2023 Transfers

  1. Hardnett - Arkansas State
  2. Blocker - IUPUI (D2)
  3. Jack - Dayton
  4. Ceaser - Old Dominion
  5. Mading - Norfolk State
  6. Powell - UTEP
  7. Jones - Iowa State

Only Powell seems to found a similar role and is playing the minutes he had a Buffalo.

Jones is what is more common than not, try to move up and find yourself on the bench as a backup.  There was a reason he was not recruited originally to Power 6 schools.  The P6 coaches really don't miss often on players in regards to what level their skill set is aligned with.  Jones is a good player in the MAC, and a average (backup) at a higher level.  Watching him last year, he was not fleet of foot, or a great defensive player. Good height and a good shooter.  That translates into role player in Power 6.  I think the P6 coaches are brillant, as you can recruit a experienced D1 player (ex starter) as a backup player and it improves your team (Games and Practice) and don't need have a lot of freshman coming off the bench.

BTW, the group aboves 3 pt % are aweful at their new schools.  Jones is shooting 24% from 3 and 33% overall and 58% FT.

MAC is really not a high level basketball conference (see below 2022 - 2023 USATODAY rankings), so what Nate did in recruiting continued be be more amazing as time unfolds.

Hardnett has only played in 1 game for Ark State and scored 3 pts, not sure if he’s battling injuries or just can’t crack the rotation?  He would have been a nice piece to retain this year but can’t really blame him for leaving.

CuJo seems to be getting a decent amount of playing time averaging 7.8 ppg despite the low 3P and FT %’s.  But is it worth going from being a star player in the MAC to 6th man on a middle of the pack Big 12 team?  Doubt it improved his NBA draft prospects but he’ll certainly have a better chance to play in an NCAA tournament.

As for Jack, in limited playing time he’s made 15 of 16 shots from the field.  Bulls sure could use that kind of production and size from their front court.

Hardnett is injured.

Wish we had similar info on Adams.  Does SUNY have privacy restrictions or something?

  • Curtis Jones wanted to see what he was capable at a higher level. To be a 6th man on a good Big XII program is a solid opportunity.
  • Blocker is getting more playing time at a Horizon League school. I'm sure he's okay with the decision he made.
  • Mading is finally getting a shot to see the court on a winning Norfolk State squad
  • Jack is a sophomore playing on a quality A10 program. It's not a surprise that his stats are limited right now
  • Powell is basically the same guy at UTEP as he was here but putting up a few less shots
  • Caesar really didn't improve his situation drastically but he might've wanted a new start
  • Hardnett has been injured and hasn't contributed at Arkansas State.

The unmitigated transfers will be the end of college athletics and especially any mid major

Definitely needs to be more common sense rulings involving multiple transfers but open game for all is not going to be a good thing overall (education wise and athletically)

Only good thing about it will be the students/players getting the money they deserve

What it means is recruiting for mid majors has changed My thinking is you recruit up tell these kids they can start as a freshman.  If there are as good as they think they can transfer and get the big bucks, then. The mid major coach who has the right message can recruit higher rated talent and will succeed.  It will be like the one and done high majors just with a different carrot for these kids.  We are not going to see 4-year kids playing for mid majors.

Not if you can’t offer them $$ right away

Agree, they will chase the $$ first over playing time.

The majority of the FBS schools need to start their own division and stop pretending they are in the same League as the Top 30 - 40 teams who self fund their athletic department.

You’re underselling Curtis Jones who is the 6th man on the #20 rated KenPom team. ISU’s starting PG is going to be in all-American consideration

CuJo scored 11 tonight vs Oklahoma.  I’d say his transfer has been a success as the 4th leading scorer at 10.3 ppg along with 1.7 spg coming off the bench for the 8th ranked team in the land.  Must be having a lot of fun out there.  Sure missed him in Buffalo this year.

Definitely missed him. If he stayed I’d dare say we could’ve been around .500

Not sure about that. We would surely be better, but we are more than 1 player away.

Maybe, but think of all the times the game was somewhat in grasp late in the game and we slipped. Don’t think CuJo would’ve let us go 10 minutes without scoring, and his level head could slow the game down and limit turnovers compared to Fulcher. We all keep saying we wish we had another guard, could’ve solved a lot of problems.

Fair point, however, I think Adam's regression/stagnation or whatever you want to call it is one of our major issues. If he was an actual solid veteran presence that he and Sy could be a 1-2 punch and allow the remaining guys to perform their roles, that would have helped a ton. That didn't happen and won't happen. These are the missing pieces we really need to figure out. Somehow we need to find 2 veteran scorers that can work together within whatever system the GH3 staff is envisioning. These guys must also be able to play D. Not an easy ask for sure.

Agreed. But I bet Sy, Adams, and CuJo could’ve been very solid together in picking up the game when another struggles

Couldn’t agree more. He’s regressed significantly and just cannot be relied on anymore. It’s just too difficult to stay competitive in current environment without bringing in experienced players from transfer portal who can be relied on for scoring. Halcovage failed at bringing any transfers in who would have an impact in year 1, hopefully that changes for year 2.

Although not having a lead guard like Jones forced Adams to play out of position as a point forward (essentially a lead guard) and likely threw his game into the uneven state we see. Having an actual lead guard, while not worth ten wins, would have slotted everyone including Adams into a more appropriate position, role, and rank in the pecking order.

Honestly shocked the staff couldn’t find a single player to transfer down with all their connections.

Agreed. They did get Graham, but he wasn't supposed to play this year and looks like he forgot how to play basketball anyways.

There's a lot of pressure on the staff to find a couple readymade MAC starters this off-season via their high-major connections.
