West Virginia looks less and less like a quality win.

Recommended Posts

This is concerning.  Can’t help but think of St Mary’s being ranked and then getting snubbed.

West Virginia  just lost to Rhode Island a team currently 5th in the A10 according to Kenpom.  West Virginia has not beat a single top-100 team this year. Their best win is against St Joes.

I have a feeling no credit will be given for the WVU win by the end of the year.

We really need San Francisco to Beat Stanford.  Without is our wins don’t look to good.

Well a win vs Marquette could help us a lot

This. I'm not big on at-large scenarios. IF we get upset in Cleveland I'll care.

At large is the mark of a real program and is a real accomplishment.  The Bulls need to be in the at-large field.  It means they get a high enough seed to not have to have an upset.

We are playing for at-large bids.

Recruiting and scheduling turns a corner when you are an at-large program.  Teams don't want to play someone who is good but not good enough to get at-large bids.  If you get at-large bids they know that you're actually a good program that is respected by the committee.  Then we can actually get some good games.

So in this example it's better to lose in Cleveland and get an at-large bid?

Hopefully WVU steps up during conference play and beats Kansas in Morgantown.  They just need to jell.  Huggins is still breaking that team in and they will be better come March than they are now.  Its still a quality win (Quad 1I believe) and right now it doesn't look that way but by March hopefully it stands true.

Agree, Any win is a good win and can only enhance our rankings. The main thing is just continue to win and gain more confidence with each win. It is still a long season and anything can happen to teams from one week to the next. Go Bulls!!!!

No, we know who are at-large teams even if they get an auto-bid.

If you are seeded higher than the first-four at-large teams, then you were an at-large team.

The committee seeds the at-large teams first, then they fill in the auto-bids at the low seeds.  The committee releases the complete seeds rank (as well as those that just miss the cut.  The top-four to miss the cut get NIT #1 seeds.

This was the field last year:

1 Virginia ACC 31–2 Auto
2 Villanova Big East 30–4 Auto
3 Kansas Big 12 27–7 Auto
4 Xavier Big East 28–5 At-large
5 North Carolina ACC 25–10 At-large
6 Duke ACC 26–7 At-large
7 Purdue Big Ten 28–6 At-large
8 Cincinnati American 30–4 Auto
9 Michigan State Big Ten 29–4 At-large
10 Tennessee SEC 25–8 At-large
11 Michigan Big Ten 28–7 Auto
12 Texas Tech Big 12 24–9 At-large
13 Auburn SEC 25–7 At-large
14 Wichita State American 25–7 At-large
15 Gonzaga WCC 30–4 Auto
16 Arizona Pac-12 27–7 Auto

42 St. Bonaventure Atlantic 10 25–7 At-large
43 Arizona State Pac-12 20–11 At-large

If you look at the field you will see that Purdue and Michigan State are in and seeded higher than Michigan even though Michigan won the auto-bid.  That's because the at-large teams are determined before the conference tournaments are finished.

The committee gives out the at-large bids first.  The best teams get in without looking at the conference results.  The conference results determine the bottom slots and the bubble teams.  Those are all determined last.

WVU on road is still a great win. Its not as powerful as it would be if WVU wasn't middling right now.

However collectively beating SIU twice is nothing to scoff at. Beating San Fran still looks very good regardless if they beat Stanford.

If you're solely focused on at large odds, then yes, you need to be SYR and possibly even Marquette. If UB looses 3 games this year. 1 to Marquette and 2 in the MAC (1 in the final), will they get an at large? Incredibly tough to say. I would say 50-50.

But I also don't really care. Even with all this ranked excitement, Im still focused on winning the MAC again. When you're a fan of a MAC team for as long as most of us have been, you know thats the only real way to get in the NCAA.

Just win...forget the rest about who beats who and where.  Control what you can control -- the rest is wasteful.

Go Bulls!

That's my thought process as well. We won't know the quality of the WVU win until the end of the season around tournament time.

Regardless of how it turns out, it was a tremendous comeback that kick started the Bulls current run. Without it, UB wouldn't be ranked and definitely wouldn't be receiving all of the hype they're currently getting.

In the end, I think it'll turn out to be a very good win, but not the Top 25 quality road win we all originally thought.

15 loss Alabama as an at-large.  SMH.  Zero true road wins OOC and an 8 - 10 conference record.

The system is set up for the P5.  That's why we gotta get into one of those leagues...eventually.
