Good mid majors pluck assistants from current staffs. UB should have hired Kotelnicki or Chris Simpson as Leipold’s replacement instead of trying to reset. Ended up losing tons of good players to the portal.

Are you kidding? Everyone shit on Kotelnicki when he was here! People would have flipped out.

Also, a lot of our best players losses went to Kansas that would not have changed. Gall at Baylor is a first team all Big 12 guy so he would have been gone too. The loss of the OL guys was our biggest issue. They were so good and we had a nice pipeline, then we were required to rebuild and play players before they were ready.

Nate Oats leaves for Bama.

Alnutt: Makes uninspiring hire for continuity and roster retention

Lance Leipold leaves for Kansas

"Why didn't you make another uninspiring hire for continuity and roster retention?"

In the era of transfer portal, you can't make the roster retention hire because you can essentially rebuild an entire team in a year or two without anybody losing eligibility. We'll see how it works with WBB

Coach Leipold signed a new contract this week.  Some Details courtesy footballscoop.com:

Quote

The deal, agreed upon last week, will pay the 58-year-old $5 million in 2023, with $100,000 annual raises and a $750,000 bonus due within 30 days of signing. The deal will top out at $5.6 million in 2029, unless Kansas bumps it to get Leipold back within the top half of its conference. (Subsequent contract language states that salaries for the Texas and Oklahoma coaches will not be included in the calculation.)

Leipold agreed to a significant coach-end buyout in order to get that level of commitment from Kansas -- at least through the current cycle. He would owe $12.5 million upon leaving before April 30, 2023. The figure drops to $6 million on May 1 of next year, then $1 million a year thereafter. Kansas would owe Leipold 80 percent of the remaining contract if fired without cause.

Leipold will have $5 million a year to pay his on-field assistants and $2.5 million to pay his off-field staff, with $100,000 annual raises to each pool. His bonus structure ranges from $50,000 for reaching seven wins to $500,000 for reaching the national title game.

Now it has been a long time since Kansas went .500 in a regular season, but this is an extension to a coach who is 8-16 for two years.  To those who do not understand why UB gives coaching extensions, when they do not like what they see on the field, it is just standard operating procedure.

See it’s all perspective and where you are. One coach finishes .500 and is a hero that gets major stadium upgrades. The other HOPES to get to .500 and a bowl and is considered trash. If only our expectations were lower we would have a better perceived coach. I understand much different conferences and level of play, but KU is 8/10 and 3-6 conference record, yet they pay $5 million a year for that. Could be worse I guess, Oklahoma pays whatever they pay for the same conference record. Now they can go get spanked in the SEC.

Mostly it's to increase the buyout.

There’s a big difference between hiring an old a coach who’s been around for years and and up and coming 40 something year old guy. I actually think Simpson had the demeanor to be a good HC

6-6 Kansas leading 6-6 Arkansas early on in the Liberty Bowl on ESPN.  Can LL match Mo with a bowl win in his 2nd season at the helm with his new school?

Not going to happen. They started 5-0, got everyone excited, committed tons of money to new facilities, gave LL a big payday because they figured he would leave. Limped to a 1-6 finish, somehow beating OKSt. By game 6 there was enough film and they took Kansas seriously. They are now down 24-7 and have thrown 2 picks so far. If they make a big comeback I will be very surprised. Good for him getting the dumpster fire program to 6-6 and a bowl. Huge improvement for the program. We will see what next year looks like.

Kansas has made a game of it, clawing back from down 31-7 to now 38-23 with 2:43 to go and just recovered a fumble. Gonna be an exciting finish!

I figured LL had some recent success in Bowl games so i put a small online wager on Kansas +2.5.   I stopped watching at 38-23 late.  Saw the score on my phone in OT and flipped it back on.  Wow, what a crazy game.  Too bad they didn’t win but hey you got me the cover Lance!

LL has been floated as a Northwestern HC replacement. That would be an even bigger Dick move that when Kansas poached him.

Lance ain’t leaving for NW. They will do interim for a year. Lance’s deal with Kansas is so much in his favor he’d be dumb to leave but for only the most elite jobs. Expectations at Kansas are so low as well. Check out all the perks.
