med program. Nor do Colgate, Williams, or any college. One last thing. When anyone graduates from a medical school, he is a doctor. The road to practicing medicine, however, has merely begun. There are more hoops to jump before a doctor can practice medicine. Internship, Residency, Fellowship...it’s a long arduous road. When Obama calls the doctors greedy, I want to stick a finger down my throat.
  8. Agreed. Let SIU bring their best shot. It’s scary, but I don’t think we’ve even remotely seen what the Bulls are capable of yet.
  9. If anyone plans on actually sitting in a GA spot, I’d advise him to get there early. Otherwise, you’ll be standing for the whole game.
  10. In Philadelphia, Villanova, St Joseph’s, Penn, Lasalle, and Temple all play each other every year. Drexel might play some of the other 5 but they aren’t considered to be in the group - Drexel is not considered a rival. You always want to protect your ‘turf’. I’d say Olean, even though it’s 90 miles away, is part of the ‘Buffalo’ turf. In that sense, Buffalo, Canisius, Niagara, and St Bonaventure are rivals. It seems like a rivalry game to me...but I’m from Buffalo. Maybe if you’re a Bulls fan from Syracuse you consider them a rival - but UB rarely plays Syracuse. Rivalries are great for sport. You hate losing to a rival. It eats at you more than losing to, say, the San Francisco team would have. I can’t wait to beat the Bonnies!
  11. Great story about another great coach! Come on Bulls...get it done today!
  12. UB is 1 - 7 against St Bona in the past 10 years.
  13. Actually, my first visit to the old aud was in 1960. The 1960-1961 season was the year that the Stith Brothers, Whitey Martin (Timon), and Orrin Jirelle, and Fred Crawford were a force.
  14. I remember going to my first college double-header in 1961 at the old aud. Bonaventure was always the first game - unless they were playing the Griffs. They used to be called the “Brown Indians” (politically incorrect now) and were ranked 2nd nationally at one point. The Little Three games were SRO affairs, except Niagara was not a participant for a number of years because of a financial dispute with Canisius on the revenue split (I believe). In 1969-1970 they had Bob Lanier from Bennett High in Buffalo, and that team probably would have won it all were it not for a late game freak injury to Lanier in the Easter Regional final blowout win against Villanova. The Bonnies took Kentucky to 2 or 3 overtimes before losing in a first round NCAA March Madness game in 2000. The school has a lot of history involving its mens basketball team. Schmidt must be doing something right - he’s in his 12th year there and pulls in almost $1 mill a year. This game will be a battle.
  15. I’m most worried about three things: 1. UB’s team three point shooting 2. UB’s rebounding and 3. UB Turnovers. Last year at Alumni Arena the Bulls were poor in all three categories. If memory serves, Bona’s Adams was just returning from the injured list. He and Mobley are gone, but the Bonnie’s currently have three guys who are shooting well from deep: Kaputo, Poyser, and Lofton. They’ve got some big bodies down low. The Reilly Center is one of the toughest places to play in the country. The Bulls guards will be fine, but it will take solid play from Perkins, Harris, and McRae in order to finally win one in Olean.
  16. The Bulls haven’t even really put a whole game together yet - all their guns. When they start doing that, look out.
  17. Whoops...sentiments re Syracuse still hold. But Bona will be a tough one regardless. Has UB ever won there? They’ll have to bring their A game.
  18. What scares me about Syracuse is their zone and our poor 3 point shooting of late. Unless we can improve our 3 point shooting, this game will be almost impossible to win at their house.
  19. After missing about 5 home games in the last 7 years, I hate that I haven’t been to a single game yet. Worse -I’m going to miss the Southern Illinois game too - won’t even be able watch it on TV. Hopefully once MAC season starts I won’t miss any.
  20. The Championship Trophy looks stunning! I’ll bet it’s Waterford Crystal. Great to get another W! McCrae’s 3s were crucial - and he is shooting the ball so much better this year. Go Bulls!!
  21. If the Bulls are still a top 25 team in March, I wonder if that will translate to a 5 or 6 seed? Probably not, unfortunately.
  22. Good to get a victory, but still haven’t seen the best this team has to offer. Not by a long shot. Hope they can put it all together against the Cuse and Marquette.
  23. Bertram hasn’t shown any of the offensive capability that Stainbrook showed. After he transferred to Xavier he was one of their solid contributors. Even at W Michigan his sophomore year he was good for about 10 points per game - although he missed those foul shots in his last trip to Alumni Arena.
