  1. I would think yes. However is sounds like it can be easily abused for things like fraud and money laundering
  2. I mentioned this as well. There is nothing about any of us from stuffing a envelope full of cash and giving to to a player, for pretty much any reason.
  3. The great thing about NIL is you can hand an athlete an envelope full of cash and its legal. You don't need to give money to a collective I assume most collectives are volunteer the boards are a group of moderately wealthy people. Beside do we want to take money out of athletes pockets to pay someone money to run an NIL? How would we all feel if the NIL raised 200k and gave 150k to the people running it? The board of the collective makes the choices. After all it is its own entity outside the scope of the school. With while strong ties. They are lose and must be kept at arms reach. A school can't have any direct control over a NIL. They can use influence and some politics to get their vision across. But we are not big enough nor are their multiple collectives to negotiate with. The Nickel City Collective will be able to put the money to whomever they see fit while I assume with recommendations from UB athletics. Although they can chose not to listen at all without any real repercussions.
  4. The championship game was in Arizona. Does he get a pass because he is close to his brother?
  5. Winning a championship in Alabama is significant for both the school and Oats. Not winning a championship in Kentucky would be significant for both the school and Oats if he went there. Alabama can compete and probably offer more on every level except history. It's also an 18 million buyout, plus a significant jump in salary to make Oats think about moving. Base on SI, his new contract is top 5 at 5 million a year. He has a huge contract with a huge buyout. Saban is gone. He is now the face of 'Bama sports.
  6. And we have Jay Wright and his connection to HCGH and UB. Lot of connections for this game
  7. 100% agree. There was no way we would of ever of beaten the offer from Alabama or any other. Those schools can always say more. UB can't, there is a point were the money just isn't there. We also don't know what really happened behind closed doors with Oats. He did sign a buyout within hours of accepting another job. Maybe is was part of the negotiation on his part and 'bama said the highest we will go on a buyout is X?
  8. It might be become a double edge sword for the now paid student athletes. Workers comp maxes out at around $1200 wk or 2/3 of pay. Imagine a player getting injured and the scholarship went from 100% to 66%. It could end up saving schools money and also making them more willing to bench a player for being injured and paying them less.
  9. I don't the think having Hodgson would of fixed anything. Oats is that good. UB is going to be a segment on his 30 for 30 on day
  10. Wait till he finds out it's in Ohio, which is in Canada 🙃
  11. It's 10000000000000% a SUNY thing. SUNY already made a choice to kill athletics in the 1970s. Their track record is not good.
  12. On the bright side we can't get worse then what we were this year. Heres to looking up!
  13. UB is a very good university with what can be a solid mid-major program. We just need to find the self aware student atheletes who are good enough at basketball to play D1 at a high level. But know that this is it after 4 years so better get the best education they can.
  14. Please some give us some more details.
  15. I mean Akron had the rubber bowl..... Kent state I'm sure they have something I can make fun of in their past.
  16. My downplaying wasn't so much as we don't need it. But more of we don't need a lot of money to compete. We don't need millions to compete with the top athletes because we aren't going to get them anyways. I feel the public looks at the top deals and thinks all deals are somewhere in that realm. When the reality is that at the top the money may be millions, but on average NIL deals are well well under 10k. That's if there is any NIL deal. A UB collective could probably have a fund well under $1 million and still be highly competitive nationally. Recruiting goes hand in hand with this too. UB needs to be self aware that we are still going after mid major talent, with the off chance of getting an under the radar player. Maybe pick off a P5 bench player who will want to get more playing time and maybe a little more money, or even a little less money.
  17. you would think there would be some level of coordination with arguably one the most accomplished Atheltes to come out of UB for this?
  18. SUNY rules about athletic scholarships pre 1986 ruined decades of history UB could of had. We have been playing catch up and at times there still seems to be some deeply embedded mindset that students are their for an education the school doesn't need athletics. Previous Presidents and ADs who want to change this perception were basically ran out the door or offered little support to see their visions through (Simpson and UB2020, White and to some degree Manuel and Green). The culture of leadership needs to change for anything to be effective. Schools have had years to work on it. If Albany and Stony Brook can get things set up what is taking UB so long? UB actively working on setting up a collective isn't a goal, plan or excuse anymore. Its a failure in leadership and process to not have it already done and running for almost 2 years now.
  19. At first I was going to write how UB is a SUNY school and those politics are and have been ruinous for UB in the past. See UB2020 and the resignation letter from Simpson for past examples. However both Albany and Stony Brook have NIL collectives.... There has to be something behind closed doors going on. I don't understand how UB can be much behind on this new NIL landscape.
  20. Totally forgot the other coaches name but we got under his skin a got him T'd up for yelling at us.
  21. The Pitt game close to (checks math) 20 years ago? WTF I'm old. The game where Reggies was hitting the refs table buzzer to get BG back out of the locker rooms because the ran away with time still in the game.
  22. It seems your just hell bent on making UB into a P5 school with pulling money out of every where because there is bound to be waste so the money is there.
