UB's Best Lineup

As some of our best players come off the bench and constantly cycle on and off the bench, I got curious what is our best lineup. Here are my first three articles on it. I hope to keep adding updates as the year goes on...both going back at the games I missed (Marquette through NIU) and keeping up with games as they happen going forward.

This is great stuff.  Truly is.  I think what has become evident are 3 things

1) You have to surround the freshman with as much upperclassmen as possible.  This will allow them to play within the flow of the game and also hide their defensive inabilities.

2) Any lineup combo that has Perkins-Massinburg-Harris on the floor is our best.  They are the money players.  Guys like McRae, Jordan, Graves and Caruthers you can rotate around the big 3 depending on the situation and hot hand.

3) Our depth is insane.  When a guy like Graves is averaging 10 a game and isn't depended on in crunch time is crazy.  And when you get the two frosh to step up like they did against Kent, it speaks loudly to how deep Oats can comfortably go in his rotation and lineup combos.

Great stuff!

Sometimes less is more as UB's best lineup ran out of gas against Marquette.

That Marquette game still irks me. Only because they were so lights out from 3 that I think they can’t duplicate that to that percentage again.  Perhaps the constant barrage of 3s mentally drained us making us look like we were dragging, but Howard was making some 3s with hands in his face. You just tip your cap and hope to see em again.

I think we just got tired. Theo John did so much work stopping us at the rim, then you play 30 seconds of defense just to see Howard sink a redic 3, eventually our shooters got heavy arms and our shots didn't fall.

Outside of this game McRae, Segu & Williams avg 16 - 10 and 9 minutes. In this game, 5 - 4 - 4. A difference of 22 game minutes. Not exactly our game style...but I think a good time for Oats to see what happens when we play 6 guys instead of 9.

Yeah, good stuff Conrad. I enjoy reading these, I think its more important than a lot of people think.

Caruthers and Graves were pretty bad against Kent and your splits prove that.

I felt that Caruthers shut Walker down quite well in the 2nd half of the Kent game, so I respectfully disagree with that assessment. Walker did put 2 moves on him in the 1st half that were pretty crazy however. It's no often that Dontay gets shaken like that. Walker is one impressive dude out there. I wonder who taught him that in high school???

I think Caruthers comes out pretty good on this, Kent thew up 6 more shots than UB over 31 minutes with Caruthers on court, but Caruthers was +2 in points, so pretty decent for the kind of game that was, but UB would probably prefer to out shoot the opponent as we force turnovers and avoid turnovers and win the rebounding battle...

Graves...not so good

Interesting to see how good Harris has been. Even better in conference.

Just comes at a cost of 15% from three.

AT OHIO #1

Plus/Minus: game (conference, season)

T1) Massinburg: +11 (+197, +333)
T1) McRae: +11 (+139, +248)
3) Graves: +3 (+150, +273)
4) Jordan: +2 (+187, +376)
5) Segu: 0 (-32, -18)
6) Wiliams: -1 (+10, +26)
T7) Perkins: -3 (+176, +273)
T7) Caruthers: -3 (+141, +208)
9) Harris: -5 (+220, +379)

*One cell was off in yesterday's calculation of conference plus/minus, so the numbers are corrected here. Harris is still #1 in conference and overall, with Massinburg at #2 in conference. Jordan moves within 3 of Harris for the season lead.

Overall UB is +425 on the season and +238 in conference games.

Best line: "Starting lineup" Jordan - Graves - Massinburg - McRae - Harris

This line started the game by going plus 6 plus/minus but after their first 4:18 shift, the line only saw the court one more time for 18 seconds, where they went 0 plus/minus and +1 corsi. In this case, Jordan's injury was probably the main reason our top line saw limited minutes.

Surprising line: "Long, Strong and Wrong" Graves - Massinburg - McRae - Perkins - Segu

Coming into the game this line was -13 plus/minus and -2 corsi on the season, but at Ohio, the line was +4 plus/minus and +2 corsi over 2:02 on court.

Worst line: Massinburg - Harris - Perkins - Segu - Williams

-3 plus minus and -3 corsi over 3:46 on court.

Corsi: game

1) Graves: +4
2) Jordan: +3
3) McRae: +2
4) Wiliams: -1
T5) Harris: -3
T5) Massinburg: -3
T7) Segu: -5
T7) Perkins: -5
9) Caruthers: -7

Overall UB was -4 in Corsi for the game.

Game MVP: CJ Massinburg

McRae was +11 / +2 but only played 14 minutes. Harris had his 2nd best game in conference play, but his plus/minus and corsi was uncharacteristically way down.

CJ played 34:11 and while he was on the court UB outscored Ohio by 11, while putting up 3 fewer shots.

During the five times CJ was not on the court, a total of 5:49, Ohio outscored UB by 8 points.

Good stuff.

I can't believe how bad Segu/Caruthers were yesterday. When Jordan went out, that was a totally different game.
