Is UMASS even a better job than Bonnies? That would be hilarious if he left for UMASS after some of the jobs he was rumored around the past couple of years.

I don’t think it is a better job but does money mean more and the fact he is losing his entire starting five with the unknown of who will be on the team next year weigh on what his decision will be. Just another team that could be on the downward trend like Canisius and Niagara from years past. Go Bulls!!!

If someone in your conference can double your salary, you go. Take the money and run. If that's what you should have been worth in that conference, don't give Bona the satisfaction of coming in with a matching offer. If they somehow "find the money", they could have done it long before now. Move on, no regrets.

Facing a rebuild either way.

How does UMASS have $1.8MM for a coach while we're paying $300k? Seriously, can somebody please explain this already? Where is our money? Is it because SUNY won't give us a dime? Is it because Tripathi is cheap as hell? Is our donor base pathetic? Someone please explain why a state school from Massachusetts can afford 6x the salary of a state school from NY. It's infuriating watching the MASSIVE discrepancy in spending amongst us and our peers.

A very good question.

It will be interesting if Schmidt can recruit and get players that he continued to get at Bona. I wonder if he can get quality players to go to UMASS.  After a few years if he does not succeed at UMASS maybe UB can offer him a job. Go Bulls!!

In 2020, the 28th highest paid Men's Basketball Coach was Dan Hurley at UConn - $2.8 million, which was the same as Sean Miller (formerly of Arizona)

Here is the article about McCall's firing. They most have really wanted Schmidt, 80% increase from previous coaches total compensation. I love the "other pay" category you see on most coaches now. Since a lot of colleges are public university, etc. the base pay likely has a cap, but lots of ways around that:

McCall's base pay for coaching the UMass basketball team is $250,000. According to state payroll records, he was paid $780,750 in “other pay” in 2021 for a total of $1,030,750. He was paid $600,750 in 2020 and $577,000 in 2019. McCall will stay through the Atlantic 10 Tournament, according to the university.

Basically all state school coaches have a similar base salary.

Calipari's base salary at Kentucky is $400,000 a year.  Coach_John_Calipari_Contract.pdf

The base salary is what state benefits are based off and keeps coaches on the men's and women's sides in compliance with Title IX.  The majority of the compensation is from additional sources like media and endorsements guaranteed by the school.  Kentucky gives Cal $8 Million a year for his "media" appearances for the team.

UMass and UB pay their coaches similar from the state employee standpoint.  But the UB basketball media contract is pretty worthless.  We are paid in "exposure" with our Friday night ESPN2 MACtion.
